Schönwälder + Rothe - Filter-Kaffee 101

Artist: Mario Schönwälder & Rothe
P: 2011 / 2020
LTD 100

Filter-Kaffee 101 is the new side project by Mario Schönwälder and Frank Rothe (member of Fratoroler). Newcomer Fratoroler released their first CD-R 'Reflections' in 2010.
Filter-Kaffee 101 is performed and recorded over three years. Schönwälder & Rothe played a lot of real analogue and virtuell analogue gear. On an evening of January 2011 they listened to all this recorded stuff while they were drinking cups of coffee and take the tracks in the right order.
Mastered by Gerd Wienekamp of Rainbow Serpent, the CD is a wonderfull nearly 70 minutes long trip into their world of analogue soundsscapes and sequences in Berlin School of Electronic Music. Highly recommended for all fans of the music from the great aera of EM, the seventies!

Schönwälder - Close By My Distance

Artist: Mario Schönwälder
P: 1992

Starting with the grammatically challenged “Let the Rhythm Comin’ On You,” this is vintage Schönwälder from 1992, relaxed and confident. A lilting bass line meanders its way just so from beginning to end as delicate beats and a subtle but effective synth solo move things along.
“Les Yeux Sans Visage” is light and airy, surprisingly abstract yet warm.
“Sems’U’Kanar” has long been a favorite of mine, here in a slightly shorter version than appears on Solotrip. The ethnic sounds, the guitar synth lead, the simple bass loop, all of it blending seamlessly together into something that isn’t exactly Berlin school, ambient, dance, or trance – just a great piece of electronic music. Beautiful tinkling electronics like glass adorn “The Point of Impact.” Again the gentle touch pays off here, as it does throughout.
“Memories of Oz” and the title track add on another 26-plus minutes of great mellow Berlin-tinged journeys.
Though the pensive wistful “Farewell From Heaven” seems such an appropriate way to end the disc, there’s more, namely two bonus tracks.
Recorded around the same time as the rest of the album, they do fit in well, though for flow I would have swapped them, opting for the dreamy “Testsequence” as the closer as opposed to the playful bouncing bass line of “Quiet Earth.”

Schönwälder - Eye Of The Chameleon

Artist: Schönwälder
P: 1989 / 1992

Originally recorded November 1988 - May 1989 at Orpheus Studio Berlin Composed, arranged and produced by Mario Schönwälder
Track 4 recorded live at the Berlin Planetary on 7th January 1989.
´The Eye Of The Chameleon´ is Mario Schönwälder´s 1st CD, released on Musique Intemporelle in 1989, re-released on Manikin Records in 1992.
In particular, the excellent title track is very typical late 1970s Schulze style. The bell-like sequences, the basses, the solos, and the overall atmosphere evidence this. It could be a track from “The Historic Edition”.

Schönwälder - Solotrip

Artist: Schönwälder
P: 1996 / 2005

A collection of new tracks from the late 80s and early 90s, combined with some pieces recorded this year. 'Trance-Mission-Fluid' combines some steady sequences and rhythms with a variety of motifs. Neat and tidy with good production, but rather bland. 'Journey Into Mystery' improves things though, sounding like unsequenced AirSculpture - and listen out for the bass drum! 'With Love from Us to You' was recorded in 1994 at Berlin Planetarium with fellow EMists Broekhuis & Keller. Some good moments, and I'm sure it went down well with the visuals.
Back to 1987 for 'Aus einier anderen Zeit', a floating/ freeform piece with some interesting effects and noises. The 16 minute title track explores more commercial territory, especially the second half which features an uptempoalmost ambientbeat and some excellent synth motifs.
'Thrust or Fiction' is a short but impressive atmospheric piece, while 'Sems ú kanar' contains some strong sequenced sections but does go on a bit.
'Zerstückelte Freiheit im Großformat' ends interestingly but is nothing extraordinary. And really this sums up the whole album.

Uwe Schmidt (who goes by many monikers including "Atom" and "Atom Heart") is a German musician, composer, and producer known for peculiar dabblings in Latin, electro, and heavy metal, frequently blending multiple genres in a single recording. Here he takes on a hard rock classic, "Smoke on the Water," made famous by Deep Purple after watching a casino burn down during a Frank Zappa concert in Switzerland. This is an iconic song that is hard for anyone but Deep Purple (Mark II, with Ian Gillan and Ritchie Blackmore) to pull off.
By diverging totally from the stylistic trappings of the original, Señor Coconut manages a completely new take on the classic. It isn't at all derivative, but is amusing and lighthearted, and is much to my liking. The CD contains three different versions of the song, of which my clear favorite is the "Single Version" which is great and salsa-tinged. The other two versions are far more representative of Schmidt's electro-dance roots. The "King Britt Funke Mix" at over ten minutes is a bit excessive even for dedicated fans of the root material such as myself, while the "Sieg Über Die Sonne Remix" is a less unruly dance cover that's still weird, but modestly enjoyable.

"The Foreman of Gentle sounding Eurodigitalism, Serge Blenner, has given a new portion of classical- oriental bytestream on his later laser-disc...the greatest merits of this disc-among ambitiousness and musicalness- are in its airy and light form".
