Roboterwerke, the debut album by the German trio Supersempfft, is a fascinating work that was first released in 1979 and was recently re-released by the Hamburg label Bureau B. The album is considered a milestone in early electronic music and shows the visionary creativity of Franz Aumüller, Franz Knüttel and Dieter Kolb. »Roboterwerke« is more than just another electronic album. It is a conceptual work that combines futuristic sounds and humorous, almost bizarre elements. The eponymous piece is also a drum machine developed by Knüttel, whose mechanical rhythms and precise beats form the sonic foundation of the album and give it a mechanical character. The tracks on Robotwerke are a wild conglomeration of spacey synthesizer sounds, ambient elements, Krautrock and funky basslines. The music has a playful quality, underlined by the stories of an intergalactic frog – an Aumüller creation – giving the album a narrative structure that is both unusual and charming. “Roboterwerke” still seems surprisingly modern and creative today. It embodies the experimental spirit of an era in which electronic music was still taking its first steps. Supersempfft manages to combine this pioneering spirit with a playful lightness that makes the album still worth listening to even after decades.
