Weiss, Tomas

Born near Frankfurt am Main (Germany) , Tomas Weiss early built a lovely relationship to all kinds of music. From 1997 to 2004 he played as DJ in different regionals clubs and radio stations. From 1997-2005 he owned the vinyl store "el culto" - a shop for high quality electronic music.
His career as a music producer started in 2001. He has also formed the global network "el culto" on the internet - a global and idealistic portal for all kinds of art. Supported artists are: Klaus Wiese, Mathias Grassow, Felyon, Marie Thévenet, Amtana, Circulum musicum, LichterSchatten and many others - in various kinds of arts too. His current project is "Amtana" - a collaboration with different artists. Nearly all compositions are written, arranged and produced by Tomas Weiss. With this project only high quality music (in the fields of Pop, Rock, Classic or Club) should be released - with a deeper meaning for a wide range of people. In the near future Tomas also plan to release a series of Sampling-CD´s (Atmos, Drones, Pads, Loops) for producers.
Anthony Paul Kerby + Thomas Weiss - Appearances

Artist: Anthony Paul Kerby + Thomas Weiss
P: 2011

"Appearances" by Tomas Weiss and Anthony Paul Kerby is their second collaborative composition, building upon the solid foundations of "Distant Shadows" from Spring 2011. This new work forms an uninterrupted story of images and visions varying from bright expansive spaces to mysterious dark grounds, wind-swept caverns, and pools of pure emotional depth. "Appearances" is an immersive, expressive ambient release that is both lush and timeless, and will certainly reward enthusiasts of deep listening. Ambient music is not so much an imitation of reality as a way of conjuring alternate realities from its sonic layers, its motions, its moods, and from the listener who hears and is always alone but who temporarily lives within these shifting veils and breathing torrents of sound, and whose consciousness becomes engulfed, willingly giving itself over for a short while to the unspoken story of these musical phantoms, these metaphysical possibilities... these appearances.

"Distant Shadows" is delicate drone music and not only a deep listening experience, but also a highly relaxing one too!!! It's hard to exactly distinguish what Anthony and what Tomas brought to the table, but I don't care about this, because whatever it was, I liked it. Well done teamwork, Anthony & Tomas, and a very promising overture." (Richard Gürtler)

As with their previous two collaborations, Revelation is a masterpiece of complex and lush ambient soundscapes. Both majestic and yet deeply intimate, this is music that you can return to again and again.

Mathias Grassow + Thomas Weiss - Conscience

Artist: Mathias Grassow + Thomas Weiss
P: 2006
Conscience, their first collaboration, is about as close to perfect ambient minimalism as it gets. This disc starts with a low drone that envelops listeners with its overtone qualities and subtle pitch changes. Mathias and Thomas build layers of atmospheres upon and from this drone. The atmospheres are gentle, cerebral and serene and they control the pace - slow, so slow as to approach standing still.
That is the unique characteristic of this set. The music evolves slowly and deliberately. It seems to hang forever in listeners neuropathways as it triggers serotonin and neuroprenephrin activity. On the surface, the overtones have no substance or purpose. As they enter the biosonic feedback device (read: brain), they define themselves anew and allow listeners to float at will.
For such a low-key soundscape, this CD evokes and promotes lots of activity -all of intangible and unquantifiable. While it might be impossible to dance to this music, it is just as impossible to prevent one's insides from dancing to it. The music infects the mind, the heart, the spirit and the soul with its positive energy.
With this release, Thomas leaps to the forefront of the ambient community. Association with a master qualifies as a major endorsement. Mathias, with more than 100 releases in his discography, qualifies as a master. This CD is as good an introduction as any for his music. It comes with the highest recommendation.

