Time Being

Time Being is the collaborative project of Jourdan Laik and Phillip Wilkerson.
Phillip Wilkerson was raised in a musical family and taught to appreciate and create music from a young age. He plays piano, guitar, and drums, and in his mid-twenties began experimenting with synthesizers. He has been recording and releasing ambient music since 2005 on a number of net labels, including Earth Mantra.
Jourdan Laik was influenced early on by classical music. It's from this music that he learned how to listen to music, not just hear it. He loved listening to all its intricate parts. Ambient and electronic music is a lot like classical music in that it requires listening. This is what attracted Jourdan to this genre and eventually into the world of wanting to share this experience by making the music.
Both Jourdan and Phillip are interested in expressing and capturing photographic and/or artistic images that relate to time, eternity, and capturing the presence of the current moment, that is, freezing a moment of time in an artistic expression. Their collaborative music is an attempt to do this (capture the presence of the moment) using audio and sound capture.

Time Being - A Dimension Reflected

Artist: Time Being
P: 2011
On their first collaborative release, A Dimension Reflected, Jourdan Laik and Phillip Wilkerson present eight thought-bending, deep drifting tracks of pure ambient spaces, where electronic yet organic, expansive washes of sound, drifting chords and swirling synthesizer textures communicate the resonant beauty of time and timelessness.
Laik and Wilkerson work together under the moniker Time Being, sharing a deep fascination about time and how we humans perceive it. "Our goal is to create tranquil and reflective ambient music suitable for relaxing, dreaming, thinking deeply and being in the present moment of time," they explain. "The suspension of time in living in the moment, and the perception of eternity in every minute."
This concept of the time-suspending power of music is a discipline also explored by artists like Steve Roach, Robert Rich, Brian Eno, Robert Fripp, and Klaus Schulze. The music of Laik and Wilkerson taps into that same eternal flow. Combining electronic instruments with deep, rich effects processing, Laik and Wilkerson create subtle but purposeful compositions of soundscapes - or timescapes - that guide the listener’s attention to full awareness of the eternal present moment, while simultaneously suspending the subjective passage of time.
Beatless—timeless—floating and quiet, A Dimension Reflected is music for mindfulness, for being present; it is Presence Music.

Time Being - An Ocean of Time

Artist: Time Being
P: 2020
With their acclaimed ambient/electronic music project Time Being, veteran spacemusic maestros Phillip Wilkerson and Jourdan Laik have been exploring the expansive sonic realms of atmospheric soundscapes for the better part of a decade. On their third album, An Ocean Of Time, the duo are in top form as they venture into over 70 minutes of deep-drifting, time-melting, soul-stirring bliss that hovers delicately at the fringes of darkness and light. Vast and immersive, the album’s fathomless spaces evoke a sense of ageless infinity. The sublime combination of synthesizers, electronics, spacial effects, and subtle swarms of orchestral wonder coalesce into a boundless auditory expanse where time is forgotten. Hints of cello and violin drift upon an open sea of textural ambience where slow-motion waves rise and fall in an infinite cadence of tranquility. Occasionally, pulsing electronics or melodic illusions come into focus, momentarily suspended in atmospheric space before gradually dissolving back into the ineffable void. Are we in the cosmos or is the cosmos in us? With soundscapes as expansive as the mind will allow, Phillip Wilkerson and Jourdan Laik musically ponder this question in an attempt to touch a perfect heart of awareness, presence, infinity, and the essence of being. The immersive ambient soundworlds that unfold throughout An Ocean Of Time foster a thought-provoking, introspective, deeply serene state of mind where linear time falls away to reveal the eternal now – one moment swirling in the endless ether of infinity…here, now, always.
