Bowles, Meg

Composer-synthesist Meg Bowles (b.1957) began her musical journey as flutist and completed formal studies in classical music performance at both Northwestern and Boston Universities.  Upon her graduation from Boston University in 1979, she chose to embark upon a career in investment banking, and eventually earned an M.B.A. in finance from Columbia University in 1984. After working as a derivatives trader for several years, she left the investment banking field in 1992 to devote more time to pursue advanced studies in shamanism, Jungian psychology, and psychoanalysis, and to create and produce electronic space music.
Meg's first two CDs, Inner Space and Solstice Dreams, were released in 1993, followed by critically-acclaimed Blue Cosmos in 1996.  During those years she developed a musical association with David Bilger, Principal Trumpet of the Philadelphia Orchestra, which resulted in several commissioned works for trumpet and synthesizer.  The first of these commissions, Night Sun Journey, was premiered by Mr. Bilger at the 1996 International Trumpet Guild Brassfest, followed by the premiere of Places Where Rivers Meet at Washington National Cathedral in 1997. These pieces and other works for trumpet and synth are included in the CD From the Dark Earth (1999), with David as the featured soloist.

Meg Bowles - Blue Cosmos

Artist: Meg Bowles
P: 1996
Blue Cosmos is a collection of electronic/ambient space music which evokes extraterrestrial soundscapes with mysterious sonic palettes and hauntingly beautiful melodies.
ABSOLUTE must-have for Echoes/Hearts of Space fans. Bowles, doing a super job of synthesizer work, gives us the "dark side" of this genre (with Jonn Serrie's Chronicles works being the complement).

Meg Bowles - Evensong Canticles for the Earth

Artist: Meg Bowles
P: 2018
Deep space drifts and rich harmonic textures reflect the timeless, ritual spaces of evening, a tribute to planet Earth.
"As the sky takes on the deep blue glow of evening, the time-bound bustle of day melts into the timeless dream space of night. For me, to take a walk in the waning light along the lake where I live has become an informal yet sacred ritual practice to process the day and re-center myself, either in solitude or with my husband, most often with a dog or two. My heart becomes calm when I listen to the evening songs of birds and the rustlings of animals, and I never tire of observing how the water glimmers and reflects the softening colors of dusk. Often I will find myself gazing at the sky, filled with gratitude for our planet Earth and for the gift of being present to witness all of her ever-changing beauty. These tracks all reflect bits and pieces of my own journey—including moments of joy as well as struggle—that have been evoked by this quiet but powerful time of evening, when darkness stretches across the land and the light moves to the other side of the earth." -Meg Bowles

Meg Bowles - From the Dark Earth

Artist: Meg Bowles
P: 1999
Keyboard wizard Meg Bowles has once again reinvigorated the space music genre, much as she did with her previous release, Blue Cosmos. From the Dark Earth is a recording that ventures far afield into the dark waters of futuristic space jazz. Some people I have discussed the CD with have said it sounds like "Miles Davis does Blade Runner." I'd say that comes close, but words are inaccurate to describe this fascinating and ultra-moody recording. If the Miles Davis allusion above didn't make it clear, this CD features not just Meg, but guest trumpet player David Bilger from the Philadelphia Orchestra as well. And he's not just on a couple of songs, either. The combination of Meg's swirling liquid black-as-night synths, her subtle muted tribal rhythms, and David's sometimes-muted, sometimes-not trumpet is mesmerizing. The net result of the two playing together is some of the most evocative and visual music I have heard in many years. The effect literally sent chills up my spine the first time I heard it.
The images that come to my mind when playing this CD may be different than most people (from what I have gathered). I view From the Dark Earth not as "outer" space music (despite titles like "neptune's daughter," "the forgotten valley" and "night sun journey") but as 21st century ambient space jazz, with a decidedly urban feel to it. The Blade Runner reference above alludes to those Vangelis pieces in the film's soundtrack where he also used bluesy trumpet over his lush keyboards. Meg and David have done some of the same thing, except they have dialed both the mystery and the "smoke" up a bit. Where Vangelis' music was neo-romantic in a retro-noir way, Meg and David have their feet planted firmly in the future.
Picture, if you will, city streets at 3 am, wet with just-fallen rain. Neon lights fizzle and crackle, their glare reflected in the wet black of the pavement. Somewhere, a spinner whizzes by above you. Distant conversations bounce off the brick walls of alley buildings, somehow intensifying your solitude. You belong to nothing but the night. You're desperate for a bar, where you can drown the bad taste of the city's bitterness in your mouth. That's what this music is about for me. It speaks of loneliness, despair, and wandering adrift in a sea of darkness that both comforts and strangles you. All of this is wrapped up in Meg's awesome space music flourishes'lush lower register synths, subtle hypnotic beats, washes of keyboards that are both warm and inviting and yet strangely disturbing.
Every cut on this CD is masterful, so I won't single any out. Instead, I'll just close by saying the Meg and David have delivered a modern classic and a recording that redefines the limits of space music.
From the Dark Earth is a milestone and it is an absolutely essential for sophisticated space and ambient music fans everywhere.