Mathias Grassow + Tomas Weiss - Aestrata

Artist: Mathias Grassow + Tomas Weiss
P: 2010
Tomas Weiss and Mathis Grassow are known individually and as collaborators for their warm, beatless, often green ambient combining state-of-the-art electronics with instruments of non-Western origin. Here, they have crafted a dark ambient album in the best sense of the term, insofar as it creates and upholds a feeling of uncertainty and of being somewhere you could otherwise never visit. No chance of anything green growing here because there is no "here" here. No foothold. Instead of drifting, "Aestrata" hurtles. A rush of cold wind never relents, but riding the chinook is a deceptively-shifting kaleidoscope of monochromatic drones. There are many shades in the grey scale...
Recommended for headphone listening while travelling through some wormhold between galaxies.( Stephen Fuitman )

Mathias Grassow + Tomas Weiss - Electric Angels

Artist: Mathias Grassow + Tomas Weiss
P: 2010
Grassow & Weiss join up for another spacious adventure, showcasing an hour of  high quality Ambient with an amazing array of subtle and intricate detail.Although the music evolves slowly and deliberately, it's probably one of  their most varied albums up to date. Ranging from dynamic and engaging dronescapes to razor-sharp produced textures, flavored with a touch of early Space Music.
Electric angels is a fusion of heart and mind. Leaving the industrial age of the 19th century and the information age of the 20th century behind, the 21st century opens the door to the age of consciousness. Electric angels is a musical representation of this passage from the old era into a new one. Limited CD in special two panel digi file.

Mathias Grassow + Tomas Weiss - Quiet Calling III

Artist: Mathias Grassow + Tomas Weiss
P: 2011
Quiet calling 3, released in an Eco Digipak, is the final chapter of this trilogy. Rising and falling tonal layers fuse into a continuum that seems to lift the listener out of perceptual linearity, expanding space into a perpetual metamorphosis of form. Within its minimalist structure, Chapter 3 weaves intricate complexities that create a weightless veil of vibrating resonance. An amplified silence allows for intimate reflection, evoking both deep peace and a heightened awareness. In the end, the listener returns to the source from which these sounds were born - silence.

Quiet Calling IV - a mindbending continuation of this series. Deeper than ever before, the album features slow hypnotic movements with harmonic, morphing structures with a great sensation of space. We highly recommend using a good pair of headphones for listening to all the samples, to fully appreciate the extraordinary depths and warm feeling of this new album.

Nautic Depth - North Passage

Artist: Nautic Depth
P: 2008
"Norvegia" opens the disc, a low drone bed with occasional sounds overtop, a very beautiful atmospheric piece that brings to mind the Nostromo disc by Sleep Research Facility. Very dark and somewhat ominous, "Norvegia" is inspired in its approach at conjuring a dark atmosphere. The transition into "Arkona" is nearly imperceptible, but as time passes it becomes clear that new elemements have been added to the sound. A haunting call, a deeper drone, we've clearly entered new territory but it all feels to be part of the same journey, a logical step in our travels. "Mercury" flows along in a similar vein, though there is a slightly denser feeling of higher tones and sounds, a slightly more "active" feel to the track. "Astrolabe" shifts the sound considerably, a sudden change to a warmer steady drone which comes across as somehow more inviting. It's an interesting study in aural dynamics, the way the listener hears different elements to the tone as it progresses, nuances in sound that are subtle at first but gain a greater significance as time goes on. After the relative warmth of the previous track, "Fram" brings us back to a particularly cold and dark space, where the feeling of isolation becomes particularly obvious. Other tones are heard on the edges of the soundfield, but nothing so clear that it can be identified or recognized, adding an element of fear to the proceedings that benefits the listening experience. "Aurora" closes the disc, once again returning to a sparse and simple drone, steady, dark, ominous. It ends slowly, quietly, gradually, done in such a way that you don't even notice it's over until it's done.

It should come as no surprise that a collaboration between such notable talents has resulted in such a wonderful disc. I wholeheartedly recommend "North Passage" by Nautic Depths as an excellent release that bears further investigation.

Tomas Weiss + Nuur - Polaris

Artist: Tomas Weiss & Nuur
P: 2015
"Nuur" is the Mongolian word for "lake" and this project has its roots in regional myths about the many deep lakes in that country. Focusing on Dark Ambient, this project explores vast Atmospheres and dense sound sculptures. By merging elements from other genres, a broad range of variations is explored. "Nuur" has also been inspired by the extreme temperature fluctuations between the Mongolian winter and summer (from -58 to +47 degrees Celsius), adding another dimension to the music.

