Airsculpture - Burn

Artists: Airsculpture
P: 2008

Burn is a recording of the Hampshire Jam 2 concert, which has been demanded as a release pretty much since the last notes faded.
Burn is massively powerful, slowly building from a deep dark ambience up to a huge sequencer-driven frenzy. Sound sources ranging from real analogue modular synths and mellotron to up to the minute digital instruments. These are used to craft a soundscape that blends classic sequences with driving rhythms underpinning AirSculpture's distinctive melodic flourishes.

Airsculpture - Graveyard Shift

Artists: Airsculpture
P: 2014
So what is the present but an outgrowth of the past? The early work of Tangerine Dream is often cited as establishing the "Berlin-School".
They explored a new territory, which left a path. Decades later we find the UK synth trio AirSculpture fully invested in musical endeavors meant to advance the ideals established during this golden age of synthesizer and sequencer Spacemusic.
Graveyard Shift (64'15"), the product of their STAR'S END live to air studio session of 19 November 2006, feels like a less urgent/more tech savy re-imagining of the TD classic Ricochet (1975).
This style speaks to us as no other form can. It is a music sensitive to its own era, as we are not listening "to" something, but listening "for" something. It expresses a mood, an atmosphere, a tone in a numberless variety of subtle shadings and differences.
Graveyard Shift includes two tracks, the more focused and compact "Argent Engine" (10'32"). This ten minute sequencer piece charges through space like a starship whooshing past solar systems, while the title track expands slowly over three sections and 50 minutes at a more deliberate pace.
Beginning in an amorphous texture this piece fills space with dense sound forms. Drifting, rolling drones and chords form a current of sound - out of which patterns of tones echo and advance so very slowly. As these electronic droplets gradually move outward and fill in the empty slots and skips the pulse of this track quickens, growing our anticipation. "Graveyard Shift" (53'41") sustains an interesting energy throughout its run, never peaking, but never running out of fuel. Chords mix with lead melody lines as synthesizers rush and then wait in service to a most interesting compositional contour - facilitated by the late-night hour of this recording session and the objective of producing a sustained listening space for all the folks out there in radioland. In the third movement the sonic content starts to melt as metallic muted ringing and modulated effects bring us to an unusual zone of timbre experiments and a darkening chill.
Music is an art that exists in point of time. Its events are abstract in nature, and pulling them all together in the imagination is difficult for the audience. Added value comes when listening to Graveyard Shift for more than the sheer pleasure, more than the potent and primitive force, of sound itself. This music has an expressive power and a meaning behind the notes - which as listeners is our purpose to feel.

Rare and awesome synth/ambient album from Airsculpture. Similar to late 70's, early 80's era Tangerine Dream with plenty of sequencers and dark, ambient soundscapes. If you enjoyed 'Rubycon', 'Encore', 'Poland' or 'Logos' by TD then this will please.

Airsculpture - TranceAtlantic

Artists: Airsculpture
P: 2005

AirSculpture, the synth trio from the UK, made their east-coast concert debut in Philadelphia at The Gatherings Concert Series on 17 April 2004. Recordings of this concert, and that of their Star's End live radio concert later that night, were fashioned into the double CD TranceAtlantic and released in Autumn of 2005. Made up of Adrian Beasley, John Christian and Peter Ruczynski, AirSculpture has been using concert spaces to facilitate electronic experimentation since their first live event in September of 1995.
Over the years they have found that the atmosphere of the venue, the attention of the audience and several other immeasurable factors, have a significant affect on the interaction between players and acts as a fuel for their performances. The music on TranceAtlantic is structured somewhat differently than on previous cds.

Airsculpture - Travelling Light

Artists: Airsculpture
P: 2018

Recorded at the E-day festival, this consists of two long tracks. The almost hour long title track slowly builds up a polyrhythmic jigsaw of sequencer patterns, like a sculptor hunting for the form buried in a slab of marble. Or something. The band were given a pretty free hand as to timing so the music has time to breathe and develop. On the day, the set was even longer but a section that was a little sparse due to technical difficulties has been compressed. Despite the time warping it's all here!
The coda to this, Convoi Exceptionel (a bonus track to try to thwart the pirates. It won't work, of course) took place as the encore. With the energy still high from the main set, there's no let up and it's straight into modular-fuelled sequencer heaven again.
But just in case that sounds a bit one-dimension, don't worry. The ever shifting sequencers serve as a backdrop for some of the most intense playing seen at an airsculpture concert. Vast phasing pads, wailing leads, it's all here.

Airsculpture - Vanishing Point Vol. 2

Artists: Airsculpture
P: 2016

Vanishing Point volume 2 is the (predictable) sequel to last year's volume one. Whereas the first disc was assembled from various live and broadcast performances, volume two focusses entirely on the Gatherings concert at St. Mary's, Hamilton Village in Philadelphia. Like the TranceAtlantic album that also featured live music from this venue (8 years earlier) it covers a wide range of electronica from delicate introspective pieces that the church environment inspires, to the band's trademark massive sequencer excursions and synthetic abstractions.
The concert is presented in full, as a double CD (glass mastered).

Airsculpture - Widely Spaced

Artists: Airsculpture
P: 2022

This is a long piece that spins between many moods from the deepest drifts to up-tempo beats.
The pandemic and its greater and lesser lockdowns (whether mandated or just sensible) haven't been great for us. As an improvising band we thrive off playing together in the same space. Worse, as a lazy improvising band we tend to do things when we have a pressing deadline to deal with. which generally means a concert to rehearse for. With nobody taking the risk of setting up gigs likely to be cancelled, not to mention the dreaded B word messing up any EU opportunities everything dried up.
Except... we had been planning on coming over to the US to play at the Gatherings. We had to cancel that early on as we couldn't really risk paying for flights we might have had to abandon (and sadly we were right). But we decided to create something to play on Stars End on the night we would have been there. This is the music we made.
It's a lockdown recording, made by passing files around between us and building it up. You can hear our individual musical personalities in various sections depending on who originated them; we've also tried to play together - shifted in time and space - to make it more of a band effort.
The original concept was to lead on it being a Halloween broadcast, with lots of spooky darkness. In the end little of this survived and it ending up touching all kind of musical bases. Definitely airsculpture, but also something a bit different.

Ideation - Adrift
Artist: Ideation
P: 2008
Ltd 300
This release from 2009 offers 58 minutes of sprightly electronic tuneage.
Ideation is Paul Nagle and Pete Ruczynski (from Airsculpture), with Phil Smillie (on guitar on two tracks). Sinuous tunes are crafted by a diverse array of electronics with e-perc lending appropriate oomph. The electronics are extremely diverse. Texturals, keyboards, and inventive effects all contribute to the music. Instead of functioning as backdrops, the tonalities often take up vital positions amid the more substantial elements. The keyboards establish strong riffs that are then cycled to scamper through the busy mix while effects glitter all over the place. Additional riffs are introduced to the mix, resulting in a steadfast stream of bewitching aspects. The gestalt forms melodies of attractive complexity. The melodies are busy, but maintain a gentle attitude despite the hyperactivity displayed by their individual sonic components. This contrast of spry elements generating pacific tuneage is quite enthralling. While some e-perc is employed, the majority of rhythms are produced by the swift application of electronic sounds, creating tempos of a non-impact nature. These artificial rhythms enliven the music with constant animation. While some vocal effects are featured here and there, there’s no lyrical content. The voices serve as clever punctuations. The compositions are pleasant and thoroughly enjoyable. Serpentine melodies flourish with a congenial buoyancy seasoned by hordes of engaging embellishments. There’s a subtle psychedelic character to this music.
