Ian Boddy + Ron Boots - Phase 3

Artist: Ian Boddy, Ron Boots & Harold Van Der Heijden
P: 1997

Phase 3" is a live collaboration from Ron Boots, Ian Boddy and Harold van der Heijden. This trio has contributed much to the European ambient electronica scene through their Groove Records associations in the 1990's. Ian and Ron are legitimate superstars. Harold is a master ambient percussionist. This album has it all! The music ranges from dark and lush atmospheric ambient minimalism to up-tempo rhythmic ambience. The superstar and master tags are not wasted here. Ian, Ron and Harold perform to the nth degree. The album encompasses all that live ambience should be - introspective, challenging and diverse.

Ian Boddy - Continuum

Artist: Ian Boddy
P: 1996
This 2CD set is edited from a 7 hour improvised performance Boddy gave in an art gallery during a Comic Art Festival within a sci-fi like setting. Many see this album as the bridge between Boddy's earlier, more melodic styles and the ambient textural approach he developed leading up to the formation of his DiN label in 1999.
The original pressing is now out of print but it has been reissued as a high quality CDr with the original sleeve.

Ian Boddy - Drive

Artist: Ian Boddy
P: 1991
The second release on Surrel to Real by Ian Boddy featured Julian Maynard-Smith on electronic wind synth. Drive's 9 tracks have a more structured, compact form than Odyssey but still retain Boddy's melodic style from this period.

Ian Boddy - Odyssey

Artist: Ian Boddy
P: 1989
This album heralds from 1989 and if memory serves was Ian’s first ever CD release. It marked the start of his mid period, finishing with the classic ‘Uncertainty Principle’ and ‘the Deep’. Unlike those albums however this one has never seen a re-release so of all the post ‘Climb’ recordings it is by far the rarest. But what of the music? Well you can’t beat a good old crashing sound to start an album and boy does the opening of ‘Hyperion’ crash! Then, in marked contrast, we get some lovely floating, soothing pads with little tinkling effects. A gorgeous plucked string melody takes us forward. Things become even more beautiful as we progress. A melancholy melody soars into the heights in uplifting Vangelis fashion. This in turn is replaced by plucked strings and then an almost John Dyson style lead line. ‘A Time Remembered’ is just as beautifully as its predecessor with acoustic guitar and flutey synth over exquisite synth washes.
‘Amazonia’ starts with appropriate rainforest type effects, ethnic flute and percussion. The pace picks up with a gamelan lead line then more flutey synth. Just after the half way mark it is all change with a sort of medieval rhythm that reminded me a little of one of the tracks off ‘Phoenix’. Very infectious and joyous stuff. ‘Masquerade’ provides us with more acoustic guitar and layer after layer of excellent melodies, which continue through, to ‘Lammergeyer’ that has a feel not too dissimilar to the earlier ethnic tinged ‘Amazonia’. Things take a darker and almost film music turn with the title track. Ethereal pads mix with orchestral and organ sounds to give a large epic feel. ‘Chameleon’ is a much more conventionally rhythmic affair, slowly winding up the pace until we are belting along, lead lines flying over the top. Ideal for air keyboard playing. It has to be said that this is Ian’s most tuneful and quite frankly undemanding album taking his earlier style and adding ethnic and even chamber music influences. It is the antitheses to what he was later to produce on his own DiN label. (DL)

Ian Boddy - The Deep

Artist: Ian Boddy
P: 1994
The Deep is probably the closest Boddy's ever come to a 'concept' album. He has made no secret of the fact that several of the pieces are heavily influenced by the James Cameron film The Abyss and indeed the opening track which fades in with the sound of a submarine sonar perfectly sets the scene with it's eerie crescendo of voices. There are many orchestral influences on evidence as well with tracks such as In the Realm of Poseidon and Sub-Aquiem lending an air of grandeur to the proceedings. Other tracks such as The Deep, Sirens Call and Re-Emergence add to the overall dark atmosphere of the album although there is a bit of light relief in the shape of Aquanaut and Flow Current Flow.
The opening four tracks were performed to spectacular effect at concerts at The Derby Guildhall and also at the first EMMA Music Festival during 1994.

