Benge

Ben Edwards, better known by his pseudonym Benge, has been exploring the sonic possibilities of electronic instruments since he was a young boy, in the1970s. After graduating from art school in 1990 he set up his own music studio and started recording his unique blend of experimental electronica, culminating in his debut album “Electro-Orgoustic Music” and the formation of Expanding Records in 1995. Since then he has released dozens of albums as Benge, as well as collaborating with various luminaries from the electronic music world on many other album projects. He has formed several notable and ongoing bands such as John Foxx & The Maths, Wrangler (with Stephen Mallinder / Cabaret Voltaire and Phil Winter / Tunng), Fader (with Neil Arthur / Blancmange), and his most recent project Creep Show (Wrangler + John Grant). Benge’s creative output now centres around his Memetune Studio Complex, located in one of the UKs remotest moorland locations, writing and producing his various music projects as well as making video art and TV programmes about his activities.

DiN brings its acclaimed Tone Science series to a close with The Final Patch, a celebratory double album that gathers twenty artists from across the series’ history. Since launching in 2018, the Tone Science sub-label has featured seventy-two musicians from diverse backgrounds, united by a shared fascination with modular synthesis and its boundless sonic potential.
In the seven years since its inception, the modular synth world has grown exponentially. While still niche, these systems are increasingly prominent in both studio work and live performance. The Final Patch marks a fitting end to the series with a carefully curated compilation that both honours the journey so far and gestures toward future possibilities.  Presented as a double CD, the release features contributions from key figures including Chris Carter, Benge, Hainbach, Scanner, and label founder Ian Boddy, who also contributes liner notes. An eight-page booklet includes an essay by Neil Mason, offering context and reflection on a project that has remained rooted in emotion as much as technology. As Boddy notes, “the emotional quality of the music is the single most important factor.” The Final Patch is a powerful and poignant conclusion to the series.

iNDEX09 is the ninth DiN compilation album and includes two tracks each from the titles
DiN81 – 89. The artists on show this time are Polypores, Benge, Parallel Worlds, Dave Bessell, Field Lines Cartographer, Sophos and ARC, as well as a collaboration between
Ian Boddy & Dave Bessell. Furthermore DiN86 was the highly significant 25 Years of DiN double CD album, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the DiN label, so there are also two tracks included from this release with tracks by Ian Boddy and Robert Rich. As with the previous eight DiN samplers label boss Ian Boddy has mixed and cross-faded the 18 tracks into a continuous ambient mix that not only showcases the albums featured on the release but presents an exciting and varied title in its own right. It also highlights the varied and intriguing music that the DiN label offers on its releases from deep analogue synth grooves through vibrantly melodic instrumentals to powerful, epic ambient atmospheres. An intoxicating mix of the old and new beautifully presented in a slimline cardboard wallet with an extra flap which just adds to the value and collectibility of this release. With a total release catalogue now of 131 titles the DiN label is continuing to innovate and evolve as it heads into 2025 with the next milestone of 100 physical releases for the main imprint coming into sight.

This is certainly a milestone release for the DiN label as it celebrates its 25th anniversary. Needless to say, this is quite an achievement for a niche, independent label that has relentlessly ploughed its own path for quarter of a century. Its catalogue and release schedule has been carefully curated over all these years by label boss Ian Boddy, who launched the imprint way back in the spring of 1999. It is perhaps a reflection of his own musical identity which, whilst grounded in the Berlin School of the 1970s, has continued to evolve and grow to cover ever widening areas of electronic music, where sub-genres can be mixed and matched at will. There have been plenty of compilation albums released on the DiN label in the past, most notably the iNDEX sampler albums, of which there have been eight to date. These cover tracks from existing albums and are certainly a great showcase for the label. However, this double album is different, in that Boddy invited the majority of the musicians who have previously been released on the main DiN catalogue to compose new pieces. Spread across two discs, this amounts to 142 minutes of sublime, varied and thoroughly original music. Ranging from beautifully ambient to dark brooding soundscapes, via cinematic electronica through to old school Berlin School sequencer workouts, “25 Years of DiN” is a wonderful distillation of the DiN label. Presented in a stunning six panel fold out Digipak double CD package with 8-page booklet featuring an essay by Neil Mason (Moonbuilding), this release is a must-have for collectors of the DiN labels output.
