Mind-Flux

Michael Kersten, born 1960 in Varel and Thomas Fanger, born 1962 in Berlin met at the Berlin open air festival "Klangmeile" in 1979. They combined their analogue synthesisers and sequencers, which were mostly custom made and created their first electronic sound sculptures. In the 80s Fanger and Kersten focused more on rhythm based electronic experimental ideas. They worked with singers and other instrumentalists and also composed several pieces for art exhibitions. In the late 1980s they started to blend their psychedelic roots with modern style elements such as contemporary beats. Now they called themselves Mind-Flux. In 1997 they founded their second project Fanger & Kersten. Until today they released 10 longplay cds, 1 vinyl e.p., 1 maxi-cd and 2 dvds.

Fanger + Kersten - Elektrik Massage

Artist: Fanger & Kersten
P: 2008
LTD: 1000

Tracks 1&2 recorded live April 2002 at Toskana Therme, Bad Sulza, Germany.
Tracks 3 recorded 2001 at mind~flux studio, Berlin, Germany.
Tracks 4 recorded live November 2000 at Petrus Kirche, Berlin, Germany.

This previously unreleased material from Fanger & Kersten, aka Mind~Flux, is a collection of studio and live recordings from 2000-2002.
Normally the duo tends to likes their beats dance-floor ready, but this disc finds them mostly in a dream-like state of mind, in particular on the soft swirling synths of “Salt Tank.” This exceptionally pleasant music was recorded at the famous Toskana Therme, no doubt perfect accompaniment for those relaxing in its underwater spa. Piano and warm synths and little electronic blips make this a welcome introduction to the disc.
“Gentle Waves” is eerily similar to the Manuel Gottsching classic “E2-E4,” exceptionally well done.

Fanger + Kersten - Splashdown

Artist: Fanger & Kersten
P: 2000
Fanger + Kersten must've been relaxing poolside while the debate over whether spacemusic deals with outer space or inner space raged on in internet chatrooms and email discussion groups. On their album Splashdown, the duo pays no attention to either of these two propositions and takes their concept back to the ocean, leading the listener on an extra-terrestrial water related odyssey of epic proportions. The energy level of the music is always positive and can swell quite high. Ever evolving analogue rhythms propel the music as enigmatic electronic textures and chords wash over us. A synth choir drifts in with the gentle dynamics of the evening tide as we imagine the deep blue/green of a rolling underwater realm. Songs and movements crossfade easily from one wave to the next and often the music leads us to some distant horizon. This music comes in the wake of the Berlin school, but Fanger + Kersten have weighed anchor and set sail from the coastline. They've made the music their own and Splashdown an enjoyable and fulfilling listening experience.

Mind-Flux - Konception of Space

Artist: Mind-Flux

1997
What is space? How would one answer that question in musical terms? With profoundly astral electronics, fanciful keyboards, and determined E-perc. At least, these are the chosen vehicles for Thomas Fanger and Michael Kersten on this 1997 release. Starting with "Destination Unknown", Mind-Flux will show you "Mr. Johnson's Trip to the Moon", "Cars on Mars", "A Moody Night on Cyrus 7", and "Ms. Johnson's Trip to Venus". Be certain your pressure suit is properly sealed, with your earplugs carefully inserted. You'll not want to miss a single note of this sonic excursion. Peppy keyboards caper and prance with nimble-fingered response amid a seething nebula of quantumly-charged electronics. Drones and pulsations are delivered with rapid relish, streaming past you like blurred sequences of shooting stars. Extremely rhythmic E-perc is a constant companion, injecting dance qualities to the tuneage. Periodic use of vocoder vocals lends a Kraftwerk edge to some of this music. You can also expect the strong influence of Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze in the band's early sound. You will also observe the presence of moody, non-rhythmic passages which exemplify Mind-Flux's own evolving style.

This sonic voyage will last 74 minutes.
