Deyen, Adelbert von

DELBERT VON DEYEN is a relatively obscure electronic artist whose style is very similar to the famed KLAUS SCHULZE, even down to the album covers! Rightfully so, he claims SCHULZE as his main influence. His career lasted from the late Seventies to the early to mid-Eighties. His first album, "Sternzeit," is perhaps his most famous SCHULZE-like release. On later albums, like "Eclipse," there was a definite spacey, Pink Floyd feeling present throughout. On this album, he even decided to incorporate vocals. Today, VON DEYEN no longer records and instead has become a painter.

Though Von Deyen is a relatively obscure electronic artist, his music will most likey appeal to fans of the genre (especially TANGERINGE DREAM and SCHULZE). His best album is probably is probably his first. Every Progressive Electronic fan should give at least the first album a listen.

Adelbert von Deyen - Atmosphere

Artist: Adelbert von Deyen
P: 1980 / 1992

"Atmosphere", Adelbert Von Deyen's third release, is the first album on which he starts to show his own musical style and direction rather than sounding like a clone of Klaus Schulze. The title track still has a strong Schulze influence but there are now unique touches and differences that distinguish this as Von Deyen's work. The result is a much more satisfying release than either "Sternzeit" or "Nordborg".
The two short opening tracks are reminiscent of Ashra. "Time Machine" is bouncy, fast paced electronic music while "Silverrain" is a gentler, melodic piece which reminds me of some of the tracks on Ashra's "New Age of Earth".
"Atmosphere", Von Deyen's longest piece, is broken into two parts. This is a pure Berlin school electronics with long sections with sequencer driven bass lines that is reminiscent of mid '70s Klaus Schulze releases. Von Deyen adds effects, like a plane taking off, that Schulze wouldn't have used. The sections of the piece have distinct themes as well.
It's all artfully done and a very good listen. "Atmosphere" is certainly the best of Adelbert Von Deyen's early works.

Adelbert von Deyen - Nordborg
Artist: Adelbert von Deyen
P: 1979 / 2017

Von Deyens debut album “Sternzeit” had caused quite a stir in 1978 in his home town of Lübeck, where the unconventional young artist found himself inundated with fan mail and booked for autograph sessions. His contract with Sky Records obliged him to deliver a set number of albums to the labe one per year. Enjoying financial independence, he was able to give up his job and focus exclusively on his music. “Nordborg” appeared in 1979 and featured just two tracks, one on each side. It was inspired by a short holiday in Nordborg on the Danish island of Alsen, which coincided with a violent Moonrise”, the A-side title, is a slow motion improvisation on the rising of the moon on Nordborg. Opening with synths evocative of seagull cries, meditative soundscapes mesh together massive lead sounds in unhurried harmony. Winds swirl, synths twist into electronic spheres of sound, drifting without any clear dramatic structure. Immersed in introspection, Adelbert von Deyen celebrates life in the moment. The B-side piece, depicts the snowstorm. Perfect for Adelbert von Deyen’s artistic expression: sustained organ tones deliver beat frequencies, an electric piano pattern is lost in reverie, winds build through the ARP Odyssey, finally sinking into icy melancholy and detached organ tones. Towards the end we are reconciled by an almost sacral organ part which Adelbert von Deyen brings full circle as he returns to the opening theme. Adelbert von Deyen recorded the second album, like the first, on a Revox A77 tape machine in his little home studio. The instrument list echoes that of “Sternzeit”, with an ARP Odyssey performance synthesizer, a Far fisa VIP 233 organ, aFar fisa String-Orchestra, Hohner Clavinet D6 electric piano rhythm computer and an electric guitar.

Adelbert von Deyen - Sternzeit
Artist: Adelbert von Deyen
P: 1978 / 2016
Adelbert von Deyen is a protagonist of the so-called BerlinSchool (Berliner Schule) of electronic music. On his debut album Sternzeit, he takes his time to develop sound structures, oftendrifting, floating blissfully into tonal interference. The listener alsorequires time and patience, but will be rewarded with a Zen-like state of contemplation.

Adelbert Von Deyen published most part of his musical catalogue on the legendary Sky (known for the releases of many late 70's electro-kraut albums). His music is in the direct vein of spacious textured electronic epics of Klaus Schulze but with a much more expansive explorations throw minimal impressionistic melodies. Consequently the music is less agitated, calmer, sometimes admiting the effusion of trancey dark cinematic drones. Sternzeit is more a dreamy-like, melancholic trip focused on flowing abstract, crystalline synth waves, molecular effects and punctual minimal hypno pulses. The result is really convincing. The cover reminds Klaus Schulze's majestic "Cyborg" double album. The opening theme per aspera ad astra contains some explicit references to Cyborg notably with the use of gorgeously angelic organic processes and obsessive cosmic sounds. However the musical aesthetism is rather different. Von Deyen beautifully turned Klaus Schulze's tripped out creepy ambiences into a more aquatic, new agey, intimate environment. The second piece is less melodic, entirely built on shimmering, buzzing hypno-loops and on analog synthscapes. Suspensful, dark-astral droning sequences in the genre of early Schulze. This album is highly recommended for fans of proggy "kosmische" music. Similar experiences can be heard on synthezised works from Bernd Kistenmacher or from Robert Schroeder.
