Dutch Space Mission

Eppie E Hulshof makes Electronic Music since 1973. He also uses the moniker Von Haulshoven under which he loves to make electronic soundscapes and sequenced rhythm parts. So called "stone age sequences" combined with smack you in the face FX and orbit strings.E.R. (Bert) Hülshoff is also known as Phrozenlight under which name he makes very long dreamy ambient spacemusic. In 2006 Eppie Hulshof and Bert Hülshoff 'met' on an internet-forum about electronic music. Even though they made very different types of music, they found out they where influenced by the same electronic artists and liked the same music styles (blues, classic rock and metal).
They decided to make some music together, which resulted in the album “Dutch Space Mission”.

Dutch Space Mission - E-Live 2008

While out exploring the aural universe one would be most fortunate to come in contact with Dutch Space Mission (Epple E. Hulshof and Bert Hülshoff). Their floating electronic cosmos-scapes will cause the light years to pass quickly and the inter-stellar sights to be all the more wondrous to the traveler. Each of the four compositions on their live recording E-Live 2008 (153'21") begin very quietly. The duo may just be testing out their gear but more likely they are helping the audience align with the rhythm of space. The ethereal slow dance of tones nearly dissolves into glowing light as a thousand shards of spinning sounds go tinkling upward. Their lush abstract space narrows under rising sequencer patterns as motor-like rhythms steadily gain momentum and extend this voyage into tonal regions. Above echoing synchronization, calm lead melodies wind out. With realizations similar to, but somewhat more raw in execution than their fellow countrymen and space brothers Free System Projekt, Dutch Space Mission's elliptical voyages conclude where they began - in tumultuous layers of swirling sound. Like whispers in space their music leaves as much to the imagination as it reveals.

Dutch Space Mission - Masters of Space + Time

Artist: Dutch Space Mission
P 2007

Dutch Space Mission are really Eppie Hulshof and Bert Hulshof. Lovely lush half vocal pads provide a soothing but also ethereal start to 'Die Stimme Des Alls'. Gradually darker drones take a hold punctuated by some excellent twittering electronic effects. A first rate sequence gradually emerges then fades away again, keeping re-emerging and disappearing. All the time a wonderful but mournful cello melody almost weeps over the top. This is a very impressive start (with just a hint of Schulze). A deep bass throb takes over and another very Schulzian sequence rises to the surface. Things just get better and better as an additional sequence- a belting hundred mile an hour one, full of power and aggression erupts from the speakers. We build an enormous pure Berlin School head of steam then things suddenly decay to windy pads and what sounds like NASA samples as we drift off serenely into space.
We continue on in a similar state of float for the beginning of 'Kosmonautentraum'. This is well out there cosmic stuff with loads of lush overlaid constantly shifting pads and accompanying electronic twitters. Just when we are completely blissed out another sequence explodes on the scene, even faster, more powerful and awesome than on the opener. More sequences are added and they morph around each other wonderfully- this is so exciting! The pulsating mayhem develops something of a melodic quality- but this is melody with a mean bite. We return to the cosmos all too soon.
'E.G.B.E.R.T.' is all rather dark and eerie, hinting that there might be something rather unpleasant out there. A similar mood is taken through to 'Master of Time and Space' but if anything the atmosphere is even spookier. Half heard chatter mixes with ethereal pads and deep chimes. A slow sequence starts up and gradually builds but it is quite sedate and melodic one so also acts as a sort of lead line. It's really nice, getting under the skin causing the head to gently nod in time to the pulsations. A good track to finish a very enjoyable album.
