Kitaro

Masanori Takahashi better known as Kitarō, (February 4, 1953) is a Grammy award-winning Japanese musician, composer and multi-instrumentalist. In the early 1970s, he changed completely to keyboards. He joined the band "Far East Family Band" and toured with them around the world. In Europe, he met the German synthesizer musician and former Tangerine Dream member Klaus Schulze. Schulze produced two albums for the band and gave Kitaro some tips for the use of synthesizers. In 1976 he left the band and travelled through Asia. Back in Japan, Kitaro started his solo career in 1977. The first two albums Ten Kai and From the Full Moon Story became cult favorites of fans of the nascent New Age movement.

Kitaro - 442 Extreme Patriots of WWII

Artist: Kitaro
P: 2010
The 442nd Infantry Regiment was a segregated unit formed by the United States Military.  This U.S. Army regiment, composed mainly of Japanese American soldiers, became one of the most decorated units for its size and length of service in the history of the United States Military. Due to their exceptional combat records and the high number of casualties, they were nicknamed the “Purple Heart Battalion.”  442, Extreme Patriots of WWII is a film about the 100th Battalion and the 442nd Regimental Combat Team who were first seen as the problem, but later proved to be the problem-solvers.  It's a story of the 442 veterans, their struggle and their victories as American soldiers and civilians.
Coupled with the film 442 - Extreme Patriots of WWII, is the music of world-renowned Grammy and Golden Globe Award-winning artist, Kitaro.  Kitaro's various sound collaborations and resonant, multi-textured compositions, with their crescendos of passion and oases of serenity dramatically intertwines a powerful and vivid sphere of consciousness to this riveting chapter of Japanese American History during World War II.  Also included on this disc is dialogue from the film, including current U.S. Senator Daniel Inouye, George Takei, decorated veterans and Medal Of Honor Recipents.

Kitaro - An Ancient Journey (2CD)

Artist: Kitaro
P: 2002
This two-disc set, featuring 19 unique compositions, is a wonderful glimpse into the great civilizations past. In An Ancient Journey, Kitaro takes his audience on a trek to worlds far away using traditional Middle Eastern and Chinese instrumentation. Listeners embark on a mysterious crusade, witnessing "the texture, life and spirit of the world's ancient people.
Quick on the heels of 2001's Ancient, Japanese synthesist Kitaro returns with another CD based loosely on themes of ancient global sites, a template that's growing as old as the sites that inspire him. But while those sites become more inspiring with age, Kitaro's hackneyed sampled choirs, syrupy strings, and that whooping synthesizer line he's used since Astral Voyage a quarter century ago are becoming more kitschy. However, there are hints of something new on An Ancient Journey that make it Kitaro's best album in a few years. His use of environmental sounds goes beyond cliché, weaving them into the music as rhythms and counterpoint instead of simple backdrops. In addition, Kitaro plays Native American flute on several tracks, and the simplicity and one-octave range of the instrument seem to focus him into a delicate, more personal sound heard on pieces like "Waves of Sand" and "Inca." But he also finds fresh life on one of his patented dervishes, "Sitara IV," playing electric sitar over a modal percussion groove. As a double CD, An Ancient Journey is bloated, but there's an album's worth of music that nearly fulfills the promise of Kitaro. --John Diliberto

Kitaro - Ancient

Artist: Kitaro
P: 2001
Take an extravagant excursion through the ancient civilizations of Egypt, Mesopotamia, the Indus Valley and China. Kitaro manages to transport the listener to a mystical and contemplative place with the glorious textures of Great Pyramid. This magical journey also features the majestic and dramatic resonance of Nile and the eloquently evocative Unicorn, with it’s airy, almost playful melodies.
Ancient ma
nages to create audio imagery with exotic, unpredictable sounds, ancient wind instruments, and among other things, the synthesizer. The result is a sound that seems primeval, yet Kitaro’s artistic sensitivity makes it distinctly modern, ultimately exploring the connection between humans and the earth itself, which remains eternally beguiling and wonderously captivating in mysteries.
