Koepper, Jeffrey

Renowned for his technical abilities and restorative powers, Jeffrey Koepper is distinguished for his work in maintaining and reviving vintage electronic music equipment. Elsewhere, he (along with Kelvin Russell) was known as half of Pure Gamma, a duo that brought together the old-school ambience of the '70s with the techno/chillout culture of the '90s. In 2003, Koepper finally popped his head up from behind his vast museum's worth of gear and presented the world with a long-awaited studio album. Etherea demonstrated a mastery beyond the technical side of his craft. The music alternates between analogue bubbles and digital ice, and bright, smooth, spacious tonal landscapes.

Jeffrey Koepper - Luminosity

Artist: Jeffrey Koepper
P: 2009
Luminosity is Jeffrey Koepper's fourth solo release. Like his previous albums, it is composed entirely with vintage analog synths, drum machines and analog sequencers. With Luminosity Koepper explores new emotional ambient places. Each track will take the listener to different sound worlds. Koepper uses a combination of ambient textures, sequencer rhythms and deep atmospheres to create these emotional lush structures. Luminosity has a very organic flowing feel and its moods touch somber peacefulness as well as ecstatic hopefulness.
Fantastic music in the style of late 70s and early 80s Tangerine Dream.
On Luminosity (73'32") Koepper realizes nine multi-layered and multi-faceted electronic pieces that fit nicely alongside precedent releases by acclaimed Spacemusic luminaries. The distinguishing characteristic of Luminosity is its cerebral (sometimes solemn, sometimes ecstatic) energy. This CD achieves the heights of Koepper's best work all the while reaching into the depths for meaning - taking us even further into Koepper's creative center. Avoiding digitalism he leads listeners on a heady musical journey full of Mellotron pads, buzzing filter sweeps, simple waveforms and a complex landscape of synchronized sequencer controlled patterns. Stepping through each measure, the machine-like rhythms repeat and grow additional lines - each in and of itself a deceptively simple arrangement of rests and notes.

Jeffrey Koepper - MantraSequent

Artist: Jeffrey Koepper
P: 2017

Creating the music of tomorrow with the analog technology of yesterday.
Poly-rhythmic sequential melodies of warm, emotional electronics propel MantraSequent, an album created on vintage synthesizers and sequencers. Koepper’s reputation as a skilled composer in the Berlin school shines on his 10th release influenced by early EM artists Tangerine Dream, Jean Michel Jarre, Klaus Schulze and Steve Roach.
Both dynamic and atmospheric, this sequencer-driven spacemusic brings classic circuits to life via intense interlocking rhythms, thick drones, evolving pulsing meditations, deep textures and lush soundworlds. Carrying the listener through the wires and switchboards of Koepper’s sonic vision, he creates an organic, flowing interconnectivity between these nine electronic mantras.
Koepper muses, “I have loved these instruments since I bought my first analog synth, a Crumar Spirit, in the 80’s. This discovery changed my life and allowed me to see the power and beauty of classic technology. The sound, the look and interface was what really drew me to explore with these instruments. Synths of that era have a purity and power in tone that can’t be matched by modern software instruments. The knob-covered tactile interface allows me to intuitively sculpt new sounds and interact directly with the internal components. I can always produce new and amazing textures each time I switch them on, and when composing music with multiple synths and sequencers, the atmospheres they create ebb, flow and melt together like an aural alchemy creating a new pallet of tone colors and moods.” Steve Roach coordinated this release with Projekt Records and added spacial enhancements and sonic detailing to the final presentation.
“Somewhere between the academics of Minimalism and the expansiveness of Spacemusic… Koepper and his cult of sonics venture into the challenging realm of technology and creative impulse – in a questing, ever-roving engagement with Electronic Music.” – Chuck van Zyl / STAR’S END
MantraSequent keeps analog music alive in the 21st century.

Jeffrey Koepper - Momentium

P: 2006

Composed and performed by Jeffrey Koepper

Steve Roach - xpander textures on track 2,6 and 7
Kelvin Russel - additional synthesizers on track 1

Track 3 is dedicated to the memory of Michael Garrison

Working with museum-grade synthesizers and sequencers brings the realizations of Jeffrey Koepper all the closer to the electrical current at the source of all electronic music. His cache of late model gear operates at the mechanical level today's virtual modeling synthesizers attempt to recapture. Certainly Koepper's diagnostic familiarity with this equipment informs the music on Momentium.

An interesting balance between sensibility, technology and technique, this album presents eight pieces which range from fluttering thought tones, to echoing synth pulses, to cerebral powered beatbox. Influence is an invisible shadow cast on this work, as Koepper is ever reverential to both the artists and engineers who pioneered the genre he now navigates within. His endless fascination with the sequencer, a device meant to provide a steady run of predetermined notes, dominates this disc. The interlacing latticework of patterns becomes an animated force carrying reverb laden harmonic figures into the foreground. Koepper's subtle real-time adjustments to timbre and counterpoint provides this work with enough variation to keep it out of the realm of minimalism while referencing this genre's pulsing motorlike motion and incrementally expansive growth.

Jeffrey Koepper - Sequentaria

Artist: Jeffrey Koepper
P: 2008

His third CD is a robust tour of 1970s and '80s sequencer music - falling somewhere between the venerable Poland, Oxygene and Equinoxe. Although inspired by the first era in electronic music we recognize as our own, Koepper is unafraid to be unfaithful. The originals disappear into this artist's core and the music becomes his alone. Using classic analogue instruments alongside modern hybrids, intertwining sequencer patterns head for the horizon while churning synth pads and buzzing keyboard melodies rise skyward. Electro-percussion approximates a samba rhythm section and ambles through a synthetic landscape rife with heady lead lines. Robo-drums march beneath swelling harmonies, chirping alien-choir and fat tunes spun on vintage gear. From brave anthems and galloping arpeggios all the way down to the introspective phasing of two oscillators, Sequentaria shines brightly in the Spacemusic continuum.
