Tollefson, David

David Tollefson is an experimental guitarist whose recorded debut came as a member (along with Hypnos founder and solo recording artist M. Griffin) of Viridian Sun on 1997's ambient/experimental work, Solar Noise.
Perhaps surprising for someone so dedicated to testing the limits of sonic experimentalism, Tollefson has extensive experience in such relatively "straight" rock bands as Mind Garage, The Spinsters, Dangerous Penguins, CMOS, and too many others to list here.

David Tollefson - Near and Far

Artist: David Tollefson
P: 1999
"Recorded in 1998 and 1999, this CD features 58 minutes of guitar treatments which, although some recognizable guitar strains are present, generally manifest as abstract auralscapes of empyreal definition.
This time, Tollefson turns his sonic expressions upon more earthly concepts, exploring tangible elements with his moody ambience.
The guitars still bear little resemblance to traditional strings, being transformed into textural structures of sound that reverberate but flow with transcendental verisimilitude. The patterns surge with languid power, straining against a barrier that is more metaphysical than corporeal.
Transforming a "Field of Blackbirds" into a liquid sound absent of any environmental quality, Tollefson applies a mutation of delineation to the concept, producing a condition that is too theoretical for clear imagery.
Each of these pieces are immersed in similar sonic rumination, detaching the listener from the physical world, plunging the music into hypothetical states which stimulate the mind with their absence of physicality. Tollefson uses each pulsation and trembling texture as verbs rather than nouns, forcing the audience to exert their own creativity to complete the communication."

David Tollefson - New Eyes of the Universe

Artist: David Tollefson
P: 1998
"Recorded in 1997, this CD features 61 minutes of treated guitars, processed with such extremism that their original nature is quite oblique. This ambient music takes a distinctly philosophical look at our physical continuum. The ambience here is a shade grittier, with a seething intensity that often supersedes the tranquillity.
The soundscapes commence with "Palomar", establishing an earthly vantage point for Tollefson's quantum observations. As these remote explorations continue to expand, they adopt spacier aspects. The voyage pierces a "Painted Sky" with spectral qualities, and enters the pulsations of "Some Light from the Heavens", persisting in its outward progression to the brief but expectant "You Are Almost There" and the ethereal "Planetal", finally reaching the shuddering celestial glow of the title track.
These tracks are short in duration, between two and six minutes. Such compression delivers their sonic points with succinctness and definition."
