`Always hold the light` is a fine piece of spiritual, joyful, ambient Rockmusic. It awakens one`s inner personal view to deeper soul connections and shifts into a higher, brightfully state of consciousness with spiritual awareness. Haralds heart touching Guitarriffs accompanies the creative ambient keyboardsounds and caresses the warm, expressive voice of Dagmar. Fassbender plays keys and guitar and Klaus can be heard on his Megatron, the digital Mellotron. So, he temporary put away his electric guitar. “Heartbeat” consists of very quiet, dreamy electronic music which opens and ends with the sound of a beating heart.

Mind Over Matter - Avatar

Artist: Mind Over Matter
P: 1998

The outstanding number is the title track ‘Avatar’, twenty minutes of pure brilliance. It is a collaboration with Stephen Parsick who’s album ‘Traces of the Past’ has only just fallen out of our charts (and this only because we ran out of stock) after having been there for months. ‘Avatar’ unbelievably however is even better than anything on that album. Things start quietly enough but then a guitar sequence can just start to be heard. The guitar being very processed so that it sounds like another synth as on Ashra’s ‘Inventions for Electric Guitar’. We then get a trademark Parsick sequence combining in such a way with the guitar as to send shivers of excitement down the spine. A rhythm is then added and cosmic shimmers blast over the top like a meteor shower burning up as it plummets earthwards. Intensity builds and builds. The track will appeal to sequencer nuts such as me but it is so much more than that. You are hit with a whole wall of pulsating sound with so much in it shifting and gyrating that it is very hard to concentrate on any one element. One’s imagination is buffeted from one aspect to another but with each passing second awe grows and grows. Do not listen whilst in the company of anyone else as you might look a bit of an idiot with mouth open wide in amazement staring at your hi-fi in disbelief. This track will remain with me forever. Next time Graham appears on Ashley’s show I hope he takes it with him. The other four tracks on the album are also superb. On ‘Magic Garden’ relaxed synth pads give way to a rhythmic sequence which becomes heavier and heavier. Chants can be heard over the top as the sequence shifts and really kicks. The underlying synth textures also work perfectly. At times it reminded me of some of the more rhythmic moments from Paul Haslinger’s ‘World Without Rules’, especially in the way that things start calmly and end up becoming insanely out of control but in such a wonderful way. ‘Freak Street’ has an hilarious start with a waiter reading out the contents of his menu, each item coming with Garlic Bread! When the track gets under way a quirky rhythm, ideal for a summers day, is used to provide the main structure with pleasant melodies weaving around it. A real foot tapper. ‘Avatar’s Dream’ is again rhythmic but more complex and mysterious than the previous track. The effect created is very hypnotic and rather psychedelic. Another stunner. ‘Beyond’ is a rather spacey affair, wonderfully descriptive but with a gentle, restrained, chugging rhythm. An amazing album, just programme out the first and last tracks. (DL)

Mind Over Matter - Colours of Life

Artist: Mind Over Matter
P: 1988 / 2008

Because of the birth of my son, the often quoted "Wonder of Life" revealed itself to me in its toll meaning and profoundness and this did not leave my music untouched. The Colours of Life attempts to build a musical bridge from birth to death, from joy to sadness, from carefree moments to mystical depths. May my new songs give you as much pleasures as I experienced during the making of this album.

Mind Over Matter - In Search of Eternity

Artist: Mind Over Matter
P:
1992
With a 22-minute, five-part opener that sounds in parts like Michael Shrieve's "Transfer Station Blue," and symphonic rock elements that recall Jarre, Vangelis and other contemporary composers, the group known as Mind over Matter have found a potent formula to bring their musical influences to life. A "Bolero"-like riff is heard on "Pilgrims of Eternity," again with rock motifs readily at hand.
Mind over Matter is the brainchild of Klaus Hoffman-Hoock, who plays crystalline guitar and all the instruments besides the guest appearances by Patrick Kosmos and a few others. There are Tibetan elements like those used by David Parsons, as well as song titles derivative of the "top of the world," and some spacey tracks that are closer to earlier releases from Mind over Matter.

Mind Over Matter - Palace of the Winds

Artist: Mind Over Matter
P: 1995

The four new tracks and the remixed "Air India" were finally released in 1995 on what is considered to be one of the greatest albums of Mind over Matter, "Palace of the Winds" (IC 2243-2). The album has a beautiful cover of a Tibetan ritual and even features three bonus tracks: an edited version of "Shangri-La", a live-track by M.O.R.E. recorded in Nijmegen in November 1993 ("Himalaya") and a surprising electronic piece from 1976 named after Tibet ("Roof of the World"). Most of the new album was featured during five concerts in Sonsbeck-Hamb and Erkrath in September and November 1995. Klaus also found the time to play sitar on the album "The House of S. Phrenia" by the great German band Solar Project and to release another older track, the high-speed electronic masterpiece "Rohan Rider" from 1980. This highly recommended short track, based on the works of J.R.R. Tolkien.

Mind Over Matter - Under the Stars

Artist: Mind Over Matter
P: 2000

The performances of February 1999 were so excellent, that it would have been a shame not to release anything from these concerts. Thankfully Klaus decided to release a second live album by Mind over Matter in 2000. "Under the Stars" (IC 87 2345-2) included four of the tracks of the stunning Erkrath-shows, albeit under slightly different titles (like "A Night in Mogul's Garden" and "Mellow Kathmandu"). Two other tracks from other concerts (featuring Michael Grüterich and Stephen Parsick) were added to the album: "La Vie (The Dance of Life)" and "The world of Koto".

  • Mellotron – Klaus Hoffmann-Hoock
  • Synthesizer [Vintage] – Stephen Parsick (tracks: 5)
