Phonosynthese - Waldall

Artist: Phonosynthese
P: 2005
Elektrolux e10000111cd
"In electronic music, there is hardly another musical style referred to as often and readily as dub. Indeed, it is quite charming to give additional deepness to a track by using the echo delay to full capacity. But where others more or less stay at the surface, Doc.Nic, Mr.Rod and 'J' alias Phonosynthese are speaking the language of dub fluently, but nevertheless do not indulge in cliché audio escapisms into the Carribean. Two years after the celebrated Lebensstrom"" debut (also on Elektrolux), the trio which is living a few kilometers to the north of Frankfurt lives up to its project name by presenting a naturalistic but yet urban interpretation of sound deepness. The listener must not be misled by ostensibly humorist track titles - the ""Waldall"" absolutely is about serious music. In ""Februar Dub"", a Jamaican soundscape actually meets a shock frosted winter landscape with foggy mountains, the ""Traumzauberbaum"" is praised by heavy handclaps and a melancholic piano, a ""Glitzerblume"" is defoliated by a Jazzfunk organ with a nodding beat, and by ""Nebelhorn"" or ""Fruchttrigger"", even the melancholy ambient trance dub of the early nineties experiences an enthusiastic revival. For sure one of the most intensive and complex chillout albums in spring 2005.

Popol Vuh - Aguirre (Soundtrack)

Artist: Popol Vuh
P: 1976 / 1999
The title track is the ubiquitous soundtrack for Werner Herzog's classic film Aguirre, the Wrath of God, an excellent movie about a doomed party of conquistadors gradually swallowed up by an uncaring jungle. Fricke created here a transcendent masterpiece of ambience; seriously some of the finest mellotron work ever recorded.

Popol Vuh - City Raga

Artist: Popol Vuh
P: 1995

There were different phases of Popol Vuh concept development.
Ambient with elements of ethnic music (long before these genres were invented)["Affenstunde"; "In Den Gärten Pharaos"; "Aguirre"]; romantic meditative ballad rock with classical and Oriental influences ["Hosianna Mantra", "Das Hohelied Salomos"], raga rock with pepetitive choral chants ["Letzte Tage - Letzte Nächte", "Sei Still, Wisse I'H BIN"]... By the early 90s Florian Fricke, leader of the band, understood that his old records couldn't impress young listeners (and the main listener was his own daughter), so he decided to adjust his music to the tastes of new generation of listeners, who listened to Future Sound of London, Enigma, Deep Forest etc. With the help of young musician Guido Hieronymus he recorded this album - "City Raga". Voice of Mexican singer Maya Rose, samples of ethnic songs, electronic beats and rhythms... It was like return to the roots of Popol Vuh (electronic music, ethnic elements) but in other epoch. The album is quite easy listening and the positive energy of Florian Fricke is here. Slow track "Last Village" could remind you of "Aguirre" theme. It was the last album with guitar playig by Daniel Fichelscher ("Morning Raga").
If you are fan of Popol Vuh sound of the 70s-early 80s - simply pass by this album.
If Popol Vuh is interesting for you as a concept - try to listen to "City Raga" and you would find much interesting moments here.
If you like music in style of Deep Forest, Enigma, Baco de Gaia - this album was recorded especially for you.

Popol Vuh - For You and Me

Artist: Popol Vuh
P: 1991

1991’s For You And Me is one of the most beautiful albums in the last working phase of Popol Vuh. Written and recorded in the time of the first war in Iraq, the album stands as a Popol Vuh devotion to freedom in the world, more international understanding and tolerance beyond cultural differences. For You And Me is a positive celebration of world music, one which finds it’s influence constantly shifting from African, Irish, South American etc. flavours and is among the richest and most diverse in the Popol Vuh catalogue. As with past releases, Florian Fricke is again joined the unique vocal stylings of Renate Knaup-Aschauer. The bonus track is an unreleased piano version of the song OM Mani Padme Hum 3 played solo by Florian Fricke.

Pyramid Peak - Evolution

Artists: Pyramid Peak
P: 2007
Tangerine Dream around the Exit era, can be heard here in the Pyramid Peak way.
Thats the main style of this CD.

