Corbacho, Max

He comes from Spain. His musical trajectory began, after making guitar studies, in local rock bands and, after some years like electric guitar player, slowly become interested in electronic music. First with legendary bands like Tangerine Dream or musics such as Richard Burmer and Vangelis. Later, his influences include artists such as Brian Eno, Robert Rich, Steve Roach, Vidna Obmana, Alio Die, Michael Stearns. In 1999 his first work, "Vestiges" was produced.

Max Corbacho + Bruno Sanfilippo - Indalo

Artist: Max Corbacho + Bruno Sanfilippo
P: 2003
INDALO is the first collaboration work between both artists, inspired by a join trip to the South of Spain. The whole CD represents an exploratory excursion to atmospheric ambient textures of a dark and dreamy beauty, a deep kind of ritual echoes. Structurally this CD presents seven soundscapes, carefully placed, starting with some rythmic movements, from the walking groove of "Indalo", driving the listener over the atmospheric synth lines, to the more relaxed and introspective realms of the following tracks. The textures are made based on a mix of field recordings, computer manipulated samples and spontaneously created tracks on synths and samplers. Strange far-away noises, swirling windy ancient echoes, subtle percussions, distant acoustic sounds and undulating synthlayers conform this work, all selected and presented in a deep, full of emotion, organic experience.

Max Corbacho - Ars Lucis

Artist: Max Corbacho
P: 2009 / 2019
Max Corbacho returns with a long-form disc of his signature lighter-than-air drifts in Ars Lucis. Corbacho’s constructs float in higher registers, airy choral sounds occasionally lifted by a bass rumble updraft. This is, as the cover art suggests, a soundtrack for watching light filter through stained glass in a sacred space. Notes spiral angelically upwards in a slow dance, gracefully filling the air. There’s a delicate feel to the work here, as though a single touch would shatter it into glistening fragments. Ars Lucis is a disc that truly comes into its own when played as a low-volume loop, and it’s an ideal meditation CD. Although split into seven tracks, it plays as a seamless flow. The music here clearly resonates with Steve Roach’s influence on Corbacho’s style—I hear it in the slow-motion layering, the depth and soft elegance of sound that calls to mind the Quiet Music series. (I also hear hushed memories of Giles Reaves’ Sacred Space.) But influences aside, this is true-to-form Corbacho, with all the gentle beauty he’s exhibited in his past releases. It’s a welcome return from a talented ambient artist.

Max Corbacho - Echo of Longing

Artist: Max Corbacho
P: 2019
Spanish producer Max Corbacho has been creating atmospheric ambient music for over 20 years now and his newest ‘Echo and Longing’, just might be his most out of this world creation yet. The title song welcomes you to the beginning of an unknown and other-worldly vast space. A cavernous space that is as majestic as it is mysterious. Like the title of the song and album it has long droning tones developing effortlessly in heavy echo. Eerie, awe-inspiring and almost too powerful to describe, this track is a language almost as if the universe’s secrets are being revealed to man. Expansive is an understatement. One of the most moving audio examples of creating an enviorment I have heard and the last few minutes are breathtaking. ‘Embryo of Drones’ continues the wonderment thru this new world with a bit more crystalized and faster moving tones. Ever-evolving and with a more complex language this track makes a nice spatial bridge to the finally. ‘The Noble Beyond’ makes the odyssey all worthwhile as you enter its paradise. Dynamic and immersive it allows you to wander around its garden of sounds that surround you without fear. You are rewarded in a beautiful and an angelic manner as the song moves thru to more found peacefulness as it slowly fades. A well paced, bridged and complete release, Max Corbacho continues to create landscapes and journeys worth revisiting again and again. Max is one of the best at this craft.

Max Corbacho - Far Beyond the Immobile Point

P: 2000
The music is a slow landscape of organic, waving, and mysterious atmospheres. Max Corbacho completes some ways begun in Vestiges, but of an absolutely atmospheric form. Across all four tracks that compose the album, Corbacho brings the listener to a new state of acoustic perception, inducing a state of semi drowsiness, increased by the down tempo, the sinuous movement of the mysterious sonorous currents and the subtle, fine harmonic architecture, ever mutating and regenerating.Soft coiling and morphing textures, heavy atmospheric textural music for a deep drift into the dimensions of space, time and place.

