Tangerine Dream - Loreley (DVD)

Artist: Tangerine Dream
P:
2008 / 2010

The legendary event with TD and KS on July 18 2008 at the Loreley far above the Rhine River. This DVD is a beautiful registration of this TD concert on one of the worlds best Amphi Theaters. TD was playing very inspiring and the sounds looks great, with a mix of older and newer work. Together with the falling darkness, their lasers gave a marvelous atmosphere. A day which you never forget.
This DVD is therefore a must, for people who have been there, a double must.

Tangerine Dream - Luminous Visions (DVD + CD)

Artist: Tangerine Dream
P: 1998

This release has several attractions for the TD fan:
- A chance to hear TD write in a more rhythmic, "techno" style. Some of the rhythms are reminiscent of their 70s sequencer material, but with 90s polish and sensibilities.
- A relatively short but dense interview with TD, including brief clips of a recent concert (I wish they would release a whole DVD of that!), as well as Edgar talking a little bit about everything.
The computer animation shorts of Yoichiro Kawaguchi have been a feature of the ACM SIGGRAPH Electronic Theater for over 10 years. Some of the shorts are available on VHS through the Association of Computing Machinery, however, this DVD features an extended selection of the Kawaguchi material, that is hard to find anywhere else. The technical quality far exceeds that found on VHS and all the material is presented continuously rather than scattered among various SIGGRAPH tapes. For fans of abstract computer animation and electronic music, it does not get much better than this.

This is the version, where the original soundtrack is also included as an additional CD.

Tangerine Dream - Madcap's Flaming Duty (DVD)

Artist: Tangerine Dream
P: 2007

TD’s performance of all 13 new songs - including a bonus song -, shows the Band in a very cool and relaxed atmosphere. Additionally you’ll see some ‘making of images’ as well as a 6 minutes Intro. It is probably the most intimate and private session the Band has done so far. Sit back and relax while watching parts of a very different world of Tangerine Dream’s musical universe.
Madcap’s Flaming Duty is true to Tangerine Dream’s form, full of hollow sounds and spacey atmosphere. It is dedicated to former Pink Floyd member Syd Barrett, and the lyrics of each song are taken from the poems of British and American poets, ranging from William Blake to Ralph Waldo Emerson to Walt Whitman. Depending on your tolerance for such kitsch in your music, the idea is either insufferably pretentious or delightfully frivolous. Either way, the poetry fits perfectly with the layered landscape of the music.
Chris Hausl, the vocalist, inflects the poems with despair, although at times he sounds like he’s doing an impression of Ian Curtis. However, for a band that has often been criticized for failing to integrate vocals effectively within the music, Madcap’s Flaming Duty is a coup. Hausl uses his voice in an understated way, and his reservation manages to mesh with the ambience of the album.

This DVD was originally recorded in January 2007 in Vienna.
The lyrics for each of the songs on the new album are adapted from English and American poets from 17th and 18th century literature by Bianca F. Acquaye.
The music is written by Edgar Froese and Thorsten Quaeschning.

Edgar Froese - Keyboards, E-Guitar, Dobro, Blues Harp, Bass
Thorsten Quaeschning - Keyboards, V-Drums, Steel Drums, Recorder, E-bow Guitar

Linda Spa - Flute, Didgeridoo, modified Bagpipe
Iris Camaa - Percussion, Drums

Tangerine Dream - Miracle Mile

Artist: Tangerine Dream
P: 1989
The year 1988 brought us only two releases from Tangerine Dream (which is little only if compared to their output in previous years) - a studio album "Optical Race", and a soundtrack, "Miracle Mile". Released for public consumption a year later, the album provides us with some very good music, almost worth comparison with previous efforts from the band. Almost, but not quite. On the one hand the album contains watered-down themes resembling previous work on "Canyon Dreams", "Near Dark" and "Heartbreakers". A derivative work, but worth listening. Perfect examples might be 'One for the Books', 'Running Out of Time' and 'After the Call'. On the other hand, we have some unique and original tracks, which are consistently in the moody percussive rhythmic mode. A pleasure to listen, undoubtedly, but nothing that would set us on our knees. Good representative tracks that set the mood on this album are 'Teetering Scales' and 'All of a Dither'. Musically, these tracks do not contribute to the musical heritage of the band, but nevertheless represent solid, good soundtrack work. Proceeding further, we once again come back to slightly derivative work in 'Final Statement', 'In Julie's Eyes', and 'People in the News'. Good old times, one might say. However, time and again we scratch our heads with a powerful deja vu.

Tangerine Dream - Mona Da Vinci

Artist: Tangerine Dream
P: 2011

"Mona Da Vinci" doesn't sound like Mona Lisa's smile looks like - but the music on this brand-new disc is also very mystical and full of surprises. Five of the six tracks have never been released before and "Calumet" does only exist in a live version. Enjoy for example a brilliant guitar solo on "Phantoms and Oracles" by one of TD's guest guitarists Zlatko Perica. Delight in this special cupdisc - a true option for future dreams and realities!:-) PS: This will be the first CUPDISC (EP) coming in a JEWEL CASE packaging - NOT in a cardboard sleeve!

