Eric van der Heijden - Cosmic Flight No. 3

Artist: Eric van der Heijden
P: 2003
Cosmic Flight Number 3 is a "Berlin" school influenced recording, drawing on '70s and '80s Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze with an occasional nod to other influences.
The sound design on the pieces was carefully chosen and the recording quality is excellent throughout. The sequences are punchy, bubbly or languid where appropriate. All of the pieces feature the artist's recognizable melodic style and sound design so that one is aware that one is listening to original expression that is attempting to fuse various classic styles. The melodies lean toward pleasant, optimistic sounds and are well-executed. I enjoyed this release and think that folks who enjoyed the sunny side of the Berlin school [circa] 1975-86 will enjoy this as well.
The recording begins with "Take Off Number 3". A minor-key string pad over nice vocoder influenced effects. A nice bass line sequence moves this brief introductory piece to its conclusion, giving hints of what is to come.
"On The Third Day" begins with a familiar sounding chord progression that acts as a looping scaffold for some nice melodic improvisation. The sound design on display here is particularly nice, sounding very clear and full. The overall mood of the piece produces a relaxed and happy feel.
"Cosmic Flight #3" follows with a nice bouncy '70s-type interlocking sequence that interacts with a wah-wah guitar/organ sound. Light percussion is added. The opening pieces are the closest on the recording to the '70s-type Berlin sound.
"Triode" follows and this piece evokes the spirit of Ray Lynch's Deep Breakfast with its "bubbly" sequences and clear melodies and basses. The sounds are quite thick and very pretty. Thematic construction of the piece contrasts the "bubbly" sounds with noble anthems quite well. Sumptuous sounding orchestral textures are gradually built up over the piece quite naturally.
"Rule Of Threes" starts out quite differently with piano sounds noodling over a light background., more reminiscent of mid '80s Tangerine Dream than the other styles presented. The piece gradually builds on a sequence that begins to percolate and there are some guitar solo sounds that add to the mix. The piece becomes more lively as sequences are built under the slow melodies. The contrast of the slow melodies with the sequential activity is creative and holds the listener's interest. "Tritonic Waves" begins with some solo sounds that that introduce a busy sequence. Once again, the artist creates some lush synth textures to accompany the various sequences. This piece was pleasant, but needed more variety or different techniques to rise above that, in my opinion. "3rd Life" was recorded live with the aid of two other synthesists and begins as a pleasant little series of melodies before morphing into a tour de force demonstration of what can be done with a keyboard arpeggiator. This was a very enjoyable track because it had the twin virtues of solid construction and spontaneous interaction. "Trilogic Trilogy" ends the recording with some gentle, breezy, melodies and quiet sounds that gradually become anthemic and bright. A nice, uplifted mood is created. This recording was enjoyable and well-executed and is sure to be enjoyed by many. While little new ground is broken, the artist demonstrates how much can be expressed if a familiar series of styles are integrated and well executed.

Eric van der Heijden - Da Capo

Artist: Eric van der Heijden
P: 1998
Eric van der Heijden almost worked 7 years to complete this 2nd CD: the classic romantically inspired "Da Capo". A lot of personal feelings and moods can be heard throughout the album, it is brought very close to the listener in all its beauty. Don't expect only calm, serene music, because from time to time some heavy rhythms and sequences show up. "Da Capo" sounds full of regained confidence, it's an overwhelming musical statement for the many who are always searching for the best new things in nowadays electronic and contemporary instrumental music.