Max Corbacho - Moontribe

Artist: Max Corbacho
P: 2004
A collection of previously not published tracks, destined to collaboration projects that finally did not see the light, plus two totally new pieces. Moontribe creates an immersive space, where spectral colourzones meet floating tribal-esque pulsing groovescapes. The four first tracks correspond to stage 2000-2001, the tribal character emerges forcefully in "Suntribe", the first piece of the CD, and the energic percussions drive the atmospheric textures also in the next two tracks. Huge growing currents of sound are rising, falling and surrounding. Techno-tribal beats, with mesmerizing sound effects are taking full control of us. The sound here is so powerful, expanding yet warm and elegant. This most beautiful storm we've been in ends somewhere in the deep hidden ancient foggy swamps. The two final pieces were created in the last months of 2003, in them can be appreciated the evolution of Max´s soundscapes. The final cut, "Moontribe", spiral in an entrancing and melancolic synth layered chords over 20 minutes, a vastly, relaxed and amorphous immersive conclussion.

Max Corbacho - Nocturnal Emanations

Artist: Max Corbacho
P: 2004
"Beatless and rhythmic ambient zones full of shadow and the lush densities of night. Night sounds, night birds, crickets, low sonic breezes - the album opens with a strongly environmental sound. This is a rich, liquid smooth world of dark curling colour, oceanic enormity. Tranquil and languid for the most part, yet uneasy shades well up at times, there are desolate spots, lonely and cold, suggestions of ambiguous lifeforms moving somewhere below or off to one side. The organic rhythms lift some tracks into meandering animation, quickening the stillness - but only just.
Nocturnal Emanations is for lovers of sonic scenery, lovers of low light, lovers of ambiguity. This CD will appeal to ambient fans that enjoy an organic sound and powerful atmosphere."

Max Corbacho - Nocturnes

Artist: Max Corbacho
P: 2017
Night, that period of magic time in which shadows blur shapes, colors and along with silence and stillness induces a state of special perception, creating a new universe. Nocturnes is the first chapter of a trilogy where Max Corbacho vanish edges and shapes of sound to introduce the listener to a surreal landscape of ghost textures, blurring the time and projecting a new world, hidden before the sunset. This new collection of sound spaces reflects the emotion felt during several sessions of night photography along the last years. The characteristic elements in the sound depth of Corbacho are firmly present: Dense harmonic layers of synthesizers combined with rich overtones flow freely in time like shadows in a dreamlike, fuzzy blooming of colorist chords and textures. "Nocturnes is the first episode of a trilogy inspired by the long hours lived on many night-time excursions, often photographing the places visited. Over the years I have never lost the excitement and joy of these nocturnal walks. In one of the viewing sessions of these photographs, I came up with the idea of creating a series of albums with these night landscapes as the background theme. Showing the photograph of the place where I have been in the artwork is, as I perceive it, to share with my listeners a complete experience, a way of connecting the music with the place where it was inspired. The most vivid memory of these nights is silence, stillness, the twinkling light of the stars and the sweet fragrance of thyme that impregnates everything in these regions of Aragon in Spain."

