Tangerine Dream - Tangram (Virgin)

Artist: Tangerine Dream
P: 1980 / 1985
Released in 1980, Tangram marked the beginning of the Johannes Schmoelling period and ushered Tangerine Dream forward into the new decade, while simultaneously glancing backwards at the 1970s. Although the synth tone colors used on Tangram are "newer sounding" than the brooding mellotron and synthesizers used on their 1970s works, they are still very somber and organic sounding and impart a gloominess to the album that I find very appealing. The album consists of two lengthy pieces including Tangram Set 1 (19'51") and Tangram Set 2 (20'22"), which are fairly interesting and feature the spacey sections and trademark pulsating sequenced synth bass lines that were characteristic of their late 1970s output. Instrumentation consists predominantly of Moog and Oberheim synthesizers, some string synthesizer, with acoustic and electric guitar parts here and there. Percussion is absent. All in all, this is an excellent Tangerine Dream album and forms a nice bookend to their 1970s recordings.

Tangerine Dream - The Park is Mine

Artist: Tangerine Dream
P: 1986 / 1991

This album, recorded in winter of 1984, just as the band came back from the Poland tour, was published years later by Silva Screen Records, without permission of the band. The latter perhaps did not plan to release the soundtrack, and therefore the musical material appearing on this CD is rather raw, without proper remix and mastering. Sound is unbalanced throughout the album, and editing is choppy indeed. What a difference in comparison to the officially released albums that were mastered by Tangerine Dream themselves!Musically, this album is the closest to its immediate predecessor, "Poland", and heavily borrows in theme from that recording. You might suppose that the best fragments were utilized on "The Park Is Mine", but no, actually, one fragment that is prominent on this album is taken from the very ending of the live album, "Poland", and that fragment is the weakest point of the latter, in fact the only weak point of that album. While it has some high points, the overall impression is quite that of mediocrity. According to Christopher Franke, the leading member of the band, they had only two weeks of free time in 1984, the rest spent in the recording studio, composing music for various movies they signed contracts for.

Tangerine Dream - Views from a Red Train (Cleopatra)

Artist: Tangerine Dream
P: 2008 / 2010
Here the Cleopatra label version.

'Views From A Red Train' is the new studio album by Tangerine Dream released in 2008. Three tracks from the album have already made their first public appearance during the Frankfurt gig (at Alte Oper/"One Night In Space Concert") last year. Maybe the most rocktype oriented recording TD ever did. The fans who just love the EM ambient background stuff should maybe safe their money on this one. Fair advise – but if you’re willing to do the test of expanding your tolerance, you’re always welcome.

Tangerine Dream - Zoning Soundtrack

Artist: Tangerine Dream
P: 1986/ 1996

An Edgar Froese solo project billed as Tangerine Dream - he is the composer, producer, co-engineer and is responsible for all the instruments - the 13-track video soundtrack was released on January 25, 1996. The Movie was back from 1986.
Jerome Froese is listed as a co-composer on two numbers - The Conspiracy and Missing Link - and a saxophone is featured throughout, though the sound is probably programmed on a synthesizer. Each track is complete, with the clockings between 3:08 and 5:56, which is a plus, considering the abbreviated numbers that appear on other TD soundtracks.
Tangerine Dream was in a transition period as Edgar Froese was moving the group to its own label.
