Himekami

After a successful hit in Japan keyboard artist Yoshiaki Hoshi changed his performance name to Himekami (姫神) in 1980, sometimes in collaboration with his wife Etsuko. Their music has much in common with Kitaro - a mix between traditional Japanese and more modern, popular styles - but less stable in 'quality'. Although they made also over 40 albums, compilations included, many of them never got released outside Japan.
Yoshiaki Hoshi died in 2004, though the group has been continued by his son Yoshiki.

Himekami - Journey to Zipangu

Artist: Himekami
P: 1993
The title "Journey to Zipangu" just means "Journey to Japan Kingdom" or Japan Land. Anyone who read the bio and history of Himekami, would understand that Mr. Yoshiaki Hoshi, the solo composer and performer, had deepest love for his homeland. All of his music was inspired and dedicated to the Jomon civilization from the northeast region of Japan.

Jomon origin - the earliest Japanese culture combined both northeast and southwest civilization. Hoshi has been working hard to elevate Jomon culture into the mainstream just as Yayoi civilization amount Japanese, enable people to pay the same respect and appreciation to Jomon as himself. In his music, the culture he represent has always been regarded as barbaric, primitive, dull side of Japanese culture; however, the northeast region was the birthplace of Japan's most peaceful period in the history.

Himekami - Kaze No Jyomon

Artist: Himekami
P: 1996
Kaze no Johmon is a wonderful CD for anyone who has a love of Japanese style music, be it modern or ancient. Though the tracks on the disk tend to have mostly archaic Japanese overtones, some contemporary undercurrents are in evidence. An excellent CD to listen to whilist relaxing, or looking for a bit of inspiration to get that new art project underway, Kaze no Johmon is a unique addition to any collection. The tracks contain ethereal melodies with modern, almost techno accents. Many instruments and effects are used. In one track you may be able to hear violins, vocals, a synthesized melody, and a cello all together. It blends to create a wonderful effect which is futuristic, yet age-old at the same time.

Himekami - Moonwater

Artist: Himekami
P: 1989
There is quite a range of sounds from your typical New Age elevator music, not an insult, to material that sounds like something from Kitaro. This album is the later. I happen to like the delicate flowing music made famous in the Silk Road series and, thus, find this particular Himekami offering to be beautiful. It is the ultimate music to relax with as you flow along like the stars in the Milky Way or a slowly moving line of clouds across the blue sky. There is a sharp crispness to the images but, unlike some of the really spacy type material out there, there is not a feeling of coldness or solitude.