Index ID - Expedition

Artist: Index ID
P: 2001
Elektrolux e1100101cd
After the previously released ‚Schlafphase’ was one of the best selling albums in the Elektrolux history, we’re now proud to present Index ID’s second longplayer entitled ‚Expedition’. Following on from the still large 12“ ‚Horizont’, comes this longawaited new album release, and be sure it is one to die for. Index ID aka Ralf Uhrlandt doesn’t need a special introduction so we won’t bother. Eleven tracks that epitomize Uhrlandt’s very own sound and cover a wide range from several trippin’ slow jams and downbeat tunes, swinging midtempo grooves and minimal techhouse business. An album that takes the genre defying Index ID style even further in a collision of many different ingredients. Even some string laden soundscapes and afro-tronic influences come in, engulfing some tracks more or less dreamily. Then again you have this overall dubby and atmospheric feel giving this album an added dimension while making way for some delicious funktified rhythms. ‚Expedition’ is a sensational release of exceptional quality that both soothes your ears and still keeps that feet firmly on the dancefloor. One listen and you’ll know why...

J. Arif Verner - A Vision beyond Light

Artist: J. Arif Verner
P: 1996
From the Spotted Peccary Label, one would expect an ambient/tribal sound. Verner moves away from the tribal aspect and gives a quality "Hearts of Space"-style space music effort. Bravo!! Because of his use of MIDI guitar, some passages sound like the works of Jeff Pearce. However, Verner's synthesizer and the use of many more layers of sound give this work a step up on Pearce's compositions. Wonderful addition to any space music fan's library. If you like Char-El, Meg Bowles, or Jeff Pearce, you'll like this CD. A fine work to relax by, especially under the stars.

James Bernard - Atmospherics

Artist: james Bernard
P: 1994
James Bernard's Atmospherics is one of the best ambient works of 1994. Rising High delivered some excellent ambient and trance during those days. This is widely known as one of the best.
Euph starts the cd with a deep, ominous and eerie beginning to what will be a wonderful trip into space. Complete Nonsense changes that. Your ship just went on remote auto pilot and you get redirected into a sci-fi interference like you landed on the wrong planet. Last minute of that song bridging to Helix sounds like Brian Enos Apollo release. Helix takes you out of harms way and back on your original mission. As it floats you about in awe it then cuts and Phosphorous begins to build. More eerie sci-fi melodics and voice samples like "it just won't stop singing in my head" and "the most difficult thing I've ever tried is to clear the mind". Acid line comes out over bassline nearly making this a trance track without the beat. Thankfully it does not here. Mars Rain is exactly how it sounds. As the song progresses the thunder sounds like bombs a little bit which makes the track even more eerie. Lost in It starts with goose bump keyboard tones and builds to a majestic peak and you reach your mission objective. FM rewards you for the heavy listening of Lost in It and easies you down to take a breather and enjoy your trip. Odyssey gives you time to reflect and recount your journey in your journal. But you are not alone...

Janek Schaefer - Le Petit Theatre de Mercelis

Artist: Janek Schaefer
P: 2002
The third CD in the new Audioshpere series is a 50 minute live recording from a set Schaefer performed in Brussels earlier this year. Though he is still best known for his notorious invention of the three-armed Tri-Phonic Turntable, the self styled sound designer and architect has evidently broadened his repertoire. Most of the audio lansdcapes here don't immediately sound like they were sourced from record decks, although there are plently of queasy, Philioments. The live dynamic is clear - the slow movement through different zones is managed with a neat sense of natural timing. Fogbanks of ethereal drones panned vigorously from speaker to speaker seague into nostalgic, melodic fragments, while playful crackles and vinyl squeals punctuate the passages just when you are drifting off.
The CD comes in a Super Jewel Case.

Jeff Johnson + Brian Dunning - Songs from Albion

Artist: Jeff Johnson + Brian Dunning
P: 1992
This album is a mix between Patrick O'Hearn and Deuter. Melodic Flute and Synthesizer music.
Remember classic concept albums like Pink Floyd's DARK SIDE OF THE MOON, or Yes' TALES FROM TOPOGRAPHIC OCEANS? Washington state keyboardist Jeff Johnson and Irish flutist Brian Dunning harken back to those days with albums like Songs of Albion and Byzantium that use books as imagistic launch pads.
