Steve Jolliffe - Escape

Artist: Steve Jolliffe
P: 1991
Escape finds Steve Jolliffe blending leading-edge digital technology with the amber resonances of traditional acoustics. The album starts out with a sneaky, waltz-like number displaying rich melodies intertwined with exuberant rhythms. The music at times is wild and eclectic in its progressive expression, escaping into soothing and somber tomes, distant and ancient. His musical sketches reveal an underlying complexity, imbued with classical undertones and beauty. Atmospheric and stretched out yet concise, Jolliffe’s music plays proper homage to Tangerine Dream, with artistic nods to Patrick O’Hearn and Mark Isham, to Norwegian synthesists Oystein Sevag and Erik Wollo and to French countrymen Bernard Xoloti and Jean Michael Jarre. The digital-orchestra sound and Teutonic touches, coupled with spacey phrasing even bring to mind the Erdenlang label.

Steve Jolliffe - Temmenu

Artist: Steve Jolliffe
P: 1996

"Temmenu" is a remixed version of the 1985 MC "Voices" Original CD release 1996 on Sine Records label. Temmenu is apparently a star set at 28° in the shoulder of the constellation of Taurus. Babylonian astronomers named it this, the literal translation being "foundation stone", and it was regarded by the ancients as the central sun of the universe. It's even rumoured that Egyptian priests received communications from a race which travelled from Sirius and Temmenu. All fascinating stuff, and it's good to see that trouble has been taken to supplement the excellent sleeve graphics with some decent information. Musically the album consists of a single piece titled 'Voices'. The sleevenotes proclaim that the music has "the ability to create sympathetic vibrations designed to transfer your being to a separate reality" and they also go on to say that "in theory 35 octaves separate Earth time from solar time".

Steve Roach + Jorge Reyes - Vine, Bark + Spore

Artist: Steve Roach & Jorge Reyes
P: 2000
This recording captures a pure, organic sound that is rich with the potent magical atmosphere that has become central to their music in both solo and group settings. The remote and mysterious locations in the deep of Mexico's historic landscape as well as the hallucinogenic terrain of the Sonoran desert in Southern Arizona provide the ground for this music to take place upon. Created from a genuine surreal blending of acoustic and electronic instruments along with voice and location recordings make up some of the ingredients of this musical elixir, one of . With the intention of creating an opening to step through strong shamanic undercurrents time and again. Vine, Bark & Spore offers the music as the medicine for the soul.
An essential record of why the music of Roach and Reyes acts as a transmitter of the attitudes that ancient cultures had towards music and the spiritual aspects of life while merging with the currents of today.

Steve Roach - Empetus

Artist: Steve Roach
P: 1986
Released in 1986, this recording of intricately-woven sequencer lines and buzzing synthesizers established Roach as the American answer to the pioneering European electronic masters of the 70's (Klaus Schulze, Tangerine Dream). Alternately thrilling and serene (sometimes within the space of the same track), Empetus' waves of energy rest upon labyrinthine patterns of interlocking notes and wildly cascading tonal clusters. Roach varies the moods from piece to piece as well: the bright, piercing electronics of ''Seeking'' contrast vividly with the starker, sweeping veils of sequenced notes and arcing waves of ''Empowerment'', or the turbo-charged synths that rev through ''Conquest''.
It's all riveting, exciting stuff, and although Roach largely abandoned the style as he moved forward, Empetus remains an important, if largely unsung, statement documenting the course of modern American electronic music."

Strange Inside - Moments in Passion

Artist: Strange Inside
P: 1996

I was, and still am, very taken with Strange Inside's first album 'Different Colours'. I liked the melodic content, the use of sequences and (unusually for me) the fine use of electric guitar. Gerd Lubos is most certainly a gifted musician and it shines through on nearly all his pieces. Fans of Paul Ward I'm sure will like his prog tinged output, and I greeted the arrival of this latest work with some excitement. The title track opens in typical Strange Inside fashion. Laid back (but in no way pedestrian) rhythmics form the backdrop for melodic synth riffs and eventually some impressive guitar work. 'Talk to the Whales' (the longest track at 12:22) follows and this really is another tremendous offering. Yes, whalesong has seen more use than Peter Schmeical's gloves, but when it's merged into a track of such stunning melodic content as this it just can't fail. Gorgeous swirling synth pads interplay with complex sequenced arrangements. Supplementing this is guitar work straight from the top draw. Never overpowering, never dull, just sheer class. Melodically enchanting, acoustically fascinating, and overall worth the price of the CD for this track alone. 'Tears of Hope' features a suitably passionate guitar theme backed by harpsichord synth and piano. 'Japanese Spring' opens with a flutey riff reminiscent of Waveform's 'Making Waves' then goes onto develop into a very stylish piece, with a strong backbeat and percussion driving string synths, guitar, and repetitions of the flutey motif. 'Across the Rainbow' serves up yet more lashings of fine electric guitar work. The theme is very catchy and is soon ingrained on the mind. Formula drum/harpsichord backing is present but it's the soaring guitar riffs which very much take centre stage. I feel I should start to get rather tired of the same sort of styles and sounds being served up, but somehow at this stage it still remains fresh and captivating. 'Raindance' just keeps the guitar riffs coming. Tribal type rhythms and sequences keep the piece flowing, and again it's hard not to enjoy infectious nature of the music. "Steady as she goes" with 'Dying Secrets', and yes you could argue that the formula doesn't change that much throughout the tracks, and I'd agree that variety is not this album's strong point. Gerd does tend to over use the harpsichord synth voice and if you don't like electric guitar then steer clear, but really these are minor gripes at what is undoubtedly a fine album. The trio of tracks which close would provide more ammunition for the person who would like to accuse this of being a bit "samey" but hey, at least you know what you're getting here. Track after track of contemporary/prog oriented EM tackled with the expertise of a master. Easy to get on with, genuinely strong melodies aplenty, and if nothing else it does prove that the music doesn't always need to be weird, difficult and bereft of melody to get my thumbs up! (GG)

