Arkenstone, David

After coming to California from rural Chicago at age 10, David immersed himself in all the music he could find. Spending high school and college in various bands and performance groups, he then criss-crossed the country several times playing popular music. He finally settled down to concentrate on developing his own sound, and when computers and instruments could finally communicate to each other, David knew his time had come. He could now hear a good portion of what he could imagine.
"Technology has produced some wonderful tools for making music. The computer allows me to fully orchestrate my pieces and really fine tune them," said David.
David's music has recently been described as Cinematic new age rock. "It is sometimes difficult to categorize my music and this is a term I can live with," David responded.
"I enjoy bringing many different influences together in my music," he continues. World music, classical rock, and new age are some of the styles I draw from and enjoy weaving into an entertaining and adventurous whole.
"I have always loved the sound of the orchestra. Now I believe I have refined a wonderful blend combining the best elements of the acoustic world, with the electronic world."
When not chained to his Apple Macintosh composing, David likes to play baseball, create 3-D art projects, and write screenplays.

David Arkenstone + David Lanz - Convergence

Artist: David Arkenstone + David Lanz
P: 1996
This cd is recommended as a nice sampling of the works of 2 of the leading new age artists. It has a good variety of tracks. Arkenstone uses more synthesizers and crescendos, while Lanz is predominantly piano, with orchestration, and more laid back. The cello piece is unbelievable!
David Lanz's and David Arkenstone's "Convergence" is truly a remarkable piece of music. What is so great is that it is very diverse, meaning there are a variety of songs with different styles to listen to, but at the same time they all go together.

David Arkenstone - Enchantment A Magical Christmas

Artist: David Arkenstone
P: 1997

Enchantment: A Magical Christmas, released in 1997, is the tenth full-length album from David Arkenstone. Of the album's 12 tracks, seven are gathered from various multi-artist Christmas compilations from the Narada label, and five were especially recorded for Enchantment: A Magical Christmas. The musicianship and sound quality of this album are gratifying.

David Arkenstone - In the Wake of the Wind

Artist: David Arkenstone
P: 1991
Composer and multi-instrumentalist David Arkenstone has two distinct musical realms he loves to explore: world-influenced contemporary instrumental, such as last year's Grammy-nominated Citizen of the World, and symphonic pop and rock, such as this 1991 Grammy-nominated masterwork. An hourlong instrumental journey, In the Wake of the Wind is the dazzling soundtrack to the journeys of an adventurous young man named Andolin who wishes to roam the stormy seas that swept his grandfather away. The album is accompanied by a foldout map and text in the vein of master fantasy author J.R.R. Tolkien, although, in the liner notes, Arkenstone also urges listeners to conjure up a personal narrative. The composer's spirited sense of adventure imbues these 16 tracks with a life of their own. Certainly the album's best moments are its orchestrally driven pieces, most notably the gracefully elegant "Southern Cross," which features pristine acoustic guitar sounds, and the triumphant "Overture." However, slower pieces such as the sensual, Middle Eastern-flavored "Rug Merchant" and the soothing children's choir in "Sailing" provide a delicate balance to the more playful, boisterous compositions. Arkenstone also dedicated the tender "Morning Sun on the Sails" to one of his principal musical influences, the late Aaron Copland, a composer who also crossed genre boundaries. --Bryan Reesman

David Arkenstone - Island

Artist: David Arkenstone
P: 1989
This was an early David Arkenstone CD, back in the fairly generic New Age heading. Some hints of David's amazing musical ideas can be heard here, especially in the amazingly beautiful songs Passage and The Palace.

David Arkenstone - Quest of the Dream Warrior

Artist: David Arkenstone
P: 1995

Either as individual songs or as a soundtrack for your mental movie, this is a superb piece of work. The individual cuts exactly suit their titles or purpose, whether "Dance of the Maidens" (which sounded like medieval girls dancing to someone listening with me who hadn't even looked at the jewelcase) or "Kyla's Ride."