Tomas Weiss - Dato

Artist: Tomas Weiss
P: 2010
LTD
Know for his collaborations with Mathias Grassow and The Circular Ruins, Dato is Tomas’ first release under his own name. With this album he proves to be one of the leading names when it comes to top notch produced cinematic soundscapes. Finely crafted from beginning to end with a fascinating blend of traditional and contemporary sounds. As Tomas says : "DATO means to me to live musically in the now. The past can be a trigger or an inspiration but should never be reproduced or repeated just to be on the safe side. As much as we live in the present, I believe that as artists we should use all the great technical tools we have today at our disposal. Therefore in DATO I integrate all my current ideas in music, sounds, structure as well as my experiences and influences. The key to DATO is to combine not separate"

Tomas Weiss - Zeitlos

Artist: Tomas Weiss
P: 2013
"Zeitlos" is a pure ambient album by Tomas Weiss, following several collaborations and audio engineering / mastering roles on other artists' albums over the past 7 years. Almost a year in progress, this album is an extension of Weiss' characteristic sound, which you may recognize in all the previous projects he has been involved in. From minimal but highly emotional drones to rich walls of sound, each title consists of subtle movements embedded in a colourful bed of several tone layers. Tomas' aim was to create an exceptionally warm-sounding album you can repeatedly listen to in situations requiring a "mental calmness" without cold / noisy tones or a harsh overall sound. The album was recorded, mixed and mastered with analog equipment to retain the unique sound delivered by non-digital hardware. Feeling "Zeitlos" ("Timeless" in English) is doubtlessly a desirable state of mind for most if not all of us when searching for personal rest... and that's what the album is made for!

Various Artists - Class XX

Artist: Various Artists
P: 2010
ClassXX is a new label for contemporary and expanding music to touch, explore and stretch the classical genre and they kick off with a fantastic and varied set of modern classical ambient/electronica by artists such as Bruno Sanfilippo, Mathias Grassow, Chris Edwards, Tomas Weiss and many others.
This is a frustratingly schizophrenic compilation. Out of Line is a perfectly appropriate title, because to these ears, there is almost a clock-like rhythm swinging from the pompous and over-wrought to the restrained and affecting.
The label´s stated intent is to explore the possibilities of so-called "neo-classical" music, brooking "no rules, no boundaries, no restrictions". But the anticipated "crossover" sounds more like a collision.
For some artists seriously over-egg the pudding, while others are more thrifty with their ingredients. I have no idea what feelings Chris Edwards harbours for Bucharest, but his opener dedicated to the city is so saccharine that he must have fallen goofily head over heels in love there. The palate is however immediately cleansed by ”Lost”, a tart, toy-like chamber piece by Eric Schwartz that sounds a bit like a music box trying to remember the tune ”Greensleeves”. Michael Travlos´ ”Indigo” is a angular, modernist collage of whispers, plucked strings, and turgid cello. Rüdiger Gleisburg´s string quartet ”Unfulfilled Longing” is so effective in rousing real emotion that it indeed leaves you unfulfilled by its mere two hundred and five seconds.
And so we continue to be cast between moods and styles: fractured spoken word, tongue-clucking and erratic piano by Thamnos (a duo featuring compiler Tomas Weiss) is followed directly by the über-symphonics of Nostalgia (another Weiss side project), which gives way to Maik Sever´s ”Division”. A lone piano being caressed by a slight breeze of strings, it is a perfect example of how one can compose modern Romantic music without resorting to melodrama.
However, the absolute revelation of the album is the cello duet between Donja Djember and Insa Schirmer (who together made a significant contribution to Hauschka´s excellent album ”Ferndorf”). It is spectacularly performed.
And after continued see-sawing, the album anomaly: the stately, weightless and electronic ”Silence Calls” by Weiss and Mathias Grassow, at nearly thirteen minutes also by far the longest track.
"El Ceibo" by Bruno Sanfilippo makes for a lovely epilogue and final impression.
