Ether Dome has a fine balance between pure atmospheric tracks and predominant melodic ones. The fact that stands out is Bone's ability to achieve the maximum effect with repeating occasional minimal patterns of seductive synth sounds. Song titles are deliciously obscure, but the music contained on Etherdome is wonderful. The album opener, "The Induction of Gilbert Abbott," has floating piano-like notes counterpointed by swirling lush washes of synths and synth choruses. It's a classic space music track for sure. "Unawakened" begins with some quasi-Tim Story minimalism, as a subtly muted electric piano and synth entertain a delicate yet beautiful simple refrain, soon joined by low key synth strings. As the album progresses, songs continue in a relaxed yet never soporific vein. Trust a genius like Richard Bone to record an album that can be this serene while still infusing the music with enough "quirkiness" (sorry, couldn't resist) to keep it away from any new age noodling or over-the-top relaxation excesses.

Richard Bone is an enigmatic composer whose inventive musical style has gained many plaudits over the years and this superb new studio album finds the artist in top form. Images from a Parallel World contains creative instrumental music of the highest quality, music without boundaries that shifts with consummate ease from the eclectic and uniquely Richard Bone rhythmic styled musical soundscapes, to the ethereal, ambient and electronic for which he is also very well known. The 12 tracks cover vastly different moods yet remain a cohesive whole as he takes the listener on an entertaining voyage through uniquely varied musical worlds. The album was co-produced by David Wright who worked with Richard Bone during 2012 on the production and of this extraordinary album. Richard has gone on record to state that Images from a Parallel World is, in his opinion, his best album too date.

The CD opens with "Indium Part I", a 5 minute introductory piece consisting of a soft piano melody and electronics. "Indium Part II" is a 30 minute epic that opens with a spacey vibe and includes low drones, pulsating tones and sound waves, and what sounds like high speed traffic in space. Piano soon joins in with another gentle melody along with choral electronic strings. Bone does a good job of bringing together the meditative melodic and spacey avant-garde elements into a harmonious whole. After a while a repetitive keyboard pattern kicks in that reminds me of some of Manuel Goettsching's guitar creations, and the resulting atmosphere seems to draw on ambient, kosmiche, and maybe some prog rock influences. The rest of the CD consists of dreamy ambient pieces that reflect Bone's interests in accessible melodic music and more avant-garde investigations, though his real strength, and what makes "Indium" such an enjoyable listening experience, is his ability to seamlessly blend the two together. It's nice to have a peaceful floating journey that also provides a little something challenging for the attentive listener.

“Serene Life of Microbes” is full of superb analogue electronic music that cleverly manages to be gentle, dark, beautiful and strange. It is a masterful ambient work that stirs up deep echoes of atmospheric space music from a bygone age. And yet “Serene Life” also manages to convey a strong contemporary mood that drifts in and out of a sublime beauty that is never less than utterly compelling. In his new album “Serene Life of Microbes” released by the English AD Music company the composer is being plunged in profundity of the microcosm. You hear this music and as if you peep in a magnifying glass of a microscope. And you just cannot tear yourself away from it. The whole universe is being open up before your eyes, it becomes larger and larger and you become aware how colossal it is. And this immensity scares you. As well as the inhabitants of this boundless world do. They are full of a captivating beauty, they are living beings who live in this boundless world their own life which is understandable just by them alone. Where from and what for did these cosmos messengers arrive? And you realize that these creatures are mortally dangerous though they look so peaceful and inoffensive. They seduce by their sparkling luminescence, they tempt. And it becomes impossible to get rid of this hypnotic inclination. And you just start reflecting on the fact how often we get enchanted with the beauty which turns out to be just a tempting bait. And once “sticking” to this beauty you will be lured fast into a trap and will never get out of it. The “Serene Life Of Microbes” album is kept up in an austere ambient style. Richard Bone works over the sound in a masterly fashion creating “proprietary” surroundings peculiar to him alone. You can single out any note, enjoy each rustle taken separately, and all of them are the integral part of the composition. There is nothing to excess here. You realize that the picture will be imperfect when only a note is missing. And at the same time Bone’s minimalistic music is very splendid.
The “Serene Life Of Microbes” album discloses new features of Richard Bone’s talent. Once you have managed to listen to this album attentively you will like to hear it again and again since the travel together with this music brings you back to the real world at which you start to look otherwise.

The Reality Temples provides ample evidence that Richard Bone is continuing to evolve from earlier efforts, such as Coxa, Electropica, Ascensionism, and Disorient, allowing his music to migrate into previously unexplored territory. Still, he retains many of the elements that have engendered him to his loyal fans, notably his expert integration of electro-organic beats/rhythms with keyboards that combine jazz, funk, and (now, more prominent) world music textures with inventive production techniques and a sly wit. Richard Bone trains his wry eye and his wicked sense of musical humor backwards to the psychedelic era of incense, black lights, and the dawning of the West's fascination with East Indian mysticism on The Reality Temples, his latest exercise in funky rhythms, smooth cyber-jazzy melodies and laid back grooves. Once again, he proves adept at producing true fusion music, this time melding ethnic percussion and East Indian musicality (notably, a fair amount of sitar sounds) with his patented mellow keyboards and adding a dash of '60s acid-drenched spices.