Surface 10 - Surface Tensions

Artist: Surface 10
P: 2006
DIN 24
LTD 1000 Copies.

This release from 2006 offers 66 minutes of melodic electronic music laced with illbient undercurrents. Surface 10 is Dean De Benedictis.
Prepare to have your awe stretched as dense electronic textures conquer the sky and maintain a strident presence. Meanwhile, livelier riffs and heavenly sequences dominate the music's foreground with their vibrant behavior. Passages stream with sneaky embellishments, each increasing the density while contributing to a greater overall resonance (albeit a resonance seasoned with twitchy personality).
Synthetic rhythms chitter away, generating languid patterns that are too sedate to belong on a dancefloor, but too excitable to remain subliminal. Sometimes these beats spurn the notion of tempos and just act as additional aspects in the thickening cluster of sounds.
Melody plays an important role in this music, but often the tunes are host to nests of quirky effects all vying for attention. There's a definite illbient edge going on here, as harsh noises of utterly mechanical disposition agitate the flow with their staccato chatter. Sounds are frequently chopped in mid-definition and fiercely repeated. If not for the even flow of the rest of the mix, you'd suspect your CD player of malfunctioning.
These disruptive elements keep your attention focused on the music, where it should be in the first place. Not an instant of this inventive tuneage should be missed.

Syn - Soundwave Traveller

Artist: Syn
P: 2002
Over 70 minutes of Berlin School heaven split over three tracks. Think of AirSculpture, RMI, Jiannis and even some of Edgar Froese's solo albums. This CD is pure sequencer / Mellotron indulgence. There are many layers to the shifting analogue (that word can't be stressed enough on this album) sounds. The constants tend to be the sequences which get a grip then just keep chugging along. Subtlety isn't the order of the day here, they are rather relentless. Restrained electronic percussion is added from time to time providing extra interest just when it is needed. Enough of the generalities, on to the thirty minute (plus) opening title track. Lovely cosmic bleeps and whooshes give way to equally spacey drones. We then get some gorgeous 'Epsilon in Malaysian Pale' type mellotron sounds. A percussive lead line shimmers above the drones. In the tenth minute a lovely deep typical mid to late seventies sequence emerges. The tron sounds get better and better as the sequence continues to pulse away. It's now more like 'Macula Transfer'.
Little lead lines come and go. Some of them purposeful and some of them more meandering, similar to earlier AirSculpture. With four minutes to go the sequence departs and it now sounds like some of the more atmospheric moments from 'Stratosfear' then 'Encore'. 'Freefall' is straight into another sequence, this time faster than in the first track. More tron sounds back it up and a very decent melody comes and goes over the top. Another repeated melodic motif almost acts like a sequence in its own right. This number reminds me of a couple of tracks from 'Ages' melded together. With five minutes to go the sequence starts to subside and what sounds like spaceships hurtling by at warp speed take over. Things then take a much darker turn, thick eerie pads dominating. I get the feeling that this might originally have been a much longer piece, if so I would love to hear the rest of it sometime. Sequences and mellotron are again pressed into action from the very first moment of 'Sonus (Part 3)'. A lead line soars over the top as the tron swells and falls around wonderful pulsations. Gradually a rhythm is added. My attention is dragged towards the leads one moment, the sequence the next and then as it bursts forth the gorgeous Mellotron. At around ten minutes we get a bit of a breather for classic TD atmospherics. Things start to build up again a couple of minutes later but never rise above a slow comfortable plod.
With four minutes to go we start the wind down towards the end. Windy effects, the odd note played here or there keeping the interest until the final lovely melodic pads fade into oblivion. As is mentioned in the liner notes 'don't expect melodic music with little harmonies' but do expect relentless 'Berlin School' sequencer music.

Synco - Evolution Of Events

Synco bought a part of the Tangerine Dream gear at the early eighties and played in the TD style of that era. The result is the music on this second CD of Synco, which reminds us to the Logos, Poland, Tangram time.  Berlin School at its best, direct from Berlin.
