Tangerine Dream - Logos

Artist: Tangerine Dream
P: 1982/ 1994
Awesome. Deep. Atmospheric. And all the best bits from The Keep. Magnificent!
Logos (Parts 1-2) lasts for 45 minutes and the encore, Dominion, named after the venue, is only five minutes long.
Part 1 starts with an introduction of the band. The announcer thanks the audience for being patient, as the band went on stage, much later than initially planned. The track melodramatically begins with spluttering synths and a sinisterly repeated melody line. This part could be heard at concerts one year prior to this show, in an extended and more mean version. And the fact that TD played extremely loud during the early eighties, could only increase the feeling of the mood, in a physical way. Electronic Body Music? Yes, I do think so. But it isn't that dark all the way through. A little later, a beautiful, sad melody is heard. To be in the audience and to witness it, must have been truly touching. People doesn't hesitate to give a round of applause, although one note insistently keeps it going. It's probably Chris Franke who press the key. In an interview from the seventies, he once said, he was annoyed by the fact, that people began clapping in the very moment their lengthy excursions had died out, as they truly deserved some minute's silence!
A way to avoid people from clapping at the wrong time, he thought it would work, if he kept a note going on for a couple of minutes, instead. Then we're at the coolest part of the album. A cleverly programmed drum pattern is accompanied by a sample (it almost sounds as scratching), with the words "Wake Up!" repeated several times.
The final part of Logos Part 1 has a very beautiful melody, and belongs in the category of TD classics.
Tangerine Dream live at the Dominion Theatre in London on November 6, 1982.

2008 / 2010

The legendary event with TD and KS on July 18 2008 at the Loreley far above the Rhine River. This DVD is a beautiful registration of this TD concert on one of the worlds best Amphi Theaters. TD was playing very inspiring and the sounds looks great, with a mix of older and newer work. Together with the falling darkness, their lasers gave a marvelous atmosphere. A day which you never forget.
This DVD is therefore a must, for people who have been there, a double must.

Tangerine Dream - Lost in Strings Vol. 1

Artist: Tangerine Dream
P: 2013

When a writer for the LA Times asked Edgar few years back, how he would define his guitar playing skills, Edgar’s answer was very straight: “I’m not the best one, but I know what I’m doing”. So, through the last decades while Tangerine Dream participated from Edgar’s “painful exercises” on his six string, he never brought himself too much to the foreground. This is the first time you can listen to some of his guitar landmarks and find out about his authentic style when he gets lost in his strings…. Volume II to be continued!:-)

Tangerine Dream - Luminous Visions (DVD + CD)

Artist: Tangerine Dream
P: 1998

This release has several attractions for the TD fan:
- A chance to hear TD write in a more rhythmic, "techno" style. Some of the rhythms are reminiscent of their 70s sequencer material, but with 90s polish and sensibilities.
- A relatively short but dense interview with TD, including brief clips of a recent concert (I wish they would release a whole DVD of that!), as well as Edgar talking a little bit about everything.
The computer animation shorts of Yoichiro Kawaguchi have been a feature of the ACM SIGGRAPH Electronic Theater for over 10 years. Some of the shorts are available on VHS through the Association of Computing Machinery, however, this DVD features an extended selection of the Kawaguchi material, that is hard to find anywhere else. The technical quality far exceeds that found on VHS and all the material is presented continuously rather than scattered among various SIGGRAPH tapes. For fans of abstract computer animation and electronic music, it does not get much better than this.

This is the version, where the original soundtrack is also included as an additional CD.

Tangerine Dream - Madcap's Flaming Duty (DVD)

Artist: Tangerine Dream
P: 2007
TD’s performance of all 13 new songs - including a bonus song -, shows the Band in a very cool and relaxed atmosphere. Additionally you’ll see some ‘making of images’ as well as a 6 minutes Intro. It is probably the most intimate and private session the Band has done so far. Sit back and relax while watching parts of a very different world of Tangerine Dream’s musical universe.
Madcap’s Flaming Duty is true to Tangerine Dream’s form, full of hollow sounds and spacey atmosphere. It is dedicated to former Pink Floyd member Syd Barrett, and the lyrics of each song are taken from the poems of British and American poets, ranging from William Blake to Ralph Waldo Emerson to Walt Whitman. Depending on your tolerance for such kitsch in your music, the idea is either insufferably pretentious or delightfully frivolous. Either way, the poetry fits perfectly with the layered landscape of the music.
Chris Hausl, the vocalist, inflects the poems with despair, although at times he sounds like he’s doing an impression of Ian Curtis. However, for a band that has often been criticized for failing to integrate vocals effectively within the music, Madcap’s Flaming Duty is a coup. Hausl uses his voice in an understated way, and his reservation manages to mesh with the ambience of the album.

