Dean De Benedictis - A Lone Reply

Artist: Dean De Benedictis
P: 2001
This music is an atmospheric collage of multi ethnic influences, based primarily on Native American culture and spirit. "A lone reply" is a new turn, yet not unfamiliar territory for Dean De Benedictis, known in the electronic music world as Surface 10.
After accumulating an expansive sense of place from his travels, and connecting with the land and native people of the West, Dean was moved to pay homage to these earthly values.  On this CD Dean draws on deep, elongated, atmospheric melodies sometimes accompanied by driving tribal drum rhythms.
Such instruments as American Indian flutes (Mayan style), ocarina, Balinese flutes, piano, synth, hand drums, slit drums, and Dean's voice can be heard throughout "a lone reply", ninety percent of which was played by hand. Some of these instruments were accumulated during Dean's travels through the American west.  Field recordings and various samples were also utilized to create slowly evolving layers of sound, merging into a blissful, chasm-like setting.
"A lone reply" portrays a spirituality and sensitive closeness to the earth, while at the same time seeks to extract some darkness and sorrow from the mystery of existence in this time of overwhelming technological advancement. Dean states, "This is simply a lone, singular reply to it all. One with deep serenity."

Dean De Benedictis - Salvaging the Past

Artist: Dean De Benedictis
P: 2005
Dean De Benedictis, has envisioned a vital work of instrumental compositions, exploring the art of electronic music with a refreshing integrity. Blending traditional electronic tones and structures with acoustic elements, he has sculpted an album that is raw and direct. In essence, he has captured a heart of true electronic music, while suggesting more thought-provoking themes.
De Benedictis realizes this vision through various electronic tonalities, samples, and acoustic instruments such as mayahachi flute, bamboo flutes, cello, piano, voice, guitars, hand drums, and percussion – applying all, with the passion and inspiration of the masters before him.
Salvaging the Past is not only an homage to the electronic music of the past, but expands the vocabulary of the present.
To the listener:
Our physical realm is comprised of drastically separate entities mix-matching and ambiguously aligning into one harmonious collage. Such is the underlying principal behind "Salvaging The Past.” It is not the first time I've based a project on this philosophy. So much of my unreleased work had been inspired by this principle, and specifically by a variety of traditional ambient music genres, that eventually I felt compelled to tie this particular work together... how could I not? With some songs containing an intense electronic base and others a pure acoustic base, creating the mood for "Salvaging The Past" was tricky, but I do feel that we brought the music together as best as possible. As always, it is all from the same soul.

Surface 10 - Surface Tensions

LTD 1000 Copies.

This release from 2006 offers 66 minutes of melodic electronic music laced with illbient undercurrents. Surface 10 is Dean De Benedictis.
Prepare to have your awe stretched as dense electronic textures conquer the sky and maintain a strident presence. Meanwhile, livelier riffs and heavenly sequences dominate the music's foreground with their vibrant behavior. Passages stream with sneaky embellishments, each increasing the density while contributing to a greater overall resonance (albeit a resonance seasoned with twitchy personality).
Synthetic rhythms chitter away, generating languid patterns that are too sedate to belong on a dancefloor, but too excitable to remain subliminal. Sometimes these beats spurn the notion of tempos and just act as additional aspects in the thickening cluster of sounds.
Melody plays an important role in this music, but often the tunes are host to nests of quirky effects all vying for attention. There's a definite illbient edge going on here, as harsh noises of utterly mechanical disposition agitate the flow with their staccato chatter. Sounds are frequently chopped in mid-definition and fiercely repeated. If not for the even flow of the rest of the mix, you'd suspect your CD player of malfunctioning.
These disruptive elements keep your attention focused on the music, where it should be in the first place. Not an instant of this inventive tuneage should be missed.
