Edgar Froese - Pinnacles

Artist: Edgar Froese
P: 1983

This recording is related to a long trip Edgar made in the early 80´s to Australia.
The name Pinnacles is taken from a huge million years old petrified stone landscape in the Western desert part of Australia. Edgar made books full of notes during the trip and sang melody lines into a walkman type of pocket recorder while walking among the maybe oldest stonegarden on the planet.
Back in his Berlin studio he transfered all ideas into rhythm, melodies and sounds. As landscapes around the world have always inspired Edgar for some purposes, Pinnacles is another example of his great love for this planet and beyond.
Here the original first version from Virgin, where Froese played without any overdubs.

Editor - The Creation of the World

The group's second release has a spiritual feel. It's reminiscent of Peter Mergener's "Let There Be More Light," "Creatures," and "Applause for Creation."

Electric Orange - Cyberdelic

Artist: Electric Orange
P: 1996

It is a good album with nice tunes, it includes the typical German style, combining electronic passages, but in this case, the space rock part is not so present. It maintain the minimalism style of some of the bands of krautrock movement, in specific the electronic side.

Elemental - Thee Divine Imagination

Artist: Elemental
P: 1999

'Splendor’ is melodic and swirling, all very grand and uplifting. ‘18K’ has an immense sound to it, the sequence relatively low in the mix and so much is happening around it that it is often hard to make out and even more difficult to concentrate on as your attention will be pulled from one happening to another. Its amazing that so much could be fitted into a three minute piece. Title track next, another melodic one full of majestic splendour but also with a touch of sadness. A superb fast rumbling sequence blasts through ‘The Solar Disc’. A nice big fast rumbling one, very intense and never letting up for a second, in fact increasing in ferocity right to the end. Wonderful track. Sequences again on ‘Solis Artus’ and as before at top speed. ‘Faerie Magick’ features a gorgeous melancholy lead line, extremely beautiful and yet the’ twee filter’ was not bothered with it in the slightest. The sequencer kicks back in for ’Spiritus Lenitatis’ but this time it is much slower and plodding. ‘Kozmotron’ picks up the pace again but I felt the sequence could have done with a bit more variety, a criticism that could just as equally have been levelled at the next track ‘Illumination’. ‘Aethyria’ is a splendid track. Cosmic bleeps and warbles increase in intensity, almost as if there is a storm in space which is brewing but never quite breaks.

‘Un Danse Petite’ is another very melodic number, a beautiful track, even a mayhem merchant such as myself was touched by it. ‘Solis Occasus’ finishes the album off with another gentle sequence. I enjoyed this CD, it is more polished than his first ‘Lux Aeternae’ and Steven Stokes the man behind Elemental obviously poured a lot of himself into it but in the polishing it lost some of its bite. It is certainly a much more emotional album than the first and this is probably what spoilt it for me a little. It is also, however, the aspect that a lot of people will find the most appealing and on balance I would expect this album to sell even better than his first. (DL)

Eric Snelders - Looking through the Eyes of the Overworld

Artist: Eric Snelders
P: 1995

After the excellent 'Looking for the Arms of Venus' I approached this CD with great anticipation. The 8 minute title track opens and immediately it's evident that Eric Snelders does not believe in departing too radically from a winning formula. The synth timbres, the female spoken voice and the measured approach are all very reminiscent of his previous album. 'Mixed Up Messages From My Mind' is a superb track bursting with intricate sequence patterns which surround a delicate piano interlude, while the short 'Beyond the Edge of the World' is a subliminal wash of ambience. The emphasis switches to a restrained and enjoyable melody on 'The Turn of a Lightship', and a throbbing bass sequence underpins massed synths on 'Cugel's Mission'. More pin sharp sequence patterns dominate the upbeat 'Wuthering Thoughts' accompanied by breezy melodics. The closing trio maintain the standard with ease and especially notable throughout the whole album is the superb sound quality - almost 3D at times. Fans of modern, melodic EM with plenty of sequences will certainly find much to their taste on this album. If you already have Eric Snelders' previous release 'Looking for the Arms of Venus' then this won't disappoint.  (GG)