This DVD was originally recorded in January 2007 in Vienna.

Tangerine Dream - Mars Polaris

Artist: Tangerine Dream
P: 1999 / 2009
Recorded as a tribute to the ill-fated Mars Polaris Lander, this 71-minute CD features a highly rhythmic and often energetic sonic portrait of this ambitious exploration mission and outer space in general. A splendid mixture of keyboard riffs and unworldly sounds, coalescing into sharp songs that invigorate the spirit and entrance the mind ... sometimes even stirring the feet with their rich rhythmic sense. The melodies are vibrant with energy, driven by a vital sense of composition intended to awaken, not lull. A grandeur echoes within Tangerine Dream's music, melodies swell the soul until it explodes from the limits of one's fleshly vessel.
This album is an excellent example that invalidates most people's misconceptions regarding so-called "newage" music. Although Tangerine Dream often work in pieces of epic length, the songs on this CD are restricted to shorter form, averaging six to ten minutes.
This results in a compression of the above-mentioned power, giving the tuneage a tighter flow that does not lose one's attention with any slow-build of cycles. Instead, the pieces hit hard, grabbing listeners and catapulting them instantly into the adventure of outer space, drenching the void with a drama and tension that is as exhausting as it is inspiring.

Tangerine Dream - Melrose

MELROSE - the single CD of the once limited edition TRILOGY offer "The Melrose Years - The re-recordings 2003" including Melrose, Optical Race and Lily On The Beach..
When these songs were produced - inspired by a strong "American-Way-of-Life-atmosphere" they created a lot of irritation among the die-hard TD fans. Bearing this in mind all these tracks became nevertheless one of the most popular bunch of music from the late 80ies. Enjoy some wonderful compositions of that special time!

Tangerine Dream - Melrose (Private Version)

Jerome Froese joins Edgar Froese and Paul Haslinger for another intense foray into the world of electronic music. Up-tempo tracks such as "Melrose", "Yucatan" and "Rolling Down Cahuenga" predominate, fiery, percussive and minor in tone with structures that build and stirring percussive beats that drive ever-forward. The interspersed slower tracks are a nice compliment to all of this, gentle and really very pretty (especially the wistful closing selection, "Cool at Heart"). Saxophonist Hubert Waldner, who also played on the group's previous release, "Lily on the Beach", joins the core trio here as well, wailing away to great effect on the opening track. What I like about Tangerine Dream's work is that it is unapologetically electronic, making full use of synthesizers by playing to their strengths--variety, volume and modernity--rather than trying to use the keyboards to emulate the sound of, say, string orchestras or folk instruments (which they really can't match ...yet...). By taking this approach, Tangerine Dream creates vibrant, new music--richly textured, intelligently structured, and all their own.

Tangerine Dream - Miracle Mile

Artist: Tangerine Dream
P: 1989
The year 1988 brought us only two releases from Tangerine Dream (which is little only if compared to their output in previous years) - a studio album "Optical Race", and a soundtrack, "Miracle Mile". Released for public consumption a year later, the album provides us with some very good music, almost worth comparison with previous efforts from the band. Almost, but not quite. On the one hand the album contains watered-down themes resembling previous work on "Canyon Dreams", "Near Dark" and "Heartbreakers". A derivative work, but worth listening. Perfect examples might be 'One for the Books', 'Running Out of Time' and 'After the Call'. On the other hand, we have some unique and original tracks, which are consistently in the moody percussive rhythmic mode. A pleasure to listen, undoubtedly, but nothing that would set us on our knees. Good representative tracks that set the mood on this album are 'Teetering Scales' and 'All of a Dither'. Musically, these tracks do not contribute to the musical heritage of the band, but nevertheless represent solid, good soundtrack work. Proceeding further, we once again come back to slightly derivative work in 'Final Statement', 'In Julie's Eyes', and 'People in the News'. Good old times, one might say. However, time and again we scratch our heads with a powerful deja vu.
