Artist: Lionel Palierne
P: 2021
There are two ways of producing works of “Berlin School”: the one which consists in taking up and perfecting the techniques of this style which was born in the mid-1970s, and the one which consists in inventing new ones. Within PWM we have goldsmiths who belong to the first category such as Kryfels, Moon Satellite and Sequentia Legenda. while others are inclined to invent new ways of doing things, we think of Olivier Briand, Zanov, Kurtz Mindfields, the duo Frédéric Gerchambeau and Bertrand Loreau, and Jean-Michel Maurin too. Lionel Palierne belongs to the latter category. He innovates by the sounds he creates, a lot by his original harmonic research, and, obviously, by his very particular phrasing. Lionel's music falls under the "Berlin School" category because it is escape music that harnesses the fascinating power of sound, and the hypnotic, haunting character of sequences. It keeps its qualities of this style, and at the same time, it draws it towards a more ambitious music which could enter the register of the classical contemporary music. You have to listen to Lionel's music with a desire to continue the journeys offered by cosmic music, accepting that it is the music that would come from elsewhere, and to us. It's as if this music, at times moving, is not just human. It associates feelings of uneasiness, strangeness, it is disturbing at times, but at the same time one cannot help but follow it because it is in every chord or melodic line the promise of deep and unpredictable emotions. Lionel is one of the most amazing artists that electronic music has known. His art, which comes from the 70s, is unlike any other, and exceeds that of several "stars" from the world of synthesizers, new-age or even ambient, whose works, although interesting sometimes, in remain at the level of the illustration of a discourse anchored in its time. Lionel's music speaks for itself. It doesn't need words to be forward thinking and one of a kind and, perhaps, to eternity, because it invents a new language. An eternity in the image of Antarctica that we guess to illustrate this disc; a drawing that Lionel had created in the 80s when he was playing with Bertrand Loreau. There is perhaps no coincidence in this evocation because we all have within us the images of these icy landscapes, both cold and sunny, which correspond well to the music of Lionel which is both rigorous and biting like ice cold, but also luminous, like the sun rising over the immense white.
