Minds in Motion

Very good sequencer-based music by Erich Schauder (Motionmania) and Gerda Picker. Sometimes reminds a bit on Tangerine Dream, but generally quite unique. Rhythmic and spacey at the same time.
Erich Schauder is also known as member of the band Motionmania.

Minds in Motion - Evolutionen 1 + 2

Artists: Minds in Motion
P: 2001
We begin very quietly with 'Evolutionen' and the sounds of gongs, chimes and waves. A dark drone gradually gets louder and louder. Sound effects can be heard in the background. A flute lead rises above the backdrop and a slow sequence starts up. A second sequence is added but everything is still restrained and peaceful. At six minutes however the sequences acquire more substance. It's a little like a cross between Peter Baumann and Rolf Trostel. This is wonderful stuff - if you like sedate classic beefy sequences that is.
'Morphische Felder' initially uses deep dark drones to create a dense background over which melodic pads float. A lead line (great sound) gently plays over the top then we enter a faintly oriental sounding section - all very tranquil stuff. At four minutes the mood changes completely as another heavy sequence comes in. Even though the sequence is a hefty one however the overall feel of the track is still laid back mainly due to the dreamy lead lines used, that is at least until just before the end where it really starts to kick. 'Formation' bubbles along quite nicely as a raft of sequence lines are built up. It's a complex but fascinating track, there's so much happening that it really takes a few plays to take it all in. We get a short drifting interlude with ten minutes to go. A rhythm starts to form and a fast sequence runs alongside it twisting and turning this way and that until the end. From a melodic start 'Ellipse' goes through a rather cosmic section then we get whole host of sequences underpinning flutey synth with high hat accompaniment. It's a very bubbly busy number but also somehow very relaxing at the same time.
'Mobile'. again deploys a complex interplay of sequences which are both mesmerizing and fascinating. Thunderous drums then come in and they herald a quickening of pace taking us to end the first disc on a high. The second disc begins with 'Charisma'. To start off with we are treated to the darkest moments on the album so far complete with the sound of some sort of engine in the background. Its all a bit odd actually - lawn mowers in space or something! We return to normality however as a pulse is heard low in the mix accompanied by a very pleasant melody. Its an ideal track to just chill to. Nearer the end it starts to sound like Baumann again - think of 'Biking up the Strand' from 'Trance Harmonic Nights'.
'Mysterium' comes next this time sounding more like Edgar Froese from his 'Stuntman' or 'Pinnacles' periods. The sequences are excellent but are not too intrusive, just playing one role in a superb but complex track. Everything is spot on, the melodies, subtle detail and the use of space all go together to make a track that left me thinking wow!
'Medusa' is another slab of pulsating brilliance but as we are now coming to expect its all so subtle. It sounds as if great effort has been put into every single note. The tracks never stay still for a moment and new delights are discovered with each play. It has to be said that this second disc does sound very influenced by Peter Baumann's first two albums and that is no bad thing. Having just written that we have slipped into an Edgar sound alike section again! Another nice thick sequence gets 'Wandlung' underway. More sequences surround the initial one - the number of notes per second must be extremely high at this point - then we start to get drum flourishes and the excitement builds. Oh this is so PB! There is no list of kit in the sleeve notes but they could either be using the same instruments he used or at least good sample discs of them. We finish with 'Planet'. Some great deep flute sounds provide an atmospheric start. There are some nice dark drones and then we get a piano melody. Some distorted speech can be heard in the background. We carry on in this tranquil manner even when a slow sequence starts up and the piano becomes more prominent. This is a very different track to anything else on the double CD but no less entertaining or intriguing. Minds in Motion certainly have their own twist on sequencer music. Somehow they manage to take a true and tested style and, though references to other artists can be made, most of the time they still retain a unique character of there own.
