Picture Palace Music

Thorsten Quaeschning out of Berlin. Also member of Tangerine Dream.
He is head of the Project 'Picture Palace music'.
Main idea of the group is to reproduce the musical dynamic and experiments of old 'live' accompaniment for silent movies and to give them a modern soundtrack with nowadays technical options. This shows that the old silent movies are not 'moldy': They are timeless and fascinating! The music, which Thorsten 'Q' Quaeschning has composed inspired by the more than eighty years old silent movie is outstanding. The seventeen powerful tracks 'Somnambulistic Tunes' are a deep trip into a mystical world of sounds!

Picture Palace Music - Metropolis

Thorsten Quaeschning’s legendary “Picture Palace Music“ is beginning to write history. Do you like being close to the action? We dare to give you an advice then: Don’t miss to have this fantastic CD!
Inspired by Fritz Lang’s “Metropolis“ from 1927 this silent-movie- soundtrack captures very well the spirit of the author’s expressionist vision of the future – a bold challenge which Thorsten and his band are coping marvelously. Electronic Post Rock at its best!

Picture Palace Music - Remnants

REMNANTS is a non-verbal film that explores the rise and fall of the Neolithic civilisation of Britain via motion controlled, digital timelapse cinematography. In one of the longest continuous cultural developments ever known, for nearly 3000 years the people of the Neolithic era constructed some of the most enduring monuments in the world – standing stones and stone circles. Having been dismissed for centuries by much of academia as the work of "illiterate barbarians," research in the 20th and 21st centuries by a handful of persistent investigators has revealed these Megalithic sites to be not only amongst the oldest, but perhaps the most profound. Little is known of this civilisation, and its people have all but vanished without trace. All that is left are their remnants, and they too, in the crush of ‘progress’ are disappearing. This is the music that is from this fil.

Picture Palace Music - Somnambulistic Tunes

Artist: Picture Palace Music
P: 2007
An ambitious and interesting project which starts in a beautiful way with Somnambulistic Tunes, witch is inspired by Das Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, of Robert Wiene. This pioneer film of the German expressionism cinema was release in 1919 and tells the story of a mysterious travelling acrobat who makes commit crimes by a sleepwalker. The spirit of this picture is describe as dark and very nightmarish. On this level, the work of Picture Palace Music does not reach such a paroxysm. On the other hand Thorsten Quaeschning astonishes by delivering a very atmospheric opus where the drama is finely present on superb orchestral arrangements.

Picture Palace Music - Symphony for Vampires

Artist: Picture Palace Music
P: 2008
Quaeschning presents a fully developed thematic work with an ensemble cast, including players on guitars, synths, drums, bass, clarinet, voice, and something called an Irish Bouzouki. The end result provides a compelling story in music and words.
It plays very much like a soundtrack, part symphony, part synthesizers and rock music.
Some tracks are upbeat, some are uplifting, and some are low-key, even sad, such as “Waving Goodbye, Waving Waving.” Titles seems to describe scenes and dialogue, adding to the story line. Often the music has powerful emotional impact, as on the majestic, sweeping “Knock Knock” and “Demeter-morph,” both aided by a strong rhythmic component that really drives the music home.
More relaxed moods are explored equally effectively on gentler numbers such as “Sleep well, Elisabeth.” Both the quieter and louder tracks have strong guitar solos, and the one here is particularly nice, adding depth without overpowering the softer elements.
On the other hand, “Scholmance Trance” totally rocks!
