Kelly David + Steve Roach - Broken Voyage

Artist: Kelly David + Steve Roach
P: 2002

Colorado-based electronic artist Kelly David's debut CD sets course on an ambient-electro-tribal adventure. Drawing imagery from uncharted waters and travels between desolate islands in the South Pacific, the CD takes the shape of a soundtrack journey. Kelly's fascination with pure sound design combined with natural sound sources, mid tempo grooves along with deep textures lead straight to the heart of musical darkness... and light in an inviting sort of way. A strong debut by an artist who has been working quietly towards this release for several years. Mixed at the Timeroom by Steve Roach.

Kelly David + Steve Roach - The Long Night

Artist: Kelly David + Steve Roach
P: 2014

THE LONG NIGHT is a deep-breathing sigh of the eternal nocturnal: gossamer atmospheres for the still hours of the night. Focusing on non-rhythmic, textural-harmonic electronic soundscapes, this collaboration unfurls like slow-moving, moonlit clouds. Although THE LONG NIGHT leaves the lighted world behind, its midnight path leads to a state of gleaming serenity and calmness. This music is contemplative, though not brooding: a meditative environment filled with open spaces and tendrils of sound composed of shifting subtle moods and gleaming electronic passages.
The collaboration began during several late night sessions at Kelly David's Denver studio, where the two artists carved-out the basic tracks using only analog modular instruments. The sonic palette expanded when the recording moved to Steve's Arizona Timeroom studio, bringing in a deeper textural quality utilizing processed acoustic sounds and an expanded collection of analog and digital synthesizers, plus subtle outboard processing. The final mix by Steve further uncovers a dimensional depth, delivering on the subtle and intricate tones of David's and Roach's years of journeying the ambient night skies through the long nights.
THE LONG NIGHT is a sixty-one minute mental excursion into unforeseen creative possibilities when the night becomes a special time beyond sleep, a contemplative zen noir of minimal radiant ambience.

Kelly David - Angkor

Artist: Kelly David

Kelly uses harmonically rich textures and surreal electronic sounds, along with ethnic-inspired rhythmic passages to express a travelogue of mystery, impending danger and the vastnass of a lost kingdom in the jungles of SE Asia. After the strong debut release - Broken Voyage - electronic artist Kelly David presents a big stride forward in his sound design, composition and flow. Going further into the themes of exotic distant places, here he draws on the specter found in the forbidding S.E. Asian jungles and to a distant past when the mighty Khmer civilization ruled from an immense temple city called Angkor.
In a similar way that David Parsons taps into an atmosphere and spiritual dimension of a geographic region, Kelly uses harmonically rich textures and surreal sounds along with ethnic-inspired rhythmic passages to express a travelogue of mystery, impending danger and the vastness of an area that is still being understood and explored on many levels today. Sonically, the CD is created primarily on analog modular instruments which results in a warm and rich sound. Mastered by Steve Roach.

Kelly David - Illusive

Artist: Kelly David
P: 2021

Illusive, Kelly David’s second release for Spotted Peccary, expands the ethereal, sylvan sound of his previous album Meditation in Green. Like its predecessor, Illusive revels in natural beauty, blending wilderness samples with luminous synths and psychedelic textures. Illusive, however, dwells as much in internal landscapes as external ones. Composed during the pandemic, these seven pieces explore the contrast between the calm quietude of David’s surroundings and the chaos of the outside world.
“Illusive” means “producing illusion” or “not what it seems,” and makes an apt title for Kelly David’s new album, an album of hidden depths. Crafted from an astounding list of electronic instruments from MOOG, Sequential, Nord and modular synthesizers, each piece moves fluidly from beat to beat, melody to melody, never staying in one place for long. And yet, Illusive imbues the listener with a sense of calm and stillness even as it remains in constant motion.

“Sentinel” pairs spritely synths with ethereal tones to conjure a sense of safety; the ever-shifting landscape beneath hints at a hidden anxiety, but the danger is always distant, never near. On “Top of the Trees,” sampled bird calls and skittering percussion evoke the avian clamor of the forest. Then, a threatening drone rises to the forefront like a windstorm sweeping through the woods, before it fades into a warm texture and all is calm once again. Finale “Northcoast” opens with sounds of crashing waves; then, an ominous hum simmers under shimmering tones, capturing the might and majesty of the open sea before, in the album’s closing moments, all falls into the waves once again.
With Illusive, Kelly David built the listener a sonic sanctuary. Illusive is a meditation on the endurance of beauty through troubled times. As these seven pieces morph from melody to melody—traversing stark silences and warm crescendos, cavernous atmospheres and celestial chimes—change is constant, but so is grace.

