Alien Nature
Alien Nature + Michael Brückner - The Dark Path
Artist: Alien Nature + Michael Brückner
P: 2017
On this CD they have composed music that is mainly in the Berlin School style. It combines driving, exciting, pulsating sections with eerie interludes. At times there is a little menace and unease about the music which fits the title perfectly.

Alien Nature + Michael Brückner - The Dark Path (Black Version)
Artist: Alien Nature + Michael Brückner
P: 2017 / 2018
A collaboration between a rising figure and another one more dominant of the Berlin School style EM has enough to feed the passions. Composed between 2013 and 2015, “The Dark Path” stages the music of Michael Brückner and Alien Nature (Wolfgang Barkowski) in an album which inhales these flavors of Klaus Schulze and Tangerine Dream in a universe of nebulosity pushed by very good movements of sequenced rhythms which seduced me with a big S!"Mandala" opens as in the nice time with slow veils filled of tones of old organ which go adrift like the movements of some slender sonic birds in search of our eardrums. Electronic noises and fine modulations, as well as another shaded wave carrier of faded voices, give life to this long prelude of ambiences which floats now with this soft flavor of Klaus Schulze's cosmic drift. The first beatings wake up at the 5th minute, spreading a base of soporific rhythm which stays prisoner of these luxurious Mephistophelian layers. Curiously, these beatings seem to awaken the faded voices which add now a touch of esotericism. A line of bass sequences is beating in the background. Fitting with the precious modulations which give so many charms to "Mandala", this line swirls among industrial noises before running mad like a cyborg through a metallurgical wall. Slamming percussions impose a more contemporary structure of rhythm, while the effects of synth stay in these effects ossuaries which charmed as much as created a sensation of fright when I listened to this music the head and the imagination decorated of blue smoke. These effects are transformed into Arabian tunes and the rhythm becomes more lively, pushing "Mandala" far from its lands of atmospheres but beyond those of "Endemonic Howls" whose pattern of morphic dance is fed by good effects of percussions and a suggestive line of bass sequences. This title is more in the psybient kind with an always dark approach which is inspired by tears of synth and by the effects of a sonic brook in suspension and of which the droplets run away in a horizontal passage. If the rhythm stays quiet, and finally falls asleep towards the finale, it remains very interesting to hear in night light, because of an ambient tribal approach which reminds to me a good Steve Roach moment. “The Dark Path” is built in a mosaic of effects of effects of dark ambiences and rhythms of around 80 minutes where every title binds its elements of atmospheres. The breaths which open "Auf Sibernen Pfaden" establishes a climate of mystery and plunges us in the golden years of Tangerine Dream; periods Phaedra and Stratosfear, especially with the galloping rhythm which emerges from layers of mist after the 4th minute. Comes then a revival moment of the analog years with this structure of rhythm which inflates among numerous effects of mist, of vapor and other effects at the same time cosmic and luciferian, in particular the noises of thunders and of ectoplasms which extricate themselves from layers of glaucous vibes. Ignoring the filters of those effects, a synth lights its harmony section in order to blow splendid solos which light the wilder rhythmic portion of "Auf Sibernen Pfaden". It's a superb Berlin School that we have here my friends! This odyssey of dreams pursues its road of charms until the sibylline atmospheres get a hold of the rhythm, making it as much smothered as its first beatings. A choir of chthonian voices draws then the landscape of "Auf Sibernen Pfaden" which, in 27 minutes, makes us travel towards the summits of the 70's Berlin School style. This is a great track which alone worth the price of the CD manufactured and produced by the English label New Harmony. How to talk about "Blissful" without speaking about its introduction and about its multiple reflections of sequences which sparkle as in these Tangerine Dream's concerts in 1986 and these elements of Jean Michel Jarre's atmospheres in Magnetic Fields. Although darker, the soundscape invades immediately our ears with this structure of stagnant sequences which serves as support for other wonderful synth solos. "Blissful" pours its last charms into "Ionic Master" and its more contemporary tribal structure of rhythm. A surprising and lively title, with good effects of melodies blown in heathen flutes, which sets free a really nice aspect of velocity in its atmospheres and in this rhythm, all the same rather stationary, and which reminds us a closer Klaus Schulze of the 90-00 years. With names such as Michael Brückner and Wolfgang Barkowski, the expectations can only be high. And the duet answers marvels with a strong album to which we savor from the very first breaths of "Mandala" until the finale of "Ionic Master". “The Dark Path” is at the crossroads of creativity with a very solid EM opus where the ages melt themselves in a musical scenario which allies the essence of the big names of the art, Klaus Schulze to Jarre via Tangerine Dream and Steve Roach, in an approach where the past is of use as carburetor to a new form of World EM.