Eric van der Heijden - Universal Time Zone

Artist: Eric van der Heijden
P: 1991 / 1998
Musician Eric van der Heijden is a close friend of Ron Boots, who met each other at the Klemdag 1989, which actually was the start of a long-time friendship which lasts until today.
Ron invited Eric at his home and encouraged him to make more music after he had heard Eric's first composition "Time is Running", which was made with the D-50 synthesizer.
Several tracks would follow, which all ended up on the 1990-cassette "Lightning Times", which was officially released on the Eindhoven-based Synteam label (a private label for electronic music founded by Ron Boots and Bas Broekhuis).
Later on, the pieces of the cassette formed the basis for the cd "Universal Time Zone".
Eric's accessible music is overall melodic, warm and full of emotion. It keenly combines engaging sound textures, rhythms and nice sequencing, in which occasionally influences of both Tangerine Dream and Vangelis shine through.
Note: The album was re-released in 1998

V/A - Dutch Masters

Artist: Various Artists
P: 2011
LTD: 400

As follow-up to the highly successful Analogy series (part 1, 2, and 3), Groove Unlimited is now releasing a new sampler.
This time the approach is very different. The idea is to do an album with Dutch EM artists and let them compose music to a painting they like. The album is called 'Dutch Masters' and you will hear music the artists composed to paintings of Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Mondriaan, Escher, Bosch and many more.
Artists that participated are: Ron Boots, Gert Emmens, Eric van der Heijden, Bas Broekhuis, Remy, Synth.nl, Rene Splinter, Meesha, and René van der Wouden. If you want to hear how these artists translate the image of their favorite painting into music get a hold of this album.

V/A - E-Scape 2015

Artist: V/A
P: 2015
'E-Scape 2015′ is a collection of exclusive tracks from artists who will be appearing at the 2015 UK E-Scape Festival on 30th May. Despite the varied line up and styles on offer, this CD hangs together very well and is a very emotive album. From the classic opening UK synth sound of John Dyson and Michael Shipway’s ‘Ride the Beach’, through the romanticism of Dreamerproject’s ‘Hymne’, and the Berlin school adventures of Ron Boots’s ‘Berlin Thunder’, the album never dips below ‘excellent’ and there are no throwaway tracks here. Eric van der Heijden’s ‘Strange Escapism’ is a surreal sound voyage, FD Project’s ‘Beautiful Day’ is a full on, guitar driven live recording. David Wright’s ‘Walking With Ghosts’ Ambient Remix by DJMass is an interesting take on an old favourite and ‘Song for a Friend’ is a delicate rhythmic, ballad dedicated to the late Steve Roberts. Glenn Main’s beautiful ‘Escape the TNBC’ also has a strong personal overtone. Nice to hear music from Paul Ward again too, the interesting and playful ‘The Last Toy Emily Broke’ while Ron Boots concludes the album with the drifting and spaced out ‘Slow Flow’.

The album is dedicated to the memory of Edgar Froese and Steve Roberts.

This 2015 release features 77 minutes of dreamy electronic music.

This release offers previously unreleased tracks by musicians participating in AD Music’s E-Scape Electronic Music Festival in 2015. The contributions include:

John Dyson & Michael Shipway. Twinkling tones conspire with cerebral chords to produce an elegant tune laced with rhythms.

David Wright. Solemn beats and melancholy keyboards craft a stately piece dedicated to lost friends.

Eric van der Heijden. Reedy keys combine with breathy flutes and gentle percussives to generate a moody track in search of a way out.

Dreamerproject. Delicate harpsichord, rhythms and orchestral strings create a reverent song of tender sentiments.

Ron Boots. Majestic-but-understated electronics generate a mood of anticipation with cyclic chords seasoned by synthetic strings. The music gradually swells in muster, featuring a blooping undercurrent as the song’s puissance mounts to a loving crescendo.

Paul Ward. Strong rhythms support slippery keys that describe an edgy tune.

FD Project. Vibrant electric guitar is the key instrument here, accompanied by percussion and a ringing presence of pulsating tonalities to establish an ecstatic live piece.

David Wright. Regal tones delineate a pleasant tune laced with choral hints and whispery keys lurking beneath the more strident keyboard lead-riff.

Glenn Main. Piano joins electronic keys in a pastiche of fragile beauty that uplifts as it mesmerizes. The introduction of searing guitar midway elevates the piece’s inherent passion.

