Schmoelling, Johannes

In the middle of 1979 he was engaged by Edgar Froese directly at the theatre. Edgar Froese – founder of the electronic band TANGERINE DREAM – endeavoured to reform the band again in the classic lineup of three keyboard players. Schmoelling stayed with TANGERINE DREAM until 1985. In the year 2000, Johannes Schmoelling succeeded in founding his own record label, a long time ambition, which came true. For the initial release on Viktoriapark Records, the album "White Out", which had been deleted for 10 years, was released. Added as a bonus track to the 1990-version was a remix by the young artists Ulrich Schnauss and Robert Wässer.

Johannes Schmoelling - Instant City

Artist: Johannes Schmoelling
P: 2006

This is a truly masterpiece! Very nice sequences in this album. Every track is unique, but don't expect any TD sound here, at leat not from the 80's era. This is a more modern sounding experience, but with a slight touch from Schmoelling's earlier albums, like Wuivend Riet. Johannes has an amazing ability to create liquid-like melodic themes that literally melt down and return as some of the most adventurous, quirky sequential riffs and synthetic collages. At times surreal, others deeply emotive, the alchemy of various elements Johannes creates sonically results in an incredible listening experience that displays the myriad realm of possibilities when a true artist explores the full spectrum of electronic music.

Here the glorious times of 1980-1985 are picked up again and new motifs are recorded on the original instruments of the time. So the time comes alive again in the head of the listener, with new titles that could have come from that time. TOP!

Johannes Schmoelling - Songs No Words

Artist: Johannes Schmoelling
P: 1995

Certain sections of the music in "Songs No Words", which is Schmoellings 4th solo album, are meant to be a mixture of two music styles. The classical-romantic music of the 19th century and the popular electronic music of the present. Pieces such as "Hymnus" or "Funeral March" are examples of this. "It is my attempt to combine traditional instruments such as the piano, the clarinet or string instruments, including traditional melodies and harmonies, with electronically generated sounds from synthesizers and samplers, and modern rhythms." This resulted in new stereophonic sounds. Virtual stereophonics produced by the electronic music are combined to the known and experienced stereophonics of traditional music (the so called, "classical music"). In turn, the sound achieves more depth and scope, stereophonics and composition become equal partners during the production of music." (Johannes Schmoelling) The title of the CD "Songs No Words", and the individual tracks, are based on the style from the piano album "Lieder ohne Worte" by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, published 1834.
Recorded at Rietstudio, Berlin, Germany between 1992-1994 by Johannes Schmoelling

Johannes Schmoelling - White Out

Artist: Johannes Schmoelling
P: 2000

I worked with short sound samples from Axel Engstfeld's documentary film "Antarctica project" on the tracks "white out", "the big nail" and "a great continent". In "a great continent" I used excerpts from Engstfeld's interview with Michael T. Halbouty, chairman of the Antarctica treaty. I would like to thank Axel Engstfeld for his permission, to use special material from his film. This film and Martin Burckhardt's radio play "bis ans ende der welt" have given me inspiration and musical ideas.

Johannes Schmoelling - Wuivend Riet

Artist: Johannes Schmoelling
P: 1987

This is Johannes Schmoelling's first and, overall, best solo album. The first four tracks are lofty compositions with ethereal synth waves, piano-driven melodies, and slow-motion rhythms. "Zeit" with its tension-filled atmosphere and relentlessly ticking clocks is the only track reminiscent of TD.
"Wuivend Riet part 1" is a funny soundscape with samples frogs and other natural sounds.
"Part 2" is an interesting, droning nightmare, but uncomfortable and hardly accessible.
All in all, a surprisingly diverse album which transcends the borders of conventional synth-based music. For advanced listeners.

S-A-W (Schmoelling -Ader - Waters - Merz) - Hydragate
Artist: Johannes Schmoelling, Kurt Ader, Rob Waters & Andreas Merz
P: 2023
ON STOCK NOW!

S.A.W. manage to deliver a mixture of ambient, electronica and cinematic sound collages with their second album "Hydragate". On the 10-track album, the quartet traverses different emotional energies from epic power to lightness. On "Surface Illusions" and "Hydragate" you can hear composed melody lines as you already knew them from Johannes Schmoelling from his time with Tangerine Dream. Also in "Whispering Colours" one recognizes the dexterity to program sequences that take the listener into a trance-like world of their own. On "Sphere" you discover a filigree sound design - no wonder, because band member Kurt Ader is not only a composer, but also a sound designer for various leading synthesizer manufacturers and programs sounds for well-known bands and artists such as e.g. B. Nightwish, Dream Theater or Michael Cretu. "Inside Out" impresses with the use of alienated ethnic sounds and on "Master Of Time" you can hear echoes of the electronic music of the 1970s as they meet the dark ambient sounds of the present time. Even very rhythmic titles are missing on the new S.A.W. album not, e.g. B. can be heard on "Distant Memories" and "Stop And Go". "Hydragate" was developed in various studios in Munich, Berlin, Mannheim and Hitzacker, using various samples, analogue drum machines, modular and digital synthesizers.
