Cheiron - Phantasma

Artist: Cheiron
P: 1996
Track 1 opens with a child's cry and a clanging bell. Some Robert Fox style background touches and synth swathes build momentum before a sequence starts up at the 3 minute mark. It's a well constructed sequence too, pitched low with plenty of weight, almost in Ron Boots mode. A wispy lead makes a fleeting appearance, then the sequence is stripped down at the 5 minute mark before regaining structure aided by a drum beat. The early promise and robust rhythmics have been replaced by a lightweight backing and fairly twee melodics. Synth stabs and denser pads attempt to put things right, and there are some clever interludes of sequential trickery, but it's hard to not feel disappointed because there was real potential in the opening minutes. Track 2 is a thoughtful piece which builds on a simple theme to produce a lush symphonic outing whose clever repetitive motifs produce an outing of infectious qualities. Track 3 is an uptempo outing with a Russian feel running through it. A well constructed melody brings to mind Waveform at times. Track 4 is not overly dissimilar with stirring anthemic themes built around a bustling rhythm and again that clanging bell. The remaining tracks keep up the robust nature. (GG)

Chihei Hatakeyama - The River

Artist: Chihei Hatakeyama
P: 2009
LTD 500
Chihei Hatakeyama is a Japanese artist living on the outskirts of Tokyo who produces some of the most beautifully refined and emotive ambient music around. With releases on Kranky, Room 40, Under the Spire, Magic Book Records, Spekk (as Opitope) and now Hibernate Records, he has quickly established a solid and unique footing in the genre. I have followed Chihei’s work since his first full-length release on Kranky in 2006, Minima Moralia, which remains one of my favorite albums to this day. This album is full of dense drones and texture with suggestive melodic phrases intervening at just the right moments.
The River is a step in a different direction, with a strong theme and trajectory from start to finish that becomes all the more apparent when listened to in appreciation of one of Chihei’s influences – the film Apocalypse Now directed by Francis Ford Coppola. “You know why you can never step into the same river twice? …’cause the river is always moving.” A curious quote from this film where the Nung river is the lifeblood for the local population as well as the occupying soldiers, but is also symbolic of the the progression and struggle of humanity against herself and nature.
In his words, Chihei’s productions can be described as “memory-evoking soundscapes” composed “with various recorded materials of acoustic instruments such as guitars, vibraphone, and piano…played by hand and processed time and time again via laptop.” The River opens with Jade Green River, a track that builds with swaying tones in the higher frequencies, but with relief provided by a reassuring, resolving drone in the lower frequencies. This sets the fluxuating mood for the album. The music ebbs and flows, interspersed with soft, warm moments like light drizzle, to darker, mysterious pieces like a temple in the past. This is an engaging piece of work that satisfies greatly when listened to on headphones, but also provides an introspective atmosphere when listened to at low volume over loud speakers. This is a real gem of a release – a hopeful sign of what we might expect in the future from Chihei and from Hibernate recordings.

Chris Snidow - From the Foundation of the World

Artist: Chris Snidow
P: 1995

This fourth recording by relative newcomer Snidow could well be called his breakthrough album. Some material previously reviewed showed great promise, and this time it’s delivered in spades! Foundation…is one of those rare albums that reaffirms the unique position of electronic music and our love/addiction to it.
Nothing this fresh and exciting has come down the pike since Mark Dwane’s Monuments of Mars.
The nine tracks are titled to reflect the Bible’s story of Creation and man’s journey through the world. While King James’ Bible references are named, the music is highly spiritual in a metaphysical senseand never trite or sappy. Here are some of the freshest, coolest synth compositions I've heard in a long while. And despite the accompanying written text the music itself gets the message across in a way that words never could.
The CD starts off into wide expansive space, fresh and alive. Then it smoothly and seamlessly breaks into rhythm with jazzy élan. Expertly rendered ‘live’---sounding percussions and hot brassy synth lead licks abound as well. Classic rolling space flanges permeate the mix and create a tangible entrainment into the swirling vortex of the rhythm.
Once hooked, you are compelled to follow an unfolding plot which is lyrical and vibrant. And synth fans will sate their palates with cool synth bass and hot synth leads. Many tracks do tend toward the introspective but with charm and grace. Rumbling tectonics and dreamy strings are so well articulated you’d think it was a movie. Percussion is also dealt with professionally. ‘Native’ buzz clips mix with live ‘edrum’ performances that support and solidify the etheric.
This album most decidedly is a concept album, nearly on par with Tubular Bells. Echoes of Pink Floyd, Jarre, Stearns, Iasos and Shreeve are tossed in for good measure.
Snidow is a talented, versatile musician, just rough enough around the edges to make his music fresh and interesting.
Professional composition, engineering and all the rest make this a debut album of the year.
Play it loud!

Christopher Franke - Perry Rhodan Pax Terra

Artist: Christopher Franke
P: 1996

In late 1996 the album Perry Rhodan - Pax Terra was released, featuring a number of compositions based on the Perry Rhodan book series -- a musical hommage to celebrate the 35th anniversary of this German science fiction series that is issued week for week since 1961. With the exception of some vocal parts, sung by Rick Jude and Miko, most of the album is instrumental, stylistically somewhat similar to the material Chris Franke composed for the Babylon 5 series during the same time -- in fact, Perry Rhodan - Pax Terra could easily be the soundtrack to an unproduced movie.

Christopher Franke - The Celestine Prophecy

Artist: Christopher Franke
P: 1996
Taken as inspiration from a novel by someone named James Redfield, "Celestine Prophecy" is a very exotic album and much more sophisticated than his earlier solo works although it took a lot longer to get into. Some of these pieces have a sort of progressive nature to them due to the morphing changes in melody that make them almost like several songs in one. The opening track is an example which starts with a dramatic, almost serious tone with Central American drums, a frantic rhythm before gradually slowing down at first before becoming a beautiful, peaceful track of almost a totally different mood altogether in the last two-thirds. While the Redfield book itself is not really necessary to read in order to appreciate this music, a familiarity with the book will enhance one's listening experience. You can listen to this music hundreds of times, and not get tired of it. It is truly inspired. It's not only Franke's best work, but it is also one of the best new age albums ever released. Don't deny yourself the experience of this great spiritual journey.

Chuck van Zyl + Gulch - Regeneration Mode

Artist: Chuck van Zyl + Gulch
P:
1994
"Regeneration Mode" is an album by the duo Chuck van Zyl and Peter D. Gulch (both known from the project The Nightcrawlers) filled with vintage, but most of all adventurous and future electronic music.
It’s cosmic music pur sang, now and then briefly tapping in the heritage of the Berliner School style of the early '70’s while taking the listener out on a 60-minute atmospheric trip through the vast unknown.
The highly cinematic outcome though is less traditional. A deep sense of mystery already announces itself on the strong, almost 30-minute album opener "Sector Zero Zero One". It’s a beautifully moulded sonic sci-fi story through dense soundscapes with quite some turns and twists along the ride.
The album continues with four shorter pieces that keep immersing in darkening, dense atmospheric moods. Its compelling and robotic-like sound design stays away from the comfort mode, as alienating effects and quite some some industrial elements pass by. On "The Automatons", its like Patrick Kosmos is shortly taking over the control panels.
All in all, "Regeneration Mode" is outer space music with stark textures and a firm high-tech rim, making a fascinating sonic travel guide to possible future worlds beyond.
