Kraftwerk

Kraftwerk is a pioneering and a highly influential electronic music band from Düsseldorf, Germany. The signature Kraftwerk sound combines driving, repetitive rhythms with catchy melodies, mainly following a Western classical style of harmony, with a minimalistic and strictly electronic instrumentation. The group's simplified lyrics are at times sung through a vocoder or generated by computer-speech software. Kraftwerk were one of the first groups to popularize electronic music. In the early to late 1970s and the early 1980s, Kraftwerk's distinctive sound was revolutionary, and it has had a lasting effect across many genres of modern music.

Karl Bartos - Off the Record

Artist: Karl Bartos
P: 2012

Karl Bartos' new album is an audio-visual sensation! Lost for many years, some of his early music has been reconceived and re-contextualised in a thrilling modern setting. Here's the story: during Kraftwerk's heyday Karl Bartos wrote – off the record – a secret acoustic diary. Based on his musical jottings – rhythms, riffs, hooks, sounds, chords and melodies – this is what he has come up with today: twelve brand new, exciting, timeless songs.

Kraftwerk - Autobahn

Artist: Kraftwerk
P: 1974 / 1996
Though they'd recorded three previous albums, Kraftwerk's modern pop legacy starts with the sounds of a few footsteps and a slamming car door--the beginning of a 22-minute musically impressionistic excursion down Germany's famed superhighway. An unexpected hit on both sides of the Atlantic, Autobahn's "fahren, fahren, fahren" refrain echoes "Fun, Fun, Fun" by the Beach Boys (just one of Kraftwerk's unlikely influences), while the entire concept recalls Brian Wilson's frustrated attempts at creating what he called "a pocket symphony." The rhythmic synth pulse that carries the title track will be familiar to Kraftwerk admirers, while cofounder Florian Schneider's flute work and other more delicate melodic touches hearken back to the band's prog-rock foundations (as do the atmospheric "Kometenmelodie 1 & 2," "Mitternacht," and "Morgenspaziergang"). Kraftwerk's fascination with technology has been well documented, but the revelation of Autobahn is the playful human spirit behind the robots' masks.

Kraftwerk - Computer World

Artist: Kraftwerk
P: 1981
English Language Version. When Kraftwerk released Computer World on an unsuspecting public back in 1981, the thought of Electronic music and computers taking over seemed like a farce. Now, a quarter of a century later, Kraftwerk's musical vision has come true tenfold and many Electronic bands cite them as their main influence. This classic slice of Kraftwerk's musical tapestry is an astounding album filled with bleeps, blips, beats and a huge dose of melody that inspired thousands of musicians and fans to go forth and multiply (literally). Tracks like 'Computer Love', 'Computer World' and 'It's More Fun To Compute' have been sampled by artists from all genres, especially Rap and R&B. The hit single 'Pocket Calculator' may seem like ancient material, lyrically, but most of the world now operate their own iPods, Blackberries, cell phones, etc. so the meaning is not lost. Even the ominous 'Numbers' still sound slightly creepy after all these years. So, what have we learned from Kraftwerk? Everything.

Kraftwerk - Die Mensch-Maschine (Remaster)

Artist: Kraftwerk
P: 1978 / 2009
The Man Machine is in my humble opinion the most perfect Kraftwerk record. Its sound anticipates the Techno movement for almost a decade and was a major influence on the synth pop bands of the early 80's (remember Orchestral Manoeuvres, Human League, etc...). this album also still showed the genuine German romanticism related to the Machine world that thelater albums lacked.
The Model, Neon Lights, etc all clever synth songs that truly show the unquestionable contribution of Kraftwerk to modern music.

Kraftwerk - Electric Cafe (English Version)

Artist: Kraftwerk
P: 1986
Was only familiar with their material up to Computer World. Decided to try this one from 1986 and was very pleasantly surprised. There are a few nominal similarities to Computer World, but this is definetly a more advanced and finely crafted work. Aestetically the sound is wonderful, crystal-clear and still retaining that fat analog sound but using electronic sources (though I think on one track I detected some bass guitar, and maybe even guitar). The Karl Bartos - sung "Telephone Call" is reminiscent of Depeche Mode at it's best. There is much that looks to the future on this, including breakbeat and ambient electronica. Check it out if you like electronic experimental, dance etc. Not a dull moment on this, and a MUST-HAVE for Kraftwerk fans.