Max Corbacho - Nocturnes II

Artist: Max Corbacho
P: 2018
The beauty of magnificently immersing nocturnal landscapes of Aragón region in northeastern Spain is resurrected once more! Max Corbacho, the Spanish driftscaper par excellence has released the second chapter of "Nocturnes" series during April 2018 through his Silentsun imprint. "Nocturnes II" CD is packaged in an attractive glossy 4-panel digipak, exhibiting original cover photographs by Max Corbacho with additional layout work by Michael Rodriguez Pletz. The opening "Celistia" track clocks over 23-minute mark and immediately takes the listener into an awe-inspiring vastness, where undisputable, timelessly gliding and ebbing insignias of its sole purveyor meticulously coalesce with balmily glimmering nightly quietudes and inconspicuously permeating faunal symphonies. A journey through grandiosely barren horizons is fully unfolded, Max Corbacho again unlocks the gates to soulfully fascinating terra incognitas. Indeed, an epic listening experience awaits here! Shorter "Nocturnal Bloom" clandestinely soars into even more expansive grandness, a gracefully colossal realms owned by this Spaniard. It's a pity not even a 4 minutes long ambrosial exploration is gone too fast. But no worries, almost 9-minute "Starlight Grace", as indicated by its title, steals the splendor with all its panoptically prodigious monumentality, free-floating spatial solitariness is exquisitely juxtaposed with surges of titillatingly mindscaping reverberations. Tenaciously monstrous, pure magic!!! "Heart Of The Night" is another rather ephemeral odyssey, yet intensely engrossing, where all hues of organic tapestries persistently amalgamate with voluminously undulating magmatic stratums. "Indigo Sphinxes In Dark Canyon", at 3:10 the shortest venture on the album, tightly keeps breathtaking tension of its predecessor, but an array of ear-bending piquant meridians steals the whole spectacle. I keep on delving deeply into staggeringly perplexing chasmal domains... "Timelapse" returns to relatively calmer terrains, but sonic metamorphosis seems to be unstoppable and surreptitiously nuanced scenario moves into a profoundly delightful monolithic vertex. Then through peaceful diminuendoing closing this spellbindingly transcendental circle. Big applaud, Maestro!!! 20-plus minutes long "Moon Apparition" delicately reveals the genius loci of these arid sceneries, where gracefully meandering panoramas of dronescapes precisely harmonize with genuinely shimmering nocturnal field recordings and transitorily trenchant climaxes. Tranquilly enveloping conclusion! No matter if entering enthrallingly overwhelming skylines, nebulously extraterrestrial spheres, mysteriously labyrinthine inner zones, spectacularly subaqueous depths or majestically monumental architectural masterpieces, Max Corbacho always delivers the very best of his virtuosic soundcarving, a rewardingly abundant momentum of tremendously sophisticated wizardry in sculpting powerfully transporting opuses. With gem like 70-minute "Nocturnes II", but also with "Source Of Present", "Nocturnes" and most especially with recently released "Horizon Matrix" (out since November 30th, 2018), Max Corbacho is triumphantly chasing quintessential milestones such as "Ars Lucis" and "The Ocean Inside". Once again, bravo, Maestro!!!

Max Corbacho - Nocturnes III

Artist: Max Corbacho
P: 2021
LTD 200
Nocturnes III closes the trilogy started in 2017 by Max Corbacho, continuing in this new installment the exploration of stillness and primordial, organic themes, through the mystical connection with his synthesizers. Through that physical, intimate, organic and tactile interaction with his fully hardware instruments Max can more deeply convey his sonic world with an incredibly sensitive, deep and detailed touch. For the occasion the artist has resorted to his entire sonic palette based on both analog and digital synthesizers, as well as an elaborate archive of samples and organic atmospheres. A hauntingly surreal soundscape opens the album, gliding quietly across the stages of the mists of time. Altar Of Stillness is an intense and multi-layered textured work that dates back in its creation to the time of the 2003 album "Indalo". This track has been mutating all these years through subtle transformations until it has reached its current form, ready to open this new Corbacho collection. The subtlety of an artist in his creative maturity crystallizes the following tracks as immense unfathomable expanses of sound, from the organically surreal Sleeptime Spores to the infinite mercurial chords of Skywatchers. The feeling of nocturnalness prevails throughout the album but it is a luminous, radiant nocturnal feel, appealing to mystical telluric forces of the night, its mystery and its unfathomable meaning in the human psyche. With the soft and intricate fabric of these sound worlds, Max traces a quiet path in which to immerse ourselves in a unique experience.
As described in the two preceding installments, the inspiration for the Nocturnes trilogy came from Corbacho's night photography featured in the series artwork. In Max's words: "Nocturnes III completes the trilogy begun in 2017. I remember the feeling of excitement and amazement experienced during my nocturnal excursions to these places. Showing these photographs as a wrapper for these new soundscapes inspired by calm and mystery is the best way to share these feelings. The most vivid memory of these nights is the silence, the stillness, the sparkling light of the stars and the sweet fragrance of thyme that permeates everything in these regions of Aragon in Spain ".
The CD version is a special collector's edition limited to 200 copies.

