Artists: Ashra
P: 1998
Recorded at February 1997, Osaka and Tokyo, Japan.
Performed by Manuel Göttsching, Lutz Ulbrich, Harald Grosskopf and Steve Baltes.
This double CD set contains remastered versions of the original CDs @shra and @shra Vol. 2
Composed largely by Manuel Göttsching, both serve as diverse, hypnotic breaks from the grind of standard progressive. It’s the kind of music that Robert Fripp has made in his best moments, a cross pollination of the dance beat days of Discipline-era Crimson and the mournful but compelling lines that have graced his best soundscape work. But these discs stand on their own, far above and beyond a number of releases that are presented as bold and imaginative works but prove to be only so in the minds of marketing executives. There’s an other-worldly atmosphere here, a kind of laid-back, late-night charm that leaves you in a pleasantly dumbfounded state of mind as the four members of the ensemble (Göttsching, Lutz Ulbrich, Harald Grosskopf and Steve Baltes) weave jazz and prog and chill out-inspired webs.

Ashra - New Age of Earth

Artists: Manuel Goettsching
P: 1977 / 1990
The first album for Virgin was New Age of Earth, an album that since became a classic. Although it is credited under the group name ASHRA, New Age of Earth is actually performed by Manuel Göttsching alone. Relying more on synthesizers than his usual guitar, Göttsching created four richly-textured compositions that are both intriguing and stimulating. It is no doubt that New Age of Earth is Manuel Göttsching and Ashra's finest album. In all honesty, no music collection should be without ASHRA's New Age of Earth.

Ashra - Tropical Heat

Artists: Ashra
P: 1991
This one is more modern than usual. If you like Bella Alliance, just add a little more tempo and that is how this CD sounds. Unusual Ashra, but still nice. Catchy melodies and drums by Harald Grosskopf, offers all you wish. Ashra from a different side.

Ashra - Walkin' the Desert

Artists: Ashra
P: 1989
This time ASHRA experiments with the complexity of the concentrated use of certain instruments per song, as in using only two keyboards for one song, only six voices for another, or only 12 samples for another. The powerful result is a startling, yet faintly familar sound made up of arid keyboards, charming crystalline sequences and finally, the resounding bent-sustain guitar notes that ASHRA fans have grown to worship. [...] More than simply satisfying, this release is a breathtaking growth for the band, expanding the group's root talent into new regions.

Manuel Goettsching - Dream + Desire

Artist: Manuel Göttsching
P: 1977 / 1991
Dream & Desire belongs more with the Virgin Years era. It's not easy to relate it to New Age of Earth or Blackouts, since is has its own unique atmosphere. The compositions on D&D is Manuel in his most sublime and contemplative style, words that could describe it: flowing, moody, gentle, peaceful, comforting. It lacks the agressiveness of Blackouts or Belle Alliance, it's way too gentle, but that's what makes this CD so special: take the best pieceful moments in New Age, and then multiply it by a 100, that's how Dream And Desire feels.

Manuel Goettsching - Inventions for Electric Guitar (Remastered)

Artist: Manuel Göttsching
P: 1974 / 2011

This is the new remastered version by Manuel Goettsching of the classic release.
No keyboards just the magic of Gottchings electric guitar, you can hear thousands of sounds from his 6 string gadget and unbelievably succesful. Even the guitar sequencers are pulsating. If you think these are just tape loops and sounds of like an electric saw that is a Fripp trademark, well you are mistaken, this is like Baumann and Schmoelling Tangerine Dream- heavy, angry and rocking.

Manuel Goettsching - Live at MT. Fuji

Artist: Manuel Göttsching
P: 2007

Even if some titles may sound familiar, they are not what you know. Manuel arranged them in a totally new way.
The album opens with "Sunrain" which was originally from the 1976 classic "New Age of Earth". The familiar hypnotic sequencer pattern is already in place however on this new version, Manuel takes it in a slightly different direction and extends the piece to nearly 15-minutes.
"Saint and Sinner" is a more recent piece which was originally heard on the 2004 release "Concert For Murnau". This laid back piece is taken a step up from its studio counterpart as Manuel adds a bluesy Clapton-esque guitar lead that wasn't there before.
"Trunky Groove" is a brand new piece composed for this concert and is a showcase for the psychedelic music style that was the norm for Manuel back in his very early days in Ash Ra Tempel. A techno-style rhythm is accompanied by a long drone and intense orchestrations before giving way to an effects-drenched guitar solo.
"Die Mulde" is a 20-minute excerpt from Manuel's long-form 1997 piece of the same name. It begins with the "Die Spiegel" section of the piece and shifts into the closing "Zerfluss" movement. As with "Saint and Sinner", Manuel adds a guitar lead which wasn't in the original version.
Finally, to close the album, we have yet another arrangement of the classic "Shuttlecock" which originally is from the 1978 masterwork "Blackouts". The arrangement is similar to the 1976 live version that appeared on the 1996 CD set "The Private Tapes" but definitely has a modern twist. Manuel's guitar playing is up front and center here and is stellar - almost like taking a trip back to the mid 70s.

Various Artists - A Brief History of Ambient Vol. 1

Artist: TD, Ashra, Eno, Froese u.a.
P: 1993
What you get is a fairly decent ambient selection from Virgin's rich and varied back catalogue from the 70's, 80's and 90's. Some of it naturally sounds a little dated, but it is a history lesson so what do you expect.
