Dithmar

Born in 1968 in Frederiksberg, Copenhagen, Dennis Dithmar used his young years playing all sorts of air instruments at home while attending school at Sankt Annæ Gymnasium, one of the country's most highly recognized musical colleges. Kraftwerk, Klaus Schulze and Tangerine Dream were and still are some of Dithmars biggest sources of inspiration. From the middle of the 80's he played several synth bands and did music scores for a number of small experimental Danish films aswell as attending some exibitions on modern Danish art museums.  When jungle and drum'n bass hit the country Dithmar turned focus on that, producing and mixing for several artists aswell as releasing a solo-album under the name of Computa in 1998 with a number of guest artists - Trentemøller, N.I.S., DJ Caspar and Dj Pyro, along with Danish keyboard legend Kenneth Knudsen. The last couple of years Dithmar has been working on two separate fronts. Together with NamNam Records delivering a number of tech/club tracks, and the big acknowlegdement project making remakes and his own Zeit-tracks all inspired by the old german heroes: Kraftwerk, Schulze and Tangerine Dream. This project has now developed into his first solo release in a decade - Zodiac Zeit

Dithmar - Zodiac Zeit

Artist: Dithmar
P: 2009

Zodiac Zeit refers to the era in West Berlin in the late 60's and early 70's, when the biggest pioneers in what would later be known as electronic music met at the Zodiac Free Arts Lab. Conrad Schnitzler, Edgar Froese and Klaus Schulze was just a few of the great minds gathered at this small but vibrant cultural mekka. It all happened in the shade of the East German flag, as the city was literally surrounded by the East German Republic. A factor that had a huge impact on the citizens of West Berlin - not only political but very much on their culture as well. It was obvious that the West Berliners strived to be different and do things their own way.
This situation is culturally very similar to the situation in Copenhagen today. The Freetown of Christiania is surrounded by a society that wants them to do things the ordinary way, but the cultural life of Christiania keep delivering artists and acts that do things their own way. Danish electronic legend, Anders Trentemöller, is a typical product of the vibe that rules at Christiania, as is Dithmar. The two had the pleasure of working together in the eighties, as Trentemöller participated on Dithmar's first solo album, Computa, from 1998.
Zodiac Zeit is made as a tribute. It all started when Dithmar started recognizing his old German roots on the electronic music stage, and made a few remakes of TD and Schulze tracks. TD fanzone frontrunner, Chris Newman, discovered these tracks, and started playing them on his TDFZ online radiostation. The reactions on Dithmar's Myspace profile pushed him into making his own tracks and the Zeit Project was born. Dithmar chose to stick to the original sentiment - recognizing his respect for the old Berlin School music. Hence that the obvious musical link to Froese/Schulze is not a coincidence. It is indeed very close to the sound of Dithmar's old heroes.

On March 11th, 2011, Japan had to experience the most powerful earthquake of its history. Pictures of the following Tsunami were seen around the world. This natural catastrophe caused extensive and long lasting consequences. In one word: Fukushima.
Ten thousands of people died, hundred thousands are homeless. Families, children and old people are fighting for their livelihood. The world is shocked and takes share in the fate of the concerned. The quiet and proud japanese people welcome this solace. But even a country like Japan cannot manage the enormous challenges alone. Therefore, the consoling words have to be followed by action!
Based on this thought, Mellowjet-Records started the project "Electronic Music FOR LIFE" shortly after the catastrophe. The idea was to release a compilation and to donate the complete revenue to a charitable organisation. The response and readiness of the addressed artists to support this project was overwhelming. So, INTERDISC agreed to sponsor the first release of a double-cd-production. Even more artists joint the project.
The Eroc Mastering Ranch offered a free audio mastering. Company Rebeat offered the free digital marketing and added a special sponsoring package. A survey among the participating artists confirmed, that the revenue should be donated to the Deutsches Rotes Kreuz (DRK). Due to this remarkable development the DRK was convinced to support this project by allocating their logo. Within a few weeks only, Mellowjet-Records was able to compile and produce an excellent, 150 minutes long double-cd which involves all faces
of contemporary electronic music. Most of the 27 songs from 27 different bands and musicians have been composed exclusively for this project.
Only to mention some: Robert Schroeder, Eroc, Bernd Kistenmacher, Rolf Maier Bode, Harald Grosskopf, Mythos, Matthias Beine, Wellenfeld, Dithmar, moonbooter, Uwe Reckzeh, Spyra and many, many more. Besides dreamy sequences of Berlin School, powerful chorals, piano-ballades, orchestral works and danceable electronic music this double-cd offers as well experimental pieces, synthiepop, spacerock, chillout and ambient
music. Thus, this album should be part of every collection!
All artists as well as the label waive their share of profits. The whole revenue from sales of the double-cd and downloads will be donated to a project of the Deutsches Rotes Kreuz and will support the people in Japan directly.
Please support the victims in Japan by buying this album. Even if the world tends to forget quickly: the misery will remain in the everyday life of the people in Japan for a very long time.
Thank you very much!