The opener ‘Gravity’ simply has to be a homage to ‘Exit’ period TD. The sound palette and compositional style are spot on for that era. Indeed the whole track is just perfect. Notes are struck and left to fade into the distance. A slow beautiful flutey melody drifts through the ether. A sequence starts up. Another melodic sequence bubbles to the surface taking us back to those heady days when our heroes still had something exciting to say. This second sequence gains in power all the time whilst a stonking lead line hits all those musical pleasure receptors (ooh err missus!). We even get some recited foreign text as in ‘Kiew Mission’ (I think!). It all works so well. A wonderful way to start the album.
The title track, at almost half an hour, is a real epic. Tranquil pads waft from the speakers then a casual Eastern sounding lead line can just be heard. Enter a tabla type rhythmic sequence and it’s instant ‘Hyperborea’! Another sequence falls into formation. The backing swells and things become increasingly syncopated. This is rapidly turning into another cracker, but they are not finished yet as another sequence bursts forth and the excitement level goes up yet another couple of notches. There is a definite moodiness to the lead lines; a sort of edgy melancholy which when contrasted with all the powerful pulsations makes things even more effective. We get an explosion through which the pulsations surge, like fighter aircraft through a ball of flame. Some more sampled speech gives a sinister twist. A bass beat strikes up and in its wake the sequences morph to give a more optimistic feel, enhanced by some lovely soft pads. In the seventeenth minute the sequences start to subside, we get some manic laughing then distorted echoing utterances. The mood changes once again as a tinkling sequence emerges from watery effects like air bubbles rising from a diver far below. There is a delicate beauty to it all. Backing drones create a contrasting melancholia. A more percussive sequence enhances an already excellent passage of music still further. A slow thoughtful lead glides above the pulsations taking us to the end of another excellent track with many a twist and turn along the way.
'History’ explodes onto the scene with vast reverberating fizzing stabs of sound. Sampled text calls out to a crowd on more than one occasion, relieving important events from the past. The tension builds and builds embellished by Jarre type electronic whooshes. The pace quickens as an insistent rhythm drives things forward along with a lovely thick bass line. A little melodic motif skips over the top. This is excellent body moving stuff. A sharper lead line cuts through the air. Ethereal pads and a more delicate sequence bring some contrast nearer the end but overall this is a non-compromising track full of power and attitude.
With a track called 'Sequenced’ there are certain expectations but it isn’t until the third minute that the expected rapid note runs burst through. They are well worth waiting for however as my hands are soon beating out time on the table, being taken along by the mounting excitement. Things become increasingly syncopated until just before the half way mark where the energy level subsides a little only to make things seem even more ball breaking when the vast wall of notes reappear.
'Drive 2007’ appropriately starts with a drone that seems to go deeper and deeper until it is replaced by ominous dark pads. You can almost feel the vast weight of water above you. A tinkling loop shines through the blackness like a laser, bass pulses getting the heart to race. Thick mournful pads make a fleeting appearance then wallop, sequences and rhythms start to surge forward faster than I could take them in. An almost anthemic lead completes the picture. Wordless female vocal colouring momentarily adds a little softness before we surge forwards once more.

What an awesome way to finish what is I reckon the best Pyramid Peak album yet.

Radio Massacre International - Blacker

Artist: Radio Massacre International
P: 2006

BLACKER is the latest release from RMI's paralell universe documenting other aspects of the band's musical activity, in this case the album recorded during preparations for the band's `anti-social' performance at The Brudenell Social Club in Leeds during June 2005 and bears a strong resemblance to the music played that night, incorporating bass loops, and layered small percussion alongside the more familiar guitar, keyboards and sequencers.
There is one epic 28 minute journey alongside 3 other pieces of varying length, all them forming a cohesive representation of just where the band was at at this specific moment in world history.

Radio Massacre International - E-Live 2003

Artist: Radio Massacre International
P: 2004

Recorded in Sept. 2003 at the famous Dutch E-Live Festival this is immaculately recorded and falls into the category of the classic RMI sound oozing layers of synths melody and dense spatial energy. A trip into the Nebula Galaxy by way of a time warp thru’ a black hole. Totally different material than the previous set.