Kraftwerk - I was a Robot (2nd Edition)

Artist: Kraftwerk
P: 2003 / 2010
Kraftwerk - I Was A Robot is an insider's story of those turbulent and buoyant times. Wolfgang Flur, the band's drummer spearheaded the genre of synth-pop, creating the worlds first electronic drum machine, whose patent was almost stolen from under him by the bands founder members. When he later discovered that his contribution to their previous material was going unrecognised he found himself in the eye of a bitter whirlwind of acrimony and counter-allegation that culminated in the attempted suppression of this book's publication. Now fully vindicated in the courts, his true story of die Menschmaschine can at last be told.

Kraftwerk - Minimum-Maximum (English) DVD

Artist: Kraftwerk
P: 2007
Live-DVD will appear as a "Minimum-Maximum DVD" double DVD disc set featuring the full live set from Kraftwerk's 2004-2005 World Tour in PCM stereo and DTS 5.1 surround sound (plus bonus track of Aero Dynamik filmed live at the MTV Music Awards in Edinburgh - 2003).
This is the english version. The Godfathers of Glitch and the Kings of Kling-Klang come out of seclusion with a double live DVD culled from various concerts on their 2004 tour. Minimum-Maximum is essentially a greatest-hits album with an audience applauding and occasionally shouting. Without them, of course, you'd never know the album was live, since Kraftwerk is the band that put the programming in pop music. Not much has changed with them since the 1980s. They're still wired to the same sonic circuitry as on Electric Café in 1986, sculpting glistening electro-soundscapes that pulse but never quite groove. And they still sing in that flat, German-accented English and French with Speak and Spell electro-voices. But rather than sound dated, this has a timeless charm, especially since Kraftwerk are among the few Kraut rock groups with a sense of humor. With only two studio albums in the last 20 years, you have to give them credit for not caving in to current electronica and techno trends--Kraftwerk remain resolutely electronic. Even their samples sound synthesized. But also give them credit for some of the most relentlessly glistening electronic music ever crafted, and a sound that remains surprisingly pure. All the hits are here, from "Autobahn" to "Tour de France," but nicely buffed to a high chrome finish.

Kraftwerk - Radio-Activity (Remaster)

Artist: Kraftwerk
P: 1975 / 2009
Kraftwerk built upon the international success of Autobahn by expanding their conceptual conceits to an album-length exploration of radio waves (and the band's other favorite wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum). Musically, the album represents a quantum leap of pop sensibility; though still distinctly a "prog" soundscape, its brilliant melodic hooks (best represented by the title track and "Airwaves") are organized in more traditional--read shorter--form. In tracks such as the minimalist audio-verite "News," Kraftwerk pay homage to another of their musical influences, the great modern composer/theorist Karlheinz Stockhausen. "Antenna" foreshadows the techno-gods they became, with its electronic washes and clever less-is-too-much lyrics, which read, in total: "I'm the antenna catching vibrations; you're the transmitter, give information!" Radio-Activity is an underrated masterpiece waiting to be rediscovered. The musical tracks for the german and the english version are the same, only the CD Cover states different names, but within the songs, both languages can be heard on each version.

Kraftwerk - Remixes

Artist: Kraftwerk
P: 2022
Remixes’ showcases Kraftwerk’s immense influence on Club & DJ culture, techno and all forms of electronic dance music. Featuring 19 official remixes, it collates Kraftwerk’s own remixes alongside contributions from some of the world’s biggest DJ’s and producers including François Kervorkian, William Orbit, Étienne de Crécy, Orbital, Underground Resistance, DJ Rolando and Hot Chip. The remixes are taken from various Kraftwerk 12” singles, CD singles and digital releases from 1991-2021. The album also plays host to Kraftwerk’s very latest Kling Klang studio output with ‘Non Stop’, and remixes of ‘Home Computer’ and ‘Tour De France (Etape 2)’. ‘Non Stop’ actually began life as a soundbite recorded for MTV in the 1980s, but in 2020, Kraftwerk took the original 30 second sound clip and then transformed it into a full 8 minute odyssey as it appears here.

Digitally remastered edition of this 1986 album from the German Electronic outift. Kraftwerk return from five years of silence to reclaim their throne as leaders of a machine-pop revolution that they themselves began over a decade before. Their Techno Pop album, first released under the name Electric Caf‚ but now restored to its originally intended title, provides a 360-degree overview of a multi-lingual, multi-channel, musically diverse global village. From the block-rocking beats of 'Boing Boom Tschack' to the electronic Funk and computer animation of 'Musique Non Stop', Kraftwerk soar into the digital age. Their first excursion into digital recording finds both beauty and unease in a polyglot world of permanent media overload. Once again, Dusseldorf's test pilots of the musical future effortlessly break new ground.
