Otarion - Creator

Artist: Otarion
P: 2002
It takes the best elements from retro, modern rhythmic, atmospheric- everything really and puts them together to form one of the most enjoyable albums I have ever heard. 'Evolution' was a triumph but on 'Creator' the sound is even bigger, the hooks even stronger and there is so much of that mysterious factor that is hard to put your finger on that just makes you want to shout out in pleasure. Even the artwork created by Marcus Hildebrandt and put together by Gary Hall is stunning. Tinkling cosmic effects give way to the sound of the wind and big thunder claps. From this dramatic beginning 'Places Without Traces' settles down to some gorgeous tranquil pads with faint melodic detail over the top. By any measure this is beautiful stuff. Then in comes the most awesome combination of sequences, rhythms and above all stunning lead lines, each melodic perfection.

Otarion - Decide

Tracks that change the style during itself. Sometime a mellow track ends up in Prog-Rock. But in the end all tracks are pure electronic in the Otarion style we love and you will love it too.

Otarion - Evolution

Artist: Otarion
P: 2000
This is filled with majestic flowing soundscapes that occasionally border on eerie, sequencer rhythms, and spacey synth textures.
This evolutionary journey begins with Twilight and tolling cathedral bells, setting the serious tenor from the outset. A quick look at the cover with its' reflective humanoids and floating mountains shows that the evolution referred to here is not the same as our own planet. The sleeve note describes it this way: "Evolution is a journey. It starts from out of nothing with the very first breath of eternity and it ends up far beyond imagination." This number progresses along dark ambient lines until it fades into the sound of ocean waves.
The waves roll into the second track, Innovation, which begins to pick up the pace with the first drum sounds and sequence. The tracks tend to flow into one another, often (almost too often) through the vehicle of the waves though other tonal links are used such as the jet rush linking us to track five.
The fifth track, Fusions, brings in some interesting guitar work over a synth background that reminds me, surprisingly, of Pink Floyd. It's not that his style is so much like David Gilmour, rather the tone of the guitar brings the comparison to mind. This, interestingly, is followed by several minutes of calmer mellower lines until the storm comes up. Mixed into the "rain" is a very ominous organ sound that introduces us once again to the guitar.
The genre overall is very much "Berlin School meets ambient", and the music is lucid and well done. There are many floating thought evoking tranquil moments that tumble artfully into powerful sequencer passages. Lovers of classic electronica will enjoy this release.

Otarion - Extensive

Artist: Otarion

I listened to a lot of albums over the years. From time to time You listen to that special one, that touches instantly Your heart. The new album "Extensive" from Otarion is such an album. It is full of emotions in different ways. Its euphoric, melancholic, dramatic and in between positivly relaxing. Any note, any song and any instrument is perfectly arranged. All is combined to one piece. Natural instruments dominate, in between there are maintaining hints from electronic genres plus some sacral elements. Dark and mysterious soundscapes hold everything together. "Extensive" is 100% instrumental. Without one word it tells an exciting story of emotions. Of life. Of craving.
The music is deliverd in a bombstic and high dynamic sound. "Extensive" is a perfect soundtrack for mind and soul.

Otarion - Faces of the Night

Artist: Otarion
P: 2004
The album takes us through a restless dream filled night. We begin 'Nightfall' with eerie metallic shimmers, deep bass rumbles and haunting but also quite ethereal wordless vocal touches. It's an extremely impressive start out of which rhythms and simply stunning melodies emerge. Beauty and power are mixed together in the perfect combination. The track gains even extra oomph and yet more melodies surge forward one after another seeping into every element in the mix. Turn up the volume and let rip. I found myself playing air keyboard like a crazy thing and simply couldn't keep my feet still. 'Mylene' starts with a beautiful tender lead line but it isn't long before another excellent rhythm starts to build and build then pow in come some more blistering lead lines, all top notch. The quality of the opener was something to behold but this number takes us to even greater realms. The pace subsides from time to time to make way for the tenderest tinkling little melodic interludes but this makes the power sections even more awesome when they return! It's as if a disturbed sleep is calmed by pleasant memories; a technique which is used frequently throughout the album. 'Tower of Darkness' starts with an explosion of thunder then howling winds and deep dark drones creating a most ominous atmosphere. In the second minute we get a lovely combination of rhythms and menacing lead line, almost snarling from the speakers. A minute later the mood lightens a little. A new melody banishes the darkness but without losing anything of the surging power, just taking it in a new direction. 'Sleepwalker' also has many moods but in general, in the first half is more tranquil, even melancholy with some lovely use of mellotron. In the second half there is a very seventies sounding sequence over which bass stabs give even more energy. We finish in calmer mode with, as before, a hint of sadness. 'Dreamcatcher' has a slow deep bass backing, like funeral drums from the depths of hell. This is menacing stuff! There are more of those wonderful little interludes as angelic vocals break in, lightening the mood, to suddenly vanish letting the darkness return. The whole feel of the track changes in the fourth minute as the pace quickens but there is still an air of unease. With Rainer's music there is no chance of getting bored, the tracks are constantly moving from one exciting or beautiful moment to the next. 'Picture of Dreams' has an appropriately serene restful opening but of course Rainer can't keep it like this for long as powerful symphonic strings add oomph. We then get a rather Vangelis inspired section (even TD's 'Legend' came to mind) which takes us to a close. A bright tinkling sequence and contrasting dark drones get 'Nightmare' underway. The tension builds, oh so slowly, but surely. The track is full of attitude, gradually winding itself up. I couldn't believe it wasn't going to explode but instead gently subsides leading into 'Dancing in the Silver'. A gentle sequence comes in like a soft rain. Another beefier sequence joins it then we are on another roller coaster ride of fantastic drums, pulsations and blistering lead solos. Moments of tenderness can also be found however (something of an Otarion trademark) even amongst the most exciting maelstrom. It is what makes his music so effective, standing head and shoulders above almost everyone else. 'Morning Twilight' has just the sort of calm relaxing introduction you might expect- quite beautiful in fact, but you guessed it, a low pulse starts to throb, drums roll then layer after layer of pulsations move into formation. The backing fights back, swelling to almost spiritual proportions. Beauty and the beast in perfect harmony, wonderful melodies weaving round it all creating as near perfect a finish to an album I can imagine Every track here is perfection, there is no weak link.

Otarion - Genius

Artist: Otarion
P: 2014
Otarion, takes us to the early Roman cultures as a theme. He creates great soundscapes that are build by sequencers, sometimes in front, sometimes in the background, a musical voltage will be enriched by cinematic sounds and melodies. A CD to listen properly, preferably with headphones, because this happens a lot. In ancient Roman religion, the genius was the individual instance of a general divine nature that is present in every individual person, place, or thing. The rational powers and abilities of every human being were attributed to their soul, which was a genius. Each individual place had a genius (genius loci) and so did powerful objects, such as volcanoes. Some say, You can find the spirit of Genius within this music. Enjoy.

As with my last TWO albums, Lógos is dedicated to a biblical theme. With Lógos (the word) John describes Jesus Christ in his gospel, the Son of God, who came into this world as a man. His incredible path, pure grace of love for people I implemented this in my music in 12 compositions. Feel the emotions and enjoy listening to my music.