Meg Bowles - Pilgrimage

Artist: Meg Bowles
P: 2022
The soundscapes in this album evoke both earthly environments as well as dreamlike spaces not of this earth. Textural elements characteristic of both ambient music and space music are interwoven into a cinematic, orchestral style, creating a narrative arc that takes listeners up into vast, sweeping spaces as well as down into quiet, more intimate ones.

Meg Bowles - The Shimmering Land

Artist: Meg Bowles
P: 2013

Meg Bowles follows-up her excellent ambient project "A Quiet Light" with "The Shimmering Land", which invites you to journey along half-forgotten vine-covered paths, into those 'shadowy places' only hinted-at in ancient legends, and lore. A musical excursion across the mythical Avalons, or deep forays into classical vision-quests of half-forgotten dreamworlds. You will experience this, and much more; listening to "The Shimmering Land", and wonder is it really there, or just a mirage? Your set sail upon the 'Undalant Sea' where you start your odyssey to the very end of reality. A siren's song beckons you into 'The Sweetness of Mist' just ahead of those fog-bound, hidden shoals. This is primal ambient fare, much in the same vein, as that sound composed in Thom Brennan's excellent "Mist" album. All of this is very cinematic, and invites some inevitable comparisons to Jon Jenkins, and Dave Luxton's ambient projects as well. Meg Bowles, is one of the top female composers in the ambient realm, along with fellow artists: Constance Demby, Stephanie Sante, and Asmodelle. She first came to my attention by way of the excellent "Blue Cosmos" CD, which puts her in the rarefied company of such heavyweights as: Jonn Serrie, Max Corbacho, Dan Pound, and Rudy Adrian. "The Shimmering Land" is in my opinion her best offering to date. Highly Recommended.

Meg Bowles - Voices from the Ethereal Forest

Artist: Meg Bowles
P: 2022
Forests are ambient communities of textures, sounds, and lifeforms, all of which interact in a miraculous web, vibrating and dancing with the elemental forces of nature. They sustain life for the planet, bear silent witness to history, and form containing spaces which can attract and hold the emotional energies of all sentient beings, from fear and grief all the way to delight and awe. Forests are also storytellers. When immersed in the woods, we also become woven into a majestic yet intimate tapestry of light and shadow, becoming part of the story. When I was a child, I would often imagine that I could hear the trees sing after a deep, cleansing rain. There were no words, simply the sense of an emerging cluster of sound, radiating what I imagined to be relief and gratitude for the nourishing waters that fed their roots. The idea of a singing forest is what piqued my curiosity about integrating the human voice and especially vocal ensembles into ambient music in a way that honors the primacy of texture. Voices emerge slowly—often beginning before awareness—and then recede, much as the constantly shifting textures of the forest do, all creating an atmosphere of quiet, radiant timelessness. This album invites the listener into a verdant, ambient oasis, where layers of subtle vocal textures form a living tapestry evoking the beauty and magic of forests past. Impressionistic and introspective, this music is also a tribute to the forests which—whether through natural aging, climate change, or destructive human interaction—no longer exist in this realm.