Ron Boots. Here, we have an epic (and winning) contribution-at 21 minutes in length. Rattly percussives tease vaporous electronics to coalesce into a soothing ambience that mounts some stately oomph with piano and additional keys, transforming the song into a lavishly emotional composition.

A worthwhile selection of international musicians, all displaying their skills at producing delicate electronic tuneage.

Various Artists - Four, the Truth

Artist: Various Artists
P: 1998
This is no. 4 in the ongoing, very successful series of electronic music inspired by the X-Files. Same as for the former parts, several teams of e-musicians teamed up in the studio, bringing adventurous music to life that wouldn't have happened otherwise. On "Four, The Truth" you this time can hear the stunning results from e.g. Ian Boddy, Vidna Obmana, Mario Schönwälder, Detlef Keller, Kees Aerts, Harold van der Heijden,Volker Rapp, Eric van der Heijden and of course Ron Boots. Those who already have the former three CD's, don't miss this one. If you're not yet familiar with it, do buy this one and become an addict of this unique concept music too!
"Four The Truth" was voted "Compilation Album of the Year" for 1998 by the listeners of the Canadian Radio show "The Nightflight" hosted by Scott Brodie and Matt Gilbo.

Various Artists - Out there lies the Truth

Artist: Various Artists
P: 1996
This is the first CD in the series of music inspired by the popular SF- series "The X-Files", being a overall succes untill now.
The album blends out with catchy electronic music ranging from dynamic and up-tempo tracks to fascinating, overwhelming soundtextures, ending with the great, dancelike track "The Machine" by Ron Boots and Eric van der Heijden.
In 1996, the good folks at Groove Unlimited, set out to do a CD of music inspired by the internationally popular television series, "The X-Files." Rather than leave the project to a single artiste, they gathered a group of talented electronicians and turned them loose in the studio. The result was "Out there Lies the Truth" (a very subtle pun). The CD features Ron Boots, Ralf Knappe-Heinbockel (a.k.a. Hemisphere), Johannes Munz, Robert Marselje, Kees Aerts, Jean Paul van Engelen, Eric van der Heijden and Harold van der Heijden.
The pairings were inspired and dynamic! The diversity of electronic styles delivers a melange of eclectic grabbers. This CD has it all - and then some! The styles range from dense atmospheres to rhythmic ambience to overt sequences.
The feelings evoked are mysterious, scary and ethereal. (Being only vaguely familiar with the show, I can only relate to the sci-fi atmosphere in general.) The soundscapes are majestic; the atmospheres are expansive; the experimental overtones are eerie.
I had feelings of impending doom juxtaposed by feelings of joy at new discoveries. The limits of my musical boundaries were stretched and I found myself listening again and again (and again!) to this electronic treasure.
Finally, the excellent production and sound quality of the album makes it a feast to listen to.

Various Artists - The Truth is Twisted

Artist: Various Artists
P: 1996 / 2010
Part 2 has again some new couples of talented nowadays e-musicians were formed, which led to some amazing new compostions in the studio. A wide range of atmospheric and more rhythmic/sequencer oriented music is featured throughout the album, which makes up for over an hour of excellent electronic music that shouldn't be missed. Kees Aerts, Ron Boots, Jean Paul van Engelen, Robert Marselje, Harold van der Heijden, Johannes Munz and Eric van der Heijden all returned for a second shot. Harold Teunissen, Volker Rapp, Alpha Wave Movement (nee Gregory Kyryluk) and Rene de Vreng joined them for the fun.
The chance to create new music beyond their self-defined boundaries appealed to these artistes too. The sci-fi arena allows for expansive atmospheres and experimental textures not normally heard in "mainstream" European sequencer e-music. Do not misunderstand! This CD has plenty of sequences and loads of rhythmic ambience. The unique blend of those styles with the minimalist atmospheres more often associated with American e-music gives this album high marks for originality and creativity. The CD also features some cool voice samples, presumably from the show.
