Tangerine Dream - Tangram (Virgin)

Artist: Tangerine Dream
P: 1980 / 1985
Released in 1980, Tangram marked the beginning of the Johannes Schmoelling period and ushered Tangerine Dream forward into the new decade, while simultaneously glancing backwards at the 1970s. Although the synth tone colors used on Tangram are "newer sounding" than the brooding mellotron and synthesizers used on their 1970s works, they are still very somber and organic sounding and impart a gloominess to the album that I find very appealing. The album consists of two lengthy pieces including Tangram Set 1 (19'51") and Tangram Set 2 (20'22"), which are fairly interesting and feature the spacey sections and trademark pulsating sequenced synth bass lines that were characteristic of their late 1970s output. Instrumentation consists predominantly of Moog and Oberheim synthesizers, some string synthesizer, with acoustic and electric guitar parts here and there. Percussion is absent. All in all, this is an excellent Tangerine Dream album and forms a nice bookend to their 1970s recordings.

Tangerine Dream - The Island of the Fay

Artist: Tangerine Dream
P: 2012

This work is the beginning of a new series by Tangerine Dream: EASTGATE'S SONIC POEM SERIES. EDGAR ALLAN POE definitely is worth a start, a novelist who long enough has been labelled as dark, mysterious and gloomy only - Poe was more than that - a true visionary.
Edgar Allan Poe's ‘The ISLAND OF THE FAY' has been set to music by Edgar and Thorsten in a very exciting, dynamic and partly experimental way - a new violinist sets her maverick accents with electric sounds. It's the art of breathing life into a tale through strong music. Enjoy this true masterpiece of finest Tangerine Dream music - we don't promise too much....PS: You will find the whole but short tale of THE ISLAND OF THE FAY within the booklet! Enjoy reading but above all: enjoy listening.

Tangerine Dream - The Park is Mine

Artist: Tangerine Dream
P: 1986 / 1991

This album, recorded in winter of 1984, just as the band came back from the Poland tour, was published years later by Silva Screen Records, without permission of the band. The latter perhaps did not plan to release the soundtrack, and therefore the musical material appearing on this CD is rather raw, without proper remix and mastering. Sound is unbalanced throughout the album, and editing is choppy indeed. What a difference in comparison to the officially released albums that were mastered by Tangerine Dream themselves!Musically, this album is the closest to its immediate predecessor, "Poland", and heavily borrows in theme from that recording. You might suppose that the best fragments were utilized on "The Park Is Mine", but no, actually, one fragment that is prominent on this album is taken from the very ending of the live album, "Poland", and that fragment is the weakest point of the latter, in fact the only weak point of that album. While it has some high points, the overall impression is quite that of mediocrity. According to Christopher Franke, the leading member of the band, they had only two weeks of free time in 1984, the rest spent in the recording studio, composing music for various movies they signed contracts for.

Tangerine Dream - Zeit

Artist: Tangerine Dream
P: 1972/ 1986
Zeit (that's German for "time"), the third album by Tangerine Dream, is an example of early electronic ambient music. As such I think it's difficult to have a strong feeling about it either way, although there are apparently some people who consider it a masterwork and some who really hate it. In any event, it's an album that challenges one's conception of what music is and what function music is supposed to fulfill.
Like most of the early Tangerine Dream albums, Zeit plays like the soundtrack to cosmic occurrences. The goings-on here, however, are happening really slow. If parts of Alpha Centauri reminded me of a journey through the stars, Zeit plays like the formation of one of those stars.
Each of the four tracks are similar, though the first one, "Birth of Liquid Plejades", not only has the coolest name but also has interesting enough music that it merits my full attention whenever I put it on. In addition to the electric keyboards, Zeit was recorded with a cello quartet and the cellos are put to excellent use right away: "Liquid Plejades" begins as a sustained drone of cellos with minimal background electronic effects. After about seven minutes, the cellos are enveloped completely by a synthesizer and organ which then slowly wind along for another 13 minutes. The control of the tension throughout is superb.
I think that the rest of the album doesn't reward focused listening (while sober, anyway) as much as "Liquid Plejades", but I don't think that was the purpose of the recording. The remaining three pieces are like sonic paintings, except that you have to "look" at them a certain amount of time before they're over. Sometimes the musical events happen so slowly that a normal ear (an ear trained to absorb musical events that occur over shorter durations) will have to make an in-flight adjustment. Sometimes there are just tuneless sounds and pulses.
Chris Franke - VCS 3 synthesizer, cymbals, keyboard
Edgar Froese - gliss guitar, generator
Peter Baumann - VCS 3 synthesizer, organ, vibraphone
Guests:
Steve Schroyder - organ
Florian Fricke (Popol Vuh) - Moog synthesizer on track 1
Christian Vallbracht - cello
Jochen von Grumbcow - cello

