Tietchens, Asmus

Tietchens is a German electronic musician who has pursued "absolute music" through an almost mathematical process of rigid formal exercises. With strong ties to Karlheinz Stockhausen's early electronic work, Tietchens specializes in irregular patterns of sonic abstractions that are suspended in gray drones to create cold textural voids from external references.

Asmus Tietchens - Biotop

Artist: Asmus Tietchens
P: 1981 / 2013

Asmus Tietchens is one of the best known German artists in the field of abstract music. His early works though are finest avant-garde synthesizer pop. "Biotop" was Tietchens' first release on the German label Sky Records (Cluster, Michael Rother etc.). It is inhabited by insectoid squeaks, banging percussion and echoes of displaced nursery rhymes. These blaring, crashing tracks glare with artifice, mirroring the ideas of an artist lacking the inclination and capacity to compose straightforward easy listening music.

CD comes with booklet.

Liliental - Liliental

Artist: Liliental
P: 1976 / 2024

Electronic music pioneer Dieter Moebius (Cluster, Harmonia) wanted to record an album together with his musical soul-mates, Okko Bekker and Asmus Tietchens, at Conny Plank s studio in 1976. In the event, Plank himself even participated in the recordings as a musician. Two other musicians also joined the fold: bassist Helmut Hattler and saxophonist Johannes Pappert (both from Kraan) had just finished working on an album and were happy to stay on at the studio. Suddenly, there were six musicians with six different personalities who had never worked together before. But what could easily have gone wrong turned into a great document of electronic music, which was rather atypical for its time and conveyed a certain lightness, revealing complex structures on closer inspection.

Each release in this series will be curated by a musician perfectly suited to the task. The first release will be "SKY RECORDS. Compiled by TIM GANE". The erstwhile Stereolab mastermind delves through the archives of the legendary German Krautrock label. Gane: "Sky was one of the labels that represented this more playful second period of innovative German music that first started in the late 60's and had developed in the late 70's into something rather different but, I think, no less groundbreaking."