Tangerine Dream - Mota Atma (TDI Version)

Artist: Tangerine Dream
P: 2003
Soundtrack for the Spark Guchy Production.

The music on this CD evolves and develops in a more traditional TD style around a unifying theme / sequencer pattern. The sounds emerge and dissolve from the mix, rather than making abrupt shifts in direction in the middle of the piece as has sometimes been the case in other recent releases. I really fumbled about trying to describe of classify this disc because it is unique. While it has qualities that other people have mentioned (Tibet, Oasis, Schulze) I would go so far as to call it something of a mix between Quinoa and Poland. It is hard to explain the latter choice other than some of the phrasing are reminiscent of the mid 80s period.
The theme keeps resurfacing throughout the generous 71 minute disc to the point that I really couldn't tell which track I was listening to without looking at the player. Whether this is a good thing or a bad thing is subjective. However the constant return of this theme provided reassurance of a some sort of constant; a basic element like the air or water, or the return of the sun each day in the biblical creation story. It felt both meditative and energizing at the same time. While it doesn't contain any tracks that might prompt you to tear off your headphones and tell someone they HAVE to hear this, it is an enjoyable solid release. I don't think it should generate any tirades of serious complaints among fans (except for the constant critics among us).
I will say is that does sound better on headphones than in my car stereo. Also, because it is such a unified piece, the breaks/fades between track almost seem artificial. I might be an improvement if the tracks had simply been indexed and flowed together, rather than having actual breaks in the music. Alternatively, you could view each track as a remix. ;^)

Tangerine Dream - Shy People

Artist: Tangerine Dream
P: 1988

Original Motion Picture by Jill Clayburgh and Barbara Hershey
Music Composed, Performed and Engineered by Tangerine Dream (Froese/Franke/Haslinger) in 1987.
* Singer: Jacquie Virgil - Lyrics: Edgar Froese
** Singer: Diamond Ross - Lyrics: Haslinger, Franke
Shy People is a relatively long track. It starts off, very similar with the intro from Shine On You Crazy Diamond, from the Pink Floyd record Wish You Were Here.
Jacquie Virgil, the singer, begins with beautiful wordless vocal, but when she sings the lyrics, you get very disappointed, as she sneers the words out. Especially in the chorus, that has an interestingly quirky synth-melody, she sounds like a bad Tina Turner. If you can get beyond the singing, the track is acceptable. Joe's Place is a dark piece, and it sounds as if the Mellotron has had a revival. This flashback, makes this 70's inspired track pretty interesting. The Harbor, sung by Diamond Ross, is uptempo synthrock, with well performed synth and guitar interaction, that has the track to be credited for. The singer, undoubtedly paid for the occasion, really can't deliver the goods, as Haslinger and Franke simply has provided some poor lyrics. The rhythm of the song reminds of One of These Days - yet another reference to Pink Floyd. Nightfall is background music, and not very interesting on record. Together with Brother Or Stranger from 1986, Dancing On A White Moon is the closest Tangerine Dream comes to genuine pop music. The experience of writing pop songs is almost on an embryonic stage. In spite of the killer synth riff, the track lacks a great deal of enthusiasm, not only from Jacquie Virgil, but also Tangerine Dream. It can tempt you to think, that the film producers wanted a soundtrack with pop songs, and Tangerine Dream only did it to afford the newest synths on the market.

Tangerine Dream - Tangents

Artist: Tangerine Dream
P: 1994

Though founder-member Edgar Froese still leads a contemporary Tangerine Dream today, it is the period documented on this lavish four-CD box set that defines the classic Tangerine Dream sound and forms the basis of their reputation. Remastered and rerecorded by Froese himself, Tangents contains all the essential recordings from the groundbreaking trio's 1973-83 Virgin recordings: Phaedra, Rubycon, Force Majeure, Stratosfear, Tangram, and Richochet. Rather than proceeding chronologically, each disc is an amalgam of the various periods, sequenced to provide an ultimate TD excursion. For it is the idea of journey that signifies the Tangerine Dream experience. Pioneering the use of early synthesizers, their pieces typically begin with rhythmically repeating sequences of notes, upon which lush and dreamy keyboard sounds are layered, slowly developing into a sense of deep space. The music is, by turns, foreboding and uplifting, majestic and cinematic. It was the ultimate "headphone" music of the time, making liberal use of stereo pans and long, receding reverberations. Though labels such as "space rock" and, later, New Age, were put on their music, Tangerine Dream have remained a world unto themselves. The music never really "rocks," and any mystical, healing aspects of their music appear incidental. Though precursors to so-called ambient music, Tangerine Dream seems more about triggering dreams and fostering inner mental landscapes. According to Froese, in a lengthy liner-note statement answering the band's false interpreters and naysayers, "Tangerine Dream's music has only switched on the projector of your own personal dream--nothing more." While obviously aimed at the ardent fan, complete with a sumptuously designed booklet and an extra disc of previously unreleased Edgar Froese material, this well-conceived box set serves equally well as the definitive introduction for new listeners.