Tangerine Dream - Zeitgeist Concert (3CD Set)

Artist: Tangerine Dream
P: 2010

The ZEITGEIST CONCERT is a live recording of the already legendary Royal Albert Hall concert on April 1st 2010 in London. This performance starts with a theatrical mysterious cello opening, leads into a beautiful piano improvisation by Linda Spa – getting brutally interrupted by Edgar Froese’s beating with a whip on the grand piano strings – symbolizing that all beautiful things won’t last forever…… and then suddenly the new sound arrangement of Rubycon 2010 taking the audience’s breath away: what a great opening!
In April 1975 Tangerine Dream played the Royal Albert Hall in London for the first time. So it was the 35th Anniversary in April 2010. In April 1970 TD released their first long-play album ever. This made a 40th Anniversary in April 2010. So TD indeed had to celebrate something which they took account of by performing a chain of very popular 33 tracks (see tracklist above) – a choice which wasn’t easy at all considering a portfolio of more than 1000 compositions over the decades….
The atmosphere in the Royal Albert Hall was very different to other places – cool and intimate at the same time - it felt as if the place was absolutely worthy to pay tribute to the band’s enormous lifework.
The 3 CD cleartray set comes with a 16-pages booklet picturing at least a part of the tunes you will be enjoying – a more than 3 hours trip through your brain.

Tangerine Dream - Zoning Soundtrack

Artist: Tangerine Dream
P: 1986/ 1996

An Edgar Froese solo project billed as Tangerine Dream - he is the composer, producer, co-engineer and is responsible for all the instruments - the 13-track video soundtrack was released on January 25, 1996. The Movie was back from 1986.
Jerome Froese is listed as a co-composer on two numbers - The Conspiracy and Missing Link - and a saxophone is featured throughout, though the sound is probably programmed on a synthesizer. Each track is complete, with the clockings between 3:08 and 5:56, which is a plus, considering the abbreviated numbers that appear on other TD soundtracks.
Tangerine Dream was in a transition period as Edgar Froese was moving the group to its own label.

Terry Marshall - Night Lines

Artist: Terry Marshall
P: 1993
Terry's use of guitar blended with acoustic and synthesized instruments is almost perfect. Local Australian talent at it's best, Terry and his 'muso-friends' have created a wonderful music style with undertones of Deep Forest and Single Gun Theory. This was his first album. It is hard to put this music style into a music store category - Ambient Jazz & World Music don't quite hit the mark but if you like browsing these sections of your favorite music store you will enjoy this unique experience.

The Circular Ruins - Conjunction

Artist: The Circular Ruins
P: 2003

Double CD (129 minutes) of deeply absorbing ambient soundscapes and brooding groove-ambient electronica. These are powerful and enigmatic pieces of ambient electronica.
This was the very first DataObscura release, comprising the darker works from 2002-2003. The album is divided into two disks labeled PENUMBRA and the darker UMBRA (beginning with Embers).
"Either one of these CD's would be an excellent package on its own. As a double CD, this is an awesome set!"
