Senor Coconut

Uwe Schmidt (aka Atom Heart, Atom™, Señor Coconut; born August 27, 1968 in Frankfurt am Main, West Germany), is a German composer, musician and producer of electronic music. He is often regarded as the father of electrolatino, electrogospel and aciton (acid-reggaeton) music. In 1996 he invented the Señor Coconut moniker, and released the album El Gran Baile in 1997, right after he had moved to Santiago, Chile, in order to detach from the European music scene. His next release, in 2000, was the Latin-Kraftwerk fusion of El Baile Alemán. The album featured several Kraftwerk classics reworked with Latin instrumentation and rhythm.

Uwe Schmidt (who goes by many monikers including "Atom" and "Atom Heart") is a German musician, composer, and producer known for peculiar dabblings in Latin, electro, and heavy metal, frequently blending multiple genres in a single recording. Here he takes on a hard rock classic, "Smoke on the Water," made famous by Deep Purple after watching a casino burn down during a Frank Zappa concert in Switzerland. This is an iconic song that is hard for anyone but Deep Purple (Mark II, with Ian Gillan and Ritchie Blackmore) to pull off.
By diverging totally from the stylistic trappings of the original, Señor Coconut manages a completely new take on the classic. It isn't at all derivative, but is amusing and lighthearted, and is much to my liking. The CD contains three different versions of the song, of which my clear favorite is the "Single Version" which is great and salsa-tinged. The other two versions are far more representative of Schmidt's electro-dance roots. The "King Britt Funke Mix" at over ten minutes is a bit excessive even for dedicated fans of the root material such as myself, while the "Sieg Über Die Sonne Remix" is a less unruly dance cover that's still weird, but modestly enjoyable.
