Lynne, Bjorn

Bjørn Arild Lynne (born December 31, 1966) (also known as "Dr. Awesome" and "Divinorum") is a Norwegian sound engineer and music composer, now living and working in Stavern, Norway. He has been widely known as a tracker music composer under the name "Dr. Awesome/Crusaders" in the late 1980s–early 90s when he released numerous tunes in MOD format and created music for some Amiga games. His work during that time period was mostly released into the demoscene world. In 1995 Bjørn moved to England and started working for the video game company Team17 as a sound designer and composer. In June 2005 Bjørn moved back to Norway and now works as a freelance composer. Bjørn is known for his soundtracks for the Worms and Seven Kingdoms games as well as his own albums in various genres, from fantasy-medieval to progressive rock or even trance (released under the pseudonym "Divinorum"). His tunes have also been used in several TV-shows/movies.

Bjorn Lynne - Beneath another Sky

Artist: Bjorn Lynne
P: 2006
The latest in a long line of synth albums from this electronic musician whose work has been of a quite high consistency for a long time, but not without its lapses along the way. Which makes the fact that this is his most accomplished album for a while, to be regarded as a welcome addition to your listening pleasure.
Using an arsenal of synths, sequencers, electronic (or programmed) drums and guitars, this is clearly a case of a musician who has listened to and absorbed over thirty years of synth and progressive music, and has created music that is most definitely his own, while at the same time exhibiting a lot of qualities from the last three decades of synth music greats but at no time making it so obvious that you say "that bit sounds like……." As a result, you have here a twelve track, seventy nine minute album that remains consistent throughout. Most tracks revolve around an ocean of rhythms, often using beefy sequencer lines or strong-sounding electronic drums, while on top are layered string synths, lead synth melodies, flowing lead synths and extra rhythmic additions to propel the tracks to even greater heights. While full of tunes and melodies, it's also full of feeling and atmosphere, with the rhythms providing a backbone that keeps it all together while at the same time not at any point diminishing the effect of the lead work. Most of the tracks are completely addictive and yet at the same time, strong and distinctive, so that you can be into anything from Jarre and Vangelis through Tangerine Dream and Pickford, to Oldfield and Pink Floyd, and still get maximum enjoyment out of this wholly instrumental and quite epic album." - Andy Garibaldi, UK

Bjorn Lynne - Colony

Artist: Bjorn Lynne
P: 2002
What a pleasant surprise this CD was! I have known and enjoyed Bjorn's music for some time, he was around even before we started Neu Harmony. The only reason we haven't stocked his stuff in the past is that even though it was highly electronic it tended to lean a little too much in the direction of progressive rock for the 'typical' SMD customer. Here however the balance has switched much more in the direction of EM.
This is evident right from the early moments of the opener 'Messages'. A wonderful exciting sequence emerges out of solar winds and soft pads. Then wham! In comes a crunching rhythm. The lead line is real air keyboard stuff. Other superb melodic elements will keep your head nodding as yet more stunning lead lines come one after another. Electronic Music really doesn't get much better than this. Its powerful, infectious and exciting all at the same time. Whether you are into Pickford, Shreeve, T Bass UK etc etc you just have to have this track in your collection. We ride into 'Endless Possibilities' on the back of moody electric guitar. More excellent lead lines come in accompanied by a high hat rhythm as we start to rock. The drums thunder forward and electronic pulsations simply spew from the speakers. The pace is slowed from time to time just to be picked up again with some axe man guitar. Prog Elements do come through on this piece but the electronic elements are so strong. Think of Eloy meeting Scott Mosher (without the AOR element).
'Hyperdrive Simuli' again surges forward with a no nonsense rhythmic backing, Sci Fi 'War of the Worlds' type bleeps and whooshes giving it an other worldly feel. You can just imagine hurtling through space faster than the speed of light. Again the guitar work is fairly heavy heaping excitement on excitement. There is a very peaceful start to 'No Looking Back' it then develops into a mid tempo chugger. The melodies are fantastic, beautiful even, reminding me very much of Andy Pickford. 'Ruins of an Alien Civilization' is a quirky gently rhythmic little number which slows the pace further and leads us into the magnificent 'Mind of the Visionary'. It has a real epic feel to it. The melodies are again immense. Sure, slight prog touches return from time to time but its the way the lead line keeps exploding from the speakers which grabbed me most. From the half way mark it develops real attitude and oomph particularly in the bass department.
'Ypsilon' is another short track, this time rather delicate and almost orchestral. 'Neuralnet' surges into life with a tinkling sequence / rhythm combination. A lead line with an almost echoing vocoded quality to it takes us forward. Another excellent sequence takes over for 'Faces of Fatality'. Yet more superb leads comes in, the prog elements however are probably more obvious on this track than any other but they work so well with flashing electric guitar really doing the business.
'Crystal Vista' returns us to pure delicate EM, a lovely little sequence bouncing in the background as another rather gentle Pickfordesque lead line floats over the top. 'One Step to Paradise' is a rather optimistic number with many lead flourishes and in the second half some belting electric guitar combing well with a melodic sequence. Mention must also be made of the outstanding artwork containing some of the best images I have ever seen in a CD package. Cosmic scenes, spacecraft and alien planets - they are all there easily eclipsing Chris Frank's Babylon 5 pictures. (DL)