A long breath in a wooden flute is at the origin of this symphony of wind instruments that cradles our ears in the opening of Sentinel. Sometimes delicate, sometimes rough! As at times ethereal and at other times prismatic, the track drifts between its extremes by exploiting the different textures and personalities of the recorders that stretch their colors when confronted to the caresses of the orchestrations. The cinematographic aspect of this orchestrations' duel confronts us with these extremes where the choir of the angels confronts that of the drones which are as powerful as the most fluid of the voices. And if these scarlet filaments change the temperature of an emotional cycle always at the mercy of the American musician, the music heads towards a reef of confrontations around the 5th minute. The improbable is seductive when these voices of the skies' goddesses are taken hostage by an electronic rock disjointed between the looped riffs of an electric guitar and percussions drummed by the occult force of a one-armed drummer. And if I told you that this passage was obliged in order to smell the paradisiacal side of Sentinel. Would you believe me? And yet, with its first 3 tracks flowing from the same source and invoking serenity through the devil's gate, this brand-new album of Kelly David is woven far from the panoramas of Meditation In Green. We are indeed far from the ambient tribal anthems on this album whose strength is nourished by its sometimes subtle and often blatant paradoxes throughout its 68 minutes and some.
Palione takes over the destiny of Sentinel with an opening sewn in the disproportion of the emotions. Sometimes sudden, to startle, or serene, to make us dream, this bipolar structure brings out sequenced small steps just after its last tonal explosion. A short rhythmic test that is swallowed by the metallic squeals of the orchestrations that are the main essence of a structure that I would say is disjointed, without sounding bad. If the first two tracks are built from the same mold, Distance offers a better musical homogeneity, except for the few beats that disturb its last right. Garden of the Forgotten is like this lost pea in a tomato pot. Its electronic opening is reminiscent of Magnetic Fields I from Jean-Michel Jarre's 3rd album, Magnetic Fields. The sequencer erects a structure spinning on itself with greenish arpeggios dancing madly up until becoming indigo. The dubious breaths of a large piece of machinery in the background makes the ambiences of the title conform with its vision. And here as everywhere in ILLUSIVE, Kelly David seems to lack authority over his music. Probably the best moment of this album! And if we felt a kind of threat on this album from the first seconds of Sentinel, Top of the Trees confirms these doubts. First of all, the crumpling! It's like two sheets of paper being rubbed together over muffled explosions. The soundscape is the clear flow of a narrow river whose shimmering becomes a covetousness of the sequencer. The moans of mechanical dinosaurs are heard a little less clearly than these tools striking the ground within hearing range. Quietly, the water turns into a swarm of arpeggios that the sequencer twirls. And these last vestiges of the sequencer disappear in this tide of iisshh spitting out little by little these disappeared elements, except all traces of what was a rhythmic state as seductive as in Garden of the Forgotten. We enter the last right of the album with two long ambient tracks. If Into the Ether remains a soft whisper of a synth spreading its great protective wings, Northcoast is a track of the Dark Ambient genre with airs of lonely trumpets crawling on a slab of chthonic drones. Long-winded, the track explores the realm of muted impulses that push the bed of ambiences to create swirls and change tonal forms that keep us vibrating until the last breaths of ILLUSIVE.
Not really easy to approach, this last album of Kelly David rests on a daring bet to make the album advance by blocks, there are three of them, where the similarities facilitate its learning level. I must admit that my ears closed like oysters on the first 3 tracks. Afterwards, ILLUSIVE is a little gem of rhythms and ambient landscapes...

Kelly David - Meditation in Green

Artist: Kelly David
P: 2019

This is a psychedelic musical journey deep into the heart of Viet Nam’s Mekong Delta. Guided by rich ambient textures, manipulated field recordings, traditional instruments, and a blend of cultural and electronic percussion, the album offers a surreal sonic sojourn into a mysterious land defined by the power of a river and its influence, where nature has always been the dominant force. An immersive work, built upon deep evolving drones and dreamlike atmospheres, MEDITATION IN GREEN blends environmental field recordings with minimalist ambient textures to underscore nature as a significant component to the work. Subtly nuanced electronic soundforms inhabit the heart of the music as percussion elements ebb and flow, slowly winding through the ethno-atmospheric currents of sound, while thoughtfully placed micro events give depth to the experience, rewarding the discriminating listener with a revealing musical landscape. Pure, honest, and undeniably introspective, Kelly David’s masterfully crafted soundscapes bring to mind misty visions of a familiar unknown. Tensions build and release as the music moves through moods that are both soothing and challenging. Gongs, bells and the occasional emergence of authentic Vietnamese instruments signify the album’s deep relationship with SE Asian culture. The mesmerizing timbres and imaginative sound dimensions place the music solidly in world-bending ethno-ambient territory where distant dreams of the past collide with futuristic contemplations, creating a memorable experience that remains long after the music is gone.
