Kubusschnitt - The Case

Artist: Kubusschnitt
P: 1999
Andy Bloyce, Tom Coppens, Ruud Heij and Jens Peschke may not be exactly household names, but they are gaining some notoriety in certain small circles. Most if not all of them were involved in some way in the excellent compilations, "GoldTri Volume One" and "GoldTri Volume Two." If you revel in the classic style of Tangerine Dream and similar bands, then you are in for a real treat. "The Case" delivers the goods in style.
Lengthy sequencer excursions dominate "The Case," with only one of the five tracks being shorter than 13 minutes. Within each song, central themes emerge around ever-evolving layers of synths. Like Redshift, Radio Massacre International, Ron Boots and others of late, Kubusschnitt has mastered the style of old Tangerine Dream without simply copying them. The music combines the best of electronic music styles from about 1975 to 1985, with perhaps slightly more emphasis on the former. "Techno Café" reminds us that things have changed since then, and that this is music for the nineties, albeit perhaps in the spirit of the seventies. The standout track is "The Soul of the Polymoog," sure to appeal to Ashra fans, with its excellent backdrop of sequencers playing off some very nice lead guitar work. Andy Bloyce's guitar playing is a fine homage to Manuel Gottsching. The sequencer parts remind me of Michael Hoenig's classic work, "Departure from the Northern Wasteland." This release is almost certain to appeal to electronic music purists everywhere.

Lambert + Parsick - Trancesession

Artist: Lambert + Parsick
P: 1995

This CD presents a combination of Lambert Ringlage’s rhythmic style and Stephen Parsick’s more cosmic approach to EM. “Back to basics” seems to be the message on the sleeve though "no midi, no computers, no fake" is perhaps a little extreme. The two parts of ‘Voyage to Nowhere’ open and close the CD, and part 1 has me hunting through the credits for Michael Garrison’s name such is the similarity to his trademark loping sequences and dense synth textures. Part 2 varies the theme only slightly and features some discordant improvised leads. ‘Trancemission’ is another two parter with the 20 minute part 1 again containing a barrage of impressive sequences, and but for the lead synths occasionally sounding like an episode of the Sooty and Sweep show this track really kicks. Enter part 2 and the sequences are if anything even more powerful. More frenzied leads but by now you have no choice other than to be carried along by the avalanche of sound rupturing the speakers. The raw enthusiasm is infectious. ‘Star Motion’ is the remaining piece and if you want an 11 minute pastiche of the album as a whole, here it is. Wear a seat belt though. I have nothing but admiration for Lambert Ringlage and Stephen Parsick after hearing this album. This is powerhouse EM with no frills, no hang-ups and no apologies. They simply go for it and though the music is about as subtle as a sledge-hammer, and it does suffer from lead-suffocation at times, it’s impossible not to be impressed. Buy it and give your ears a spring clean.

Lambert - Dimensions of Dreams

Artist: Lambert
P: 1995
This CD from 1995 features 73 minutes of spry electronic music, Lambert is joined by Andreas Paeth on guitar on one track. Strict keyboard strokes generate lively melodies here, embellished by broader textures that held cement the pieces into congenial wholes. Jubilant riffs unfold with heavenly tonalities providing airy contrasts. At other times, the melodies exhibit grimmer undertones. Meticulous E-perc enhances this solemn disposition with languid rhythms. Inevitably, however, Lambert's optimism overwhelms these grave sentiments, coloring the harmonics with lighter tones and smirking electronic effects that loosen all tension with psychic tickling. While other tracks utilize these dense, deep-toned beats to more frolicsome purpose, accomplishing rhythms that lift the spirits with their energetic patter. At this point, Paeth's guitar injects a fiery blaze of passion that send the tune soaring to stratospheric altitudes. And when the guitar pauses, Lambert's keyboards perpetuate that lofty sense with vivacious chords that defy the pull of gravity. This enforced levitation is a dominant aspect in much of the music on this CD. The tendency for upward movement can be considered a signature trait of Lambert's, found in the majority of his compositions. Dreams are usually quite subjective perceptions, but Lambert has found a way to translate his somnambulant experiences into music that is conducive to objective interpretations.

Logic System - Venus

Artist: Logic System
P: 1993

There's some overlap between this release and some Yellow Magic Orchestra material; no wonder since Logic System has worked as an engineer with YMO. Cool 80s Japanese synthpop, personally prefer this over YMO. Also the sytle reminds of Tomitas work around the 80s.

Lutz Ulbrich - Kurzmusiken

Artist: Lutz Ulbrich
P: 2001
Inspired by the success of Ash Ra Tempel's retrospective collection, The Private Tapes, Ulbrich decided to mine his solo archives as well, result is this 2-CD assortment. Mostly in bite-sized chunks of a minute or two, the collection covers a wide array of material, from minimal electronic experimentations to straightforward guitar-based tracks. There are 50 tracks in all, each seamlessly fading into the next, like a series of short stories. Though many of the segments seem like undeveloped ideas, there is a charm in the simplicity of it. Nicely detailed liner notes tell the history behind selected tracks, with lots of interesting photos. Whereas The Private Tapes serves as a time capsule for the seventies, Kurzmusiken is from 1985 forward. Though Ulbrich says he chose tracks for musical character over sound quality, the quality is generally solid. Trying to describe individual tracks could fill pages. Everything from guitar to vintage synths and even banjo is featured. The style ranges from quirky catchy tuneful songs like "Moabit," which runs right into "Mystisch," a textural, unstructured, atmospheric piece of space music. This then runs into the aforementioned banjo in "Passant," a light playful tune. These three tracks to open the second disc give a good example of the wide range of material presented, all with a certain panache that make this thoroughly fun to sit back and experience.

Ma Ja Le + Vir Unis - Imaginarium

Artist: Ma Ja Le + Vir Unis
P: 1998
If there is a soul inside electronic music, Ma Ja Le has it. This album is sombre, introspective music that drifts along in the upper stratosphere. This music is the breath inside a whisper that leaves you wanting more.  Lots of dark tribal rhythms and also some smooth ambient syth stuff without the beats. This even has nice guitar treatments similar to David Pearce. It's a little dark - but nicely so. Each piece is different and creative.

Magec - Ritual Reality

Artist: Jens Buchert (Magec)
P: 1996
No one suspects the chill-out ambient musician Jens Buchert behind this project of the IC digit label.
So he made this CD back in 1996 and published there a sort of chill-out ethnic New Age CD, which still stands by its melody and chord changes.

The Dutch musician has recorded these fantastic pieces with his huge analogue synthesizer park. They are always close to musicians you know and revere: Vangelis and Jarre. But the pieces are all new and composed by him.