Bjorn Lynne - Crystal Horizon

Artist: Bjorn Lynne
P: 2009
This album took me quite a long time to compose and produce. A couple of the tracks date back a couple of years, to shortly after the release of "Beneath Another Sky". On "Crystal Horizon" I have tried to combine and vary my different favourite styles whilst still trying to keep it nicely flowing as an album, a whole, rather than just individual tracks. I hope I've managed it, to some degree.
The title track, "Crystal Horizon", was born out of a burst of inspiration I got from obtaining a software plugin that precisely emulates the old Korg Wavestation synthesizer. "Voyager" was meant as a sort of follow-up to my track "Into the Void" from back in 1997. I wanted to revisit the theme of the person drifting into unknown space.
There are also some more upbeat tracks, touching on progressive electronica with melodic elements. All in all, I hope you'll enjoy this album as a whole.
Thanks to Leif Liljeqvist and Alex Storer for help with the cover artwork.

Bjorn Lynne - Dreamstate

Artist: Bjorn Lynne
P: 1995 / 2004
This is the favourite CD by Bjorn Lynne. It's a great electronica album featuring some really great songs like Progress and Digital Phoenix, which are some of his best songs in general. A favourite track on this album has to be the bonus track though. The "Now What Medley" is really cool to listen to if you ever heard Bjorn's early Amiga modules, and has tons of great "tiny tunes" in it.

Bjorn Lynne - Montage

Artist: Bjorn Lynne
P: 1994
Montage was Bjorn Lynne’s second CD, self-financed and self-published in January 1994.
Stylewise, ”Montage” is a slightly more daring album than the previous ”Hobbits & Spaceships”. The 10 tracks contain a wide mixture of styles and sounds, and although the album was produced entirely on synthesizers and effects, it is easy to hear Bjorn Lynne’s love for symphonic rock starting to shine through, especially on songs like ”Montage” and "Communion”; both of which are long tracks moving through several stages of ever changing moods. There are also some more down-to-earth simply melodic pieces like ”Head Held High” and ”Fantastic Voyage ’94”. And, there are some slightly more experimental pieces like the futuristic and very cyber-oriented ”The Spirit of Mechanica” as well as the symphonically ambient ”Enlightenment Through Fear”.

Bjorn Lynne - Nanoteknika

Artist: Bjorn Lynne
P: 2009
This 15-track album contains electronic, melodic, upbeat and positive music produced with about 80% electronics and 20% guitars. I guess the music is pretty much inspired by the old "Dr.Awesome" style from the demo-scene waaay back, as well as game soundtracks etc. There's a lot of use of rhythmic delay effects, pattern based composing and classic synth sounds.
With Nanoteknika I've tried to make an album that's never boring, quickly moving from one upbeat track to the next. The music is positive and vibrant, but without exactly being techno. For the most part it's quite melodic. Good for driving :-). At least, that's what I was going for. I hope you'll enjoy it.
Many thanks to Aleksander Grochocki for playing additional guitar on 4 of the tracks, to Adam Skorupa (aka Skorpic from the demo-scene) for co-producing 5 of the tracks with me, and to Tobias Richter for the CD artwork.

Bjorn Lynne - Quiet Places

Artist: Bjorn Lynne

Melancholic, relaxing, dreamy with just a few dissonant undertones to make it interesting.
Those looking for background music for yoga, tai-chi or any other similar activity will find this album perfect. Those looking for an escape from the hustle and bustle of a busy urban life will find this album perfect. Those just looking for peace and quiet will find this album perfect.
It´s like a dream flying through the air, wanting to be touched with your hands and beeing saved in your heart. You feel some kind of sadness and lost but on the other hand, you long for the rays of the sun to let you lift up again.

Bjorn Lynne - Relaxation Music Series (8 CD Set)

Artist: Bjorn Lynne
P: 2008
Bjorn Lynne has produced a series of one-hour Ambient music recordings for Relaxation, Fantasy, Dreaming and warm ambience.
These recordings are each one album, as a single 60-minute track.
Unlike some other "overly sweet" relaxation music, Bjorn has tried to go for a warmer, more ambient and deeper sound. Each 60 minute track is a full composition with very little repetition. The recordings have been used in several commercial media projects including Planetariums, Diving videos, Nature videos, Art Exhibitions, Television programs, Hypnotherapy discs and more.
Use these tracks to play in the background while working to help you concentrate, to go to sleep to, to dream yourself away while taking a hot bath, or just to chill out on the sofa or while reading a book.

This is the complete Set of all 8 CDs that are released in this series.

