Max Corbacho - Ars Lucis

Artist: Max Corbacho
P: 2009
Max Corbacho returns with a long-form disc of his signature lighter-than-air drifts in Ars Lucis. Corbacho’s constructs float in higher registers, airy choral sounds occasionally lifted by a bass rumble updraft. This is, as the cover art suggests, a soundtrack for watching light filter through stained glass in a sacred space. Notes spiral angelically upwards in a slow dance, gracefully filling the air. There’s a delicate feel to the work here, as though a single touch would shatter it into glistening fragments. Ars Lucis is a disc that truly comes into its own when played as a low-volume loop, and it’s an ideal meditation CD. Although split into seven tracks, it plays as a seamless flow. The music here clearly resonates with Steve Roach’s influence on Corbacho’s style—I hear it in the slow-motion layering, the depth and soft elegance of sound that calls to mind the Quiet Music series. (I also hear hushed memories of Giles Reaves’ Sacred Space.) But influences aside, this is true-to-form Corbacho, with all the gentle beauty he’s exhibited in his past releases. It’s a welcome return from a talented ambient artist.

Michael Stearns - Chronos

Artist: Michael Stearns
P: 1984

One of the best soundtracks ever made by Stearns and his Serge Modular System, with a very unique sound.
Taking the familiar conventions of time-lapse cinematography to a transcendent level of artistic achievement, filmmaker Ron Fricke circled the globe to make Chronos, a stunning 70-millimeter time-lapse tour of natural and man-made wonders. The entire film has the enhanced, hyper-realistic quality of a laser-etched photograph, and by using special cameras and motion-control photographic techniques, Fricke and his technically expert crew were able to create mesmerizing images guaranteed to spark any viewer's sense of awe and wonder. Accompanied by the hypnotic music of Michael Stearns, this visual journey takes the viewer on a tour of over 50 locations on nearly every continent of the world, including explorations of Paris, the Vatican, the Egyptian pyramids, the African veldt, and many more stunning vistas. The cumulative effect is the feeling that the world--from the busiest metropolis to the most serenely remote wilderness landscape--is dictated by "chronos," the rhythm of time to which all living things must submit. Like Koyaanisquatsi and Baraka, this is one of those eye-candy films that was conceived according to its specific theme, so it's not only a soothing visual experience but a thought-provoking study of our fascinating planet.

Michel Huygen + Fernando Jimenez Del Oso - Astralia

Artist: Michel Huygen & Fernando Jimenez Del Oso
P: 1995
Michel Huygen (Neuronium) and the researcher and publisher of enigmatic themes Fernando Jiménez del Oso have united their artistic efforts in this unusual album. Huygen has composed the music, whereas doctor Jiménez del Oso has written some texts he recites with his suggestive, mysterious voice, in some passages of the release.
Both in the musical and in the literary aspects, the theme that has inspired the release is the astral voyage beyond the borders that separate the earthly from the cosmic, life from death. It is presented as a sonic adventure, between the majestic and the enigmatic.
Jiménez del Oso describes a series of paranormal experiences, his voice being distorted by means of atypical sonic effects. Astralia also has the peculiarity of showing the darkest, most disturbing musical aspects in Huygen. Although he does not completely abandon the line of his last albums, much of the music is icy, ghostly, radically electronic. There is a passage of violent percussion that appears to re-create the very same dance of death.

Michel Huygen - Intimo

Artist: Michel Huygen
P: 1990
The album, one of the most extraordinary releases in his career given the extreme sensitivity of the themes it contains. Intimo is, no doubt, one of the most emotional works by Huygen, a work that cannot leave any listener unconcerned. Inside the jacket cover are several personal reflections that accompany each track. This is indeed a release that destroys all the epithets of coldness that anyone could attribute to the electronic music of our days.
Original digital recording made by Michel Huygen between October 1989 and April 1990.

Mind Over Matter - Under the Stars

Artist: Mind Over Matter
P: 2000

The performances of February 1999 were so excellent, that it would have been a shame not to release anything from these concerts. Thankfully Klaus decided to release a second live album by Mind over Matter in 2000. "Under the Stars" (IC 87 2345-2) included four of the tracks of the stunning Erkrath-shows, albeit under slightly different titles (like "A Night in Mogul's Garden" and "Mellow Kathmandu"). Two other tracks from other concerts (featuring Michael Grüterich and Stephen Parsick) were added to the album: "La Vie (The Dance of Life)" and "The world of Koto".

  • Mellotron – Klaus Hoffmann-Hoock
  • Synthesizer [Vintage] – Stephen Parsick (tracks: 5)

Mind-Flux - Konception of Space

Artist: Mind-Flux
P:
1997
What is space? How would one answer that question in musical terms? With profoundly astral electronics, fanciful keyboards, and determined E-perc. At least, these are the chosen vehicles for Thomas Fanger and Michael Kersten on this 1997 release. Starting with "Destination Unknown", Mind-Flux will show you "Mr. Johnson's Trip to the Moon", "Cars on Mars", "A Moody Night on Cyrus 7", and "Ms. Johnson's Trip to Venus". Be certain your pressure suit is properly sealed, with your earplugs carefully inserted. You'll not want to miss a single note of this sonic excursion. Peppy keyboards caper and prance with nimble-fingered response amid a seething nebula of quantumly-charged electronics. Drones and pulsations are delivered with rapid relish, streaming past you like blurred sequences of shooting stars. Extremely rhythmic E-perc is a constant companion, injecting dance qualities to the tuneage. Periodic use of vocoder vocals lends a Kraftwerk edge to some of this music. You can also expect the strong influence of Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze in the band's early sound. You will also observe the presence of moody, non-rhythmic passages which exemplify Mind-Flux's own evolving style.

This sonic voyage will last 74 minutes.
