Remotion - Between Fiction and Reality

Artist: Remotion
P: 2001
This debut CD by Remotion (aka Dutchmen Richard Stuij, who does the composing and overall performing, and Arjan Steenbergen, who supplies engineering and additional drums and effects) features 71 minutes of relaxing electronic music shot with edge and powerful rhythmic sensibilities. Inspired by Berlin School roots, Remotion spurn computer sequencing. Their live-in-studio recordings rely upon nimble fingers and appealing melodies. E-perc plays a delicious part in that structure, propelling the dreamy passages into more dynamic territory with sinuous and alluring tempos that remain subdued despite their motivational purpose. Sighing tones of a peaceful nature tremble in the wind, soaring on breezes stirred by a slow-building core of melodic chords and fanciful riffs. By the time the percussive enter, the listener is lulled and primed for a journey into livelier regions. Borne on this rhythmic foundation, active keyboards ooze into the mix to unfurl complex riffs that intertwine with each other, generating a lush panorama of compelling tuneage. Upon achieving an emotional euphoria, the sonic mass dwindles, receding into minimal codas that bridge each separate track. While each track exemplifies a compositional command, producing interesting melodies that tickle the mind with their playful nature.

Richard Bone - Connection Failed

Artist: Richard Bone
P: 2008
LTD 100
"These 7 pieces were originally created as backing tracks for various collaborations between 1997 and 2006 that, for one reason or another, never came to fruition. Having all but forgotten what I had recorded, I recently came across the masters and decided to give them a listen. To my surprise they seemed to have a life of their own. Where I expected to find arid, empty passages I found ambient oases brimming with imaginary instruments. Sparse perhaps but proving, once again, that less can often be more. I hope you enjoy them.

Richard Burmer - Mosaic
Artist: Richard Burmer
P: 1984
This is Richard Burmer's first and most varied cd. It travels easily in both inner and outer space. Sonically, it is perfection. One song weaves seamlessly into the next. Textures, layers, this has it all. A true work of musical and studio genius.
The 80's produced the best "New Age" music. Steven Hill's weekend radio show called "Music From the Hearts of Space" was the entity that introduced to me precious few, genuine "New Age" artists including Richard Burmer. "Mosaic" is an album of profound electronic beauty. It's sonic textures stimulates.

Rick Wakeman - The Natural World Trilogy

Artist: Rick Wakeman
P: 1999
This is continuation of Rick`s new age (or new world) ambient music saga: "Aspirant Sunrise", "Apirant Sunset" and "Aspirant Sunshadows". You would hear relaxing melodic instrumental pieces, music landscapes. Music here is like flowing of the river or cold sea breeze in hot summer day.
Rick plays his favourite electronic keyboards (Korg, Kurzweil, Roland) in meditative mood. So the sound of the record traditional for Rick`s albums (it isn`t such a repetitive techno loops). In our crazy depressive agressive world the music by Rick is a kind of a cure from this depression.
Some people think of new age, ambient music as of low genre... Too simple, "everybody could play like this", music for elevators etc. By the way, sometimes in elevators you could hear light classical music (Vivaldi, Mozart etc.). Not a bad company for new age ambient musicians.
Wakeman got formal education and he could compose sophisticated music for symphonic orchestras. Rick once said, that book by Russian composer of the XIX century Rimskiy-Korsakov about the principles of orchesration for a long time was his favourite reading. You could believe that Wakeman could write music of highest quality in each genre. To landscapes by Rick you could return many times and each time you would find there something new.

Riechmann - Wunderbar

This is an absolute gem of German electronic music from 1978 influenced by Tangerine Dream, Kraftwerk and NEU! Sequencer patterns meet synthesizer layers and simple, spherical melodies. Really "wunderbar"!

Robert Carty - Natural Wonder

Artist: Robert Carty
P: 1992

This self-released 10-track 59:39 CD features some of the most beautiful and mesmerizing space music I have ever heard. The majestic timbres recall Phil Manzanera's PRIMITIVE GUITARS and Brian Eno's MUSIC FOR AIRPORTS. The razor-sharp clarity and feeling of direct connection (or tapping in) to another realm brings to mind Trans-Millenia Consort. More familiar earmarks are Mark Dwane's washes and chord progressions, Richard Burmer's melodicism and stateliness, Jonn Serrie's spacey, languid rhythms, and the ambiences and melodies of Eno's APOLLO. The key influences seem to be Dwane and Serrie, but whereas both of these artists have produced their share of clunkers, this disk is virtually faultless. Like Chris Franke's PACIFIC COAST HIGHWAY, this music might initially strike one as New Age, but a handful of listenings will purge that notion from your mind. Unlike the Franke album, Carty does not serve up tunes but conducts excursions to other worlds and planes of consciousness. This, admittedly, is a tired metaphor when used to describe space music, but it really applies, here. If you like any of the musicians which this CD evokes, you owe it to yourself to get it. Available from Robert Carty himself, it would be a bargain at twice the price. European E-music fans with a taste for American synthesists might well attain nirvana with this auspicious release. Others will merely be stupefied.

Robert Fox - A Gathering of Spirits (CD)

Robert Fox - Fire and the Rose

Artist: Robert Fox
P: 1992

This is epic music on a grand scale that manages to surpass the works of Vangelis himself. An elaborate electronic symphony with classical elements and beautiful atmospheric, ambient traits. Written as a dedication to his late wife, this is the most beautiful musical homage.

Robert Fox - Into the Light

Artist: Robert Fox
P: 1997

The first Robert Fox CD to feature spoken vocals, and the first after his collaborative work with Code Indigo. Robert continues to nurture his own unique style with this, his fifth solo release.

Massive symphonic textures, beautiful themes and superb use of power and subtlety are the hallmarks of this excellent album.

Robert Marselje - The Force of Music

Artist: Robert Marselje
P:
1993
Released in 1993 at Audio Works. This CD is partly filled with allready written compositions and partly filled with new compositions, written for this cd. The older parts are from the period 1989-1993.
Some details: Part 6 was written 1991 for a media-presentation. While the presentation was being edited, i had allready written movement 2 and 3. When the editor showed me the next scene in the presentation, i realized that movement 2 and 3 did not fit with the images and i had to start over. I remastered and rearranged the music for the CD.
When i lost a sound that was used in Part 7, the music improved even more. The dark, allmost imploding your speakers intro of Part 10 was made by a simple blow into the microphone. A bit altering and the sound changed into engines of a huge space vessel. This sound inspired me to compose part 10.