Bjorn Lynne - Return to Witchwood

Artist: Bjorn Lynne
P: 2003
Like the original Witchwood, this album is full of atmospheric music that conveys many different kinds of moods and emotions. The music is rich, warm, relaxing, mysterious and magical - it really does feel like you are taken on a journey into some kind of magical fantasy world. At times, the style of the music does sound a bit like music from the Timura trilogy (which is no bad thing) but it definately captures the feel of the original Witchwood music pefectly, so fans of the original won't be disappointed. All in all, a great album that is a pleasure to listen to. Bjorn Lynne approaches New Instrumental Music, Symphonic Rock and Synth-Pop, with a special talent to shape his compositions with a remarkably expressive strength that we can perceive from the very start of the album to the second it ends. It is probably one of those albums where Lynne has imprinted his personality the most as a musician, as well as his own feelings as a person. Most remarkable is the ease with which he is so skilled in sculpting the sound ambiences that evoke impressive backgrounds and situations. The medieval touches, the classical and the ethnic shades introduced in certain passages, all of them are masterful. In its global consideration, the music does attract the attention of the listener easily indeed, and submerges us in the sound adventure of a magic theme the artist proposes us in this magnificient album.

Bjorn Lynne - Revive

Artist: Bjorn Lynne
P: 2000
Lynne acknowledges that the music on 'Revive' is more immediate than some of the darker, deeper and 'more thought out' music elsewhere in his formidable catalogue. He has brought all his increased technical skills together to revitalise some old ideas and produce a CD on which his enthusiasm shines through. Recommended.
Apart from 2 lovely piano interludes 'Empty Spaces 1 & 2' most tracks in this 72 minute CD are in the 6 minute range and equate in style, if comparisons are required, to Tangerine Dream (with more emphasis on guitar of course!)
For this CD, he re-arranged and re-recorded brand new versions of some of his 'hits' from his early years.
Classic Dr.Awesome tracks such as "12th Warrior", "Space Deliria", "Bridge to the Universe", "Moongazer", "Empty Spaces" and "Niagara" have been combined with today's studio sound, live instruments, session musicians and digital recording.

Bjorn Lynne - Soothe

Artist: Bjorn Lynne
P: 2004
In these eight themes of atmospheric Ambient Music, Bjorn Lynne takes the audience through a musical voyage along the heavenly shores. All the pieces are a clear sample of the talent of the artist. "Lucid Dreams" has an incomparable magic. "Sun Willow" is most remarkable because of its great strength. "The True You" has a very special emotional warmth. The music is slow, yet not static, and has a certain rhythmic structure. With respect to the instruments used, the synthesizers have quite a leading role. Spontaneity and sensibility would perhaps be the most adequate words to refer to this work.

Bjorn Lynne - The Gods Awaken

Artist: Bjorn Lynne
P: 2001
The Gods Awaken can be described as flawlessly beautiful. Unlike most artists Bjorn hasn't created a few great tracks and padded out the whole 75 minutes with mediocre works; he has invested 110% into every track. It sounds phenominal, unequalled in context within the music industry for scope, contrast, balance, and melodic, rythmic and harmonic content. Bjorn has completely superceded Vangelis, Jarre and Oldfield to become the premiere electro-acoustic composer. With ability like this, Bjorn should give up the computer game work and develop his outstanding talents as a composer of music, not soundtracks.

Bjorn Lynne - The Void

Artist: Bjorn Lynne
P: 1997
The Void has elements of progressive/symphonic rock as well as more contemporary electronic, ambient and rock styles. It is a concept album about a space trip that went horribly wrong - there is a vibe, a certain something that is hard to put your finger on, which gives the album a deep atmosphere. Fans have been known to play this album again and again - on loud volume and with all the lights out.

Bjorn Lynne - Witchwood

Artist: Bjorn Lynne
P: 1996
Excellent medieval/fantasy-style music. Especially 'Witchwood' and 'Fairy Woods. Witchwood is a mostly quiet "back to nature" kind of thing, complete with the sounds of water running and birds singing. What really makes this album a joy to listen to, is the number of small "bridges", connecting the various songs. The music seamlessly flows into and out of the different parts, while it all appears to hang together. One theme is played in variuos incarnations, giving you the feeling that that it's all building up to a rousing finale. When you find yourself comfortably into the laid back feeling of this album, Lynne suddenly surprises you with some really symphonic arrangements, making the album a joy to listen to.

Bjorn Lynne - Wolves of the Gods

Artist: Bjorn Lynne
P: 2000
Bjorn manages to be exciting and original without ever alienating the listener. He has tunes in abundance - even the guitar lines are singable. 'Wolves' is probably his best album so far. A heady mixture of ambient moods, cinematic soundscapes, and heavy metal. If you like none of these styles, you still may love this album, for there is no simple way to describe Bjorn's music.
The last two minutes of 'Shapechanger' alone are worth the price of the CD. Yet there are sixty-eight other minutes to be entranced by. Be transported.