Alien Nature - The Airtight Garage of Jerry Cornelius

Artist: Alien Nature
P: 2013
Is this still classical electronic music? Or is it already progressive rock? Anyway, Alien Nature always had a tendency to cover both, but this time its his closest approach to progressive rock so far. Lots of guitar riffs, heavy beats and rhythmic melodies in a battle between synthesizer, percussion and guitar.

Alien Nature - Who goes there?

Artist: Alien Nature
P: 2012
The 6. album from the artist Wolfgang Barkowski aka ALIEN NATURE follows its Alter Ego and developes a scenario in the deep space. A rythmic and pushing album, following the familiar sound of Alien Nature as is known from former albums.
"Who Goes There?" is a kind of reminiscence about Space Art. Each single track refers to book titles from Science Fiction authors. The title track "Who Goes There?" is an original title of the novella that was taken as the base for the movie "The Thing" (1951 Christian Nyby and 1982 John Carpenter).
The single tracks are food for thoughts about space ships, robots and space stations as well as stories about Science Fiction in common.

Hypnosphere - Magnetism

Artists: Hypnosphere
P: 2007

Even though there are eight index points this is really one track split into parts with each part running seamlessly from one to the next. Unlike their first album this one is a Berlin School fest right from the opening second.
An excellent atmospheric intro leads straight into the initial sequence which builds wonderfully to become a bass laden rumbling stormer. Massed choral pads increase the intensity to almost apocalyptic proportions. In the fifteenth minute the sequences depart and we enter water dripping subterranean realms. A fresh slow sequence emerges like some throbbing transformer which gradually becomes faster and increasingly complex as more lines of pulsations come to join it working up to quite an awe inspiring frenzy.
The Second Part is a short interlude of windy effects and electronic bleeps.
The Third begins with rainy effects then a locomotive chugging sequence followed by yet another sequence- quite awesome it is too- incredibly powerful in a rather Redshift sort of way. It constantly shifts its position within the mix as it rises and falls in intensity but when it is at its peak I wanted to punch the air with excitement.
The Fourth Part is much darker with ominous organ sounds creating quite an eerie atmos.
Mellotron and more stormy effects get the Fifth Part underway. More tron is introduced- this time of the celestial choir variety. We finish with the sound of what could be a spaceship coming down to Earth.
Part Six initially continues in this same vein before restrained sequences return. Indeed this is quite a subtle hypnotic track.
We return to atmospherics for the rather short Part Seven. It’s all rather dark and gloopy with some strange effects, a little like half heard chatter deep in the mix. Looped percussion, almost like a hammer on an anvil provides a curious focus.
The Final Part finishes the album off in style as yet another excellent sequence surges forward then more lines of pulsations fall into formation (some of them quite melodic) as things build and build until the fourth minute when the intensity subsides a little to allow for a regrouping then rejuvenated sequences and rhythms make one final wonderful surge.
A highly recommended album.

Hypnosphere - Within the Whirl

Artists: Hypnosphere
P: 2003
Joining forces in Hypnosphere are Lambert Ringlage, specializing in crisp interlocked arpeggiations anchoring beneath glittering elastic melodies, who is contrasted by Wolfgang Barkowski, known elsewhere as Alien Nature, creator of Dark Ambient sound worlds.
Together they have realized Within The Whirl, an album rooted to the traditions of classic Spacemusic yet with its sights set on the limitless borders of improvisatory textural explorations.
The five tracks on Within The Whirl present a complex motivic unity. Opening with swirling, undefined forms in space, each piece begins with a quiet nightmare painted in storm cloud purple and gray. The welcome entrance of tones pulsing and echoing out of these gloomy projections builds to a climax of dynamics, instrumentation and tension before reversing itself and unwinding back towards a placid conclusion.
These distinctive dotted rhythms oscillate the realizations between the atonal and tonal - cascading as white pin points around a line stretching forever into the cold blackness of space. On two of the tracks, if not the emotional plane then at least the energy level rises with the added intensity of certain protracted drum elements; however robotic.
Listening to Hypnosphere is a satisfying experience both for those steeped in the nostalgic remembrances of the Golden Age of Spacemusic as well as those who seek works that are more than a mere veneration of the past. The realizations made by the inheritors of this modern musical language reveal new truths about the original - Kosmische Musik.

Realtime - Swinging Amplitudes

Artist: Realtime
P: 2016

Swinging Amplitudes is the 6th album by REALTIME. Thomas Bock presents multifaceted EM compositions documenting his love with electronic music. With this, as well pure, sequenced tracks in the spirit of „Berlin School“ were created as well as spheric and epic tracks like from outer space. The result is an diversified and ambitious album.
Another highlight is the cooperation with Wolfgang Barkowski aka Alien Nature at the track „Psychedelic Emotions“. His synth-solo was a spontaneous and improvised contribution showing his human emotions about electronic music. As well the mastering of this track was done by Barkowski.