Max Corbacho - Source of Present

Artist: Max Corbacho
P: 2017
Max Corbacho has been crafting electronic soundscapes for almost two decades and has progressively refined his space ambient style since his debut, Vestiges, appeared in 1998. Experimenting and forcing the limits of looping, reverb, Fx processing, and sequencing, Corbacho strengthens the oceanic character of his albums and intensifies its time-suspending quality. Source of Present starts through the magmatic flow of "The Beginning of Remembering", the first track of this new album, created during long sessions between 2015 and 2017. Dramatically, the music moves slowly as cosmic, nebulous, expansive stratums, orbiting into the boundaries of consciousness. Focused on the more intimate and oceanic side of Corbacho, a voice with which he began a long time ago with the soft interaction between textured layers and dense mercurial harmonies, the enveloping sound of these pieces forms a fine harmonic fabric. Gradually, this music manages to install us in a mental zone only established in the present moment, like a disconnection from all the noise and mental chatter that surrounds us in daily life. It moves smoothly like long slow waves, perhaps here calmer and softer than in recent works, giving continuity to the line undertaken in the double album The Ocean Inside.
“I have selected this group of pieces from a large number that was already created. Max says. The first piece to be composed was 'The Beginning of Remembering'. The time spent in the studio I remember as a cloud of calm, with the soft colors of the hybrid harmonic tonalities gradually changing and creating a myriad of sound waves, imperceptibly morphing and at the same time repeating itself in distant echoes.”
Max creates a special timbric quality in his music by mixing shades and textures, that shift with each other and produce a hypnotic, decelerating, sedative effect. At the same time, the power and energy of some passages penetrate dramatically into the very mystery of life. One can choose how one wants to listen to this music, if in an attentive way, by getting involved in listening, or as a sound background filling daily activities in the day and night. In both ways, the reward is a wondrous, deep and dreamy journey.

Max Corbacho - Splendid Labyrinths

Artist: Max Corbacho
P: 2015
Review by Jennifer Becker - Caerdroiandream:
It’s been nearly two and a half years since Max Corbacho released his last album, The Ocean Inside, which was an epic two and a half hour journey through monumental soundscapes and gorgeous atmospheres, the entire album an ambient masterpiece, concluding with the hauntingly beautiful Deeper Into the Ocean, a song I wished would never end. All of that time spent in anticipation of his new release was well worth the wait. It seemed to me that The Ocean Inside started a story that his latest work Splendid Labyrinths effortlessly picks up and continues, and as I’ve been absorbing this new soundworld, I’ve come to feel that it’s easily one of his best works, as well as the perfect follow up to the previous album.
As the music gradually drifts in on The Flowing Path, I have the distinct impression of wandering into another one of Max’s dreamscapes, and he wastes no time expertly weaving together all of the aural threads that immerse and guide me through this liquid labyrinth painted in sound. There’s a more pronounced dimension of harmonious complexity in his music reminiscent of an orchestral composition, an element that surfaces in some of his earlier releases, but on this album it flows more into the foreground and complements his own unique sound fantastically. Three minutes into the first track the event horizon is crossed via the most sublime musical transition, and I pick up the thread of mystery and follow it through converging, interweaving, and deviating currents of lightness and tension, melancholy and beauty, sometimes lost, sometimes found, yet always moving forward and deeper into the rich depths of Max’s soundworlds. The opening theme is a powerful one, and it accurately sets the tone for all that follows as it meanders through both expanded and confined spaces. And much like his last release, each track and the album as a whole bear a remarkable resemblance to breathing, the long, slow inhalations and exhalations established by the organic modulations of tone and volume.
Moving Towards the Center, the sense of negotiating a way through spaces less organized creeps in as chaotic elements and higher frequencies make an appearance and energize the motion. There’s a pulsing synth pad off in the distance akin to a lighthouse or beacon that wanders in as the energy picks up and continues all the way through to the descent towards the more remote and confined regions of Into the Earth Womb. The light dims here in the stillness, and the environment reverberates with a low frequency intensity that is strangely familiar for reasons that always seem to be just over the horizon. One of the strengths of Max’s compositions lies in his ability to balance tension and release, to give the dark and the light equal appeal, creating natural scapes where chaos and harmony are always at play. The more sinister sounds that he generates have a seduction about them, they aren’t jarring, nor do they leave me waiting for something more uplifting to drift in. His darkness has an allure to it that fascinates, in part I think because he doesn’t dwell in it, it feels to me like more of an exploratory excavation that will invariably lead into ethereal places. Places like Wonderheart.. an absolute gem of a track with a flowing orchestral air about it, and the most uplifting beautiful melody held fast by the gravity of the bass tones, all blending together into an impressive richness in sound, yet again demonstrating the balance inherent in his music.
One thing that struck me in particular about this album was how well suited the track titles are for each composition, as I listened through the album and sank into the mood created by it, I’d randomly take a look at the track titles and immediately recognize a correspondence. The closing theme drifts into a luminescent space that digs right into the heart with lovely synth lines which intersect and diverge within the movement of something massive and awe-inspiring. As the track trails off into the distance, I can feel that even though this has part of the voyage has ended, there’s still more space to be traversed and that the ultimate journey is far from over. Without question this is a brilliant album. This isn’t background ambient music, it is an art form that will compete for the full attention of the listener, and if you can tune yourself out, and sync up with what Max is sharing, the results are highly rewarding. His work has always carried with it a most effective means of loosing the temporal bonds on the spirit, and the long form track Future Terrain, which he released just prior to the Splendid Labyrinths album, works really well for this purpose.
Once again this gifted composer has given to us another masterfully crafted ambient journey, and as usual leaves me looking forward to more work from him.

