Stratosphere

Stratosphere is the belgium ambient project by the musicians:  Ronald Marien
Stratosphere started 1992 with creating musical compositions. These were experimental songs, in which he discovered the multiple methods of soundcreation and production. The first few tracks were more in the industrial direction. With the purchase of his first soundmodule, things went rolling. More melancholic sounds were created and the first soundscapes came to life. Through his higher education years, his musical direction was found, and with the growth of his equipement, the ideas went in the same direction. He met a friend which started a radioprogram concisting of dark ambient, spherical, and experimental music. He encouraged him to go and seek further. Through this friend, Stratosphere came in contact with Vidna Obmana. With Vidna Obmana's help and advice, things went really rolling.

Stratosphere + Dirk Serries - In a Place of Mutual Understanding

Artist: Stratosphere & Dirk Serries
P: 2013
LTD 200

An exchange of sound between Stratosphere (aka Ronald Mariën, Dirk Serries longtime soundtechnician) and Dirk Serries (VidnaObmana, FearFallsBurning, Microphonics, 3 Seconds Of Air, The Sleep Of Reason, Continuum). Drawing from genres like post-rock, shoegaze ambient, and drone music, In A Place Of Mutual Understanding beautifully blends all these style into a collection that is atmospheric, harmonic, dynamic and even dramatic. Created with electric guitars and basses and featuring an ethereal guest vocal appearance by Martina Verhoeven these pieces build waves of guitar patterns and textural washes, heavy stabs, and peeling figures into a stirring moodscape that s as uplifting as it is beautiful.
Vital Weekly s review of Stratosphere s Dreamscape album: While still involved in atmospheric music, guitars are fed through a bunch of guitar pedals and it sounds louder and darker than before. Despite the somewhat darker undercurrents of this album, there is still hope somewhere through gentle melodies singing, humming over the a black sea of drone like sounds. From the pure form of ambient music to the post rock variation of it, not the biggest move in the world but surely a nice one and great to see him back on track. Let s hope for some more.

Stratosphere - Aftermath

Artist: Stratosphere
P: 2014
LTD 300

Aftermath, the second Projekt release from Belgium’s Stratosphere (a.k.a. Ronald Mariën), is built upon layering shimmers of guitar and bass-generated tones and drones. The album’s core seems inspired by post-rock, drone ambient and the work of Fripp & Eno, yet it speaks its own expressive voice.  The stormclouds of guitar-generated soundsculpting utilize textures, sometimes shadowy, sometimes melodic and engaging, all swirling in slow dynamics of change to obscure and reveal the passionate resonance of the creator himself. On Aftermath, Stratosphere continues to explore the consequences of a darker period of life, still feeding on his recent experiences which influence compositions towards tension and emotional outbursts not found on early Stratosphere releases. These moods are translated into six tracks of an introspective, personal nature. For the listener, this emotion comes across as warm, satisfying and engaging: a towering sonic experience that is apprehensive yet unlifting. As the final track, “When You Think Everything is Alright…,” reveals, there is hope with a path for brighter futures. Hidden underneath the gloom, a strong and positive side shows through. Aftermath affects the listener, fluidly circling through crescendos of feelings, processed sounds and guitar drones.

Stratosphere - Rise

Artist: Stratosphere
P: 2016
LTD 300

Rise, the third Projekt release from Belgian soundsculptor Stratosphere (a.k.a. Ronald Mariën), is a world of shimmering drones, engaging post-rock, and quiet passionate ambient. Traveling further on the same road as Stratosphere's previous release, Aftermath, the guitars emerge in big layered clouds rising into the glowing sky through intricate applications of distortion and texture. Created with one electric guitar, a bass guitar and tons of pedals, Rise sounds clearer and more harmonic than its predecessor. The album displays an expansive emotional palette; the darker sounds are less harsh and, dare we say, optimistic. The difficult period of Mariën's life now behind him, a new dawn has risen and is audible in his music. Textura.org's comment on Mariën's previous release applies here as well: "Melody is more pronounced on the Stratosphere set, plus the music is less retiring and more assertive. There's an ambient-drone dimension in play for sure, but Mariën also works into the release elements of prog and post-rock. (...covering a lot of ground) the variety on display only makes the result more appealing." Creating music is an emotional release for Mariën with each track developed spur of the moment. Not knowing how each track will evolve - even for the composer himself - allows a discovery of the subconscious. Rise is seven tracks within the post-rock sound Mariën has traversed his entire career. Mysterious and mournful, the guitar-based moods of Rise have a sense of hopefulness - a calm sky opening after dark, difficult storms.