Max Corbacho - The Ocean Inside

Artist: Max Corbacho
P: 2012
Max Corbacho returns with a new work, this time as a double album, which again immerse ourselves into touching atmospheric ambient realms of pure beauty. The Ocean Inside is a paradise of lush, cascading long chords, as oceanic waves, back and forth, in an eternal flow of shifting tones and spiraling harmonies. This is music aimed at energy, emotional and mind levels, for listeners who love deep, meditative ambient music. This long awaited new album presents an immersive flow of emotional soundworlds and harmonic structures that bring us to the depths of the inner ocean.
With this awesome album Corbacho portrays a very personal and introspective journey divided in two parts: one in his now classical melodic and cosmic style full of beauty and dreams and the other one introducing a deeper and a bit darker scenario surrounded by massive amounts of pads and drones that takes us to the dephts of serenity, like laying in the ground of an infinite ocean. In the end, this album is just an acurated soundtrack of every human soul.

Max Corbacho - The Talisman

Artist: Max Corbacho
P: 2006
Eleven compositions created between 2004 and 2006, based on new, on the edge, harmonic and textural explorations. Intense, light, dark and purely atmospheric, most of these songs were composed during various, long, deep meditative improvisation sessions. " In the planning stage, I have developed an intense activity in deeply programming new sounds in my habitual equipment, my beloved Korg Triton & Korg Z1, and sound processing outboard expansion units such Reverbs and Delays, as well some other esoteric gear. I have tried to create all the songs of this work "inside" my synthesizers exclusively, inside this deeply isolated world, an amniotic-like innerspace that develops in the synth and multieffects circuits, without insert any "external" element except for the voices in the first song. Also, I have experimented more and more with long, spacious reverbs and looping treatments ". Thus, the "oceanic" nature is strengthen, creating an atemporal quality, suspended in time and space, without rare elements disrupting the internal balance and natural flow of harmonic streams. No tempo, no synchronization, maybe only the breathing and the pulse of the artist. All fuelled by Max's personal, emotional perception of life's beauty.

Max Corbacho - The Unfolding Dawn

Artist: Max Corbacho
P: 2020
The Unfolding Dawn. A new long-form album, created by Max Corbacho during the first days of confinement due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Faced with the confusion that has plagued the world these days, a real urge to go inward, to the depths, has filled the hours in Max's studio with all these moments of silence and introspection. Serene yet powerful, this album is created with the sound palette of its synthesizers, delivering a warm and weightless sonic infusion of hope, temperance, and serenity.
This nearly 74-minute piece of music begins as an ethereal caress gently as the breeze, flowing in interconnected subtle wave passages like the light of dawn, deep and filled with the blessing of a new day. Composed of several interconnected sections in a set of subtle layers of chords and textures, it evolves in suspension in space and time, transporting the listener through different sound zones where sweetness and emotion are transmuted into a feeling of transcendence. A moment in eternity that is a deep look within us and our role in the reality of our world.
Immerse yourself at this moment as stillness surrenders its beauty to The Unfolding Dawn.
