Tangerine Dream - Phaedra

Artist: Tangerine Dream
P: 1974/ 1985
When the album "Phaedra" hit the album charts worldwide back in 1974, no one had foreseen such a remarkable career of a new musical sound created by Tangerine Dream. All instruments were new and unknown to the audience. The sound itself was the opposite of all common music at those days. During the concerts the band created an uncomparable atmosphere.
This 1974 masterpiece from Christopher Franke, Edgar Froese, and Peter Baumann ebbs and flows with richly dark soundscapes of electronic sounds and synth. After listening to Phaedra it's easy to understand why. The signature pulsing of thick, beautiful Tangerine Dream synth falls across the ambient treasures here, pulling along the orchestral dreamscape before oozing aside for thick washes of expansive sound. The now-classic title cut is both soothing and ghostly, throbbing with subtle sequences and twisted metallic calls before diving into a swamp of nightmarish whistles and hoots. "Mysterious Semblance" soars and swoops like a lovely electronic eagle, bringing tripped-out light and cosmic dignity to the collection. This and the follow-up Rubycon are juicy pieces to the Tangerine Dream pie.

P: 2005 / 2009
Here the Japan version.

All instruments were new and unknown to the audience. The sound itself was the opposite of all common music at those days. During the concerts the band created an uncomparable atmosphere. Now, more than 30 years later you can listen to the modern form of this classic recording. The material has been re-recorded by using partly the same kind instruments as on the original recording. Also the new digital technology has played a keyrole during various recording sessions. It was not the intension to please all the TD purists and analogue fans but you will have an idea of how the band is still connected to the style and trademark that has made them so original.
The additional title "Delfi" has been composed 2005 in the spirit of the seventies.

Tangerine Dream - Phaedra Farewell Tour 2014 Live in London (DVD)

Artist: Tangerine Dream
P: 2015

The London concert of the PHAEDRA FAREWELL TOUR 2014 on 23rd May at O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire was the second concert in a row of a long multi-week tour after starting in Paris. This DVD once again reflects the typical and especially warm welcome of our British TD fans during a Tangerine Dream concert in London - as Edgar often named as "TD's home." It was the last time for the band performing as a five man/woman band - Iris and Linda still were present. After that tour TD started the so-called QUANTUM YEARS with three concerts in Australia as a four man/woman band with the new member Ulrich Schnauss. Enjoy this special concert as a very good mixture of classic and earlier TD tracks, at the same time this DVD is a wonderful memory of one of the last concerts with the mastermind of TD Edgar Froese.

Tangerine Dream - Poland

Artist: Tangerine Dream
P: 1984 / 2006
Recorded live at the Ice Stadium in December 1983 in Warsaw-Poland. Recorded against all the odds at a concert played in sub-zero temperatures and plagued by powercuts in Communist Poland in December 1983, this album represents the very pinnacle of Tangerine Dream's live achievements in their 80's incarnation of Chris Franke, Edgar Froese and Johannes Schmoelling. It also marks the band's break from Virgin records, being the first of their releases on the Jive-Electro label, and thus the first album of their so-called Blue Years. Featuring four sets, each of about 20 minutes duration, all of the music here is flawless, both in its construction and its execution. It bears all of the classic Tangerine Dream hallmarks: beautiful synthesiser melodies, staggering guitar playing, gorgeous electronic textures woven about slowly developed minimalist percussion patterns and chord changes. With lots of variety both of tempo and timbre, and with some beautiful sampled sounds and stunning percussion programming, "Poland" holds the attention as few other Tangerine Dream works either before or since. It contains not a single dull moment and offers much to both surprise and delight. And now as a single CD instead of a double LP, it's also great value for money!

Tangerine Dream - Purgatorio

Artist: Tangerine Dream
P: 2004 / 2009
Tangerine Dream has completed their work on the second installment of their epic trilogy based on Dante Alighieri's "La Divina Commedia": Purgatorio.
Purgatorio is a musical piece of epic proportions with a total length of more than 2 hours, once again combining TD's trademark sound with orchestral and choral elements, as well as outstanding vocal performances. Edgar and Jerome Froese are joined by an ensemble of five guest musicians to create a truly magnificent piece of musical art.
The strongest things in this album are the sequence parts, their great and telling you what Dante means in his book. The slow pieces are even on the same level as Inferno, and are so well done by the singers that it gave sometimes tears in my eyes. I call this one a little Opera, like Inferno was more of a Passion. This work tells you strongly who you are and how we thinking in these days. That becomes a work of a writer from century's ago made a work that fits still in this time. Edgar and Jerome have done a great job to put the work of Dante on music.
This is a classical TD release for years, and maybe the work will be called classical after all.

Tangerine Dream - Quantum Gate (Double Vinyl)

Artist: Tangerine Dream
P: 2017

2017 release from the electronic music pioneers. Tangerine Dream have been a fundamental influence on electronic and progressive music since their formation in West Berlin, 1967. Inspiring genres, musicians and other art forms, from The Future Sound of London to Porcupine Tree, the widely popular TV show Stranger Things (for which their music also featured in) to seminal video game Grand Theft Auto V (for which they helped to write the soundtrack). The group have also received seven Grammy nominations, written over 100 studio albums and were led by Edgar Froese, who developed an instantly recognizable synth-based instrumental music based on a meditative musical experience that came to prominence in the '70s and '80s. Quantum Gate promises an updated, contemporary development of their trademark sound: sequencer-driven electronica covering a wide range of moods and atmospheres from ambient soundscapes to energetic, upbeat moments. The album began as a concept and series of musical sketches by Froese before he passed away in 2015. Remaining band members Thorsten Quaeschning, Ulrich Schnauss and Hoshiko Yamane worked together to realize Edgar's visions and expectations of a conceptual album that attempts to translate quantum physics and philosophy into music. New member Ulrich Schnauss comments: "at the moment hardly any other area of science questions our concept of reality (linearity of time etc.) as profoundly as research in Quantum physics - it's no surprise therefore that Edgar was drawn to these ideas since he had always aimed at reminding listeners of the existence of 'unopened doors'. In late summer 2014, Edgar Froese, Thorsten Quaeschning, Ulrich Schnauss and Hoshiko Yamane began to work on what was planned to be the first album of Tangerine Dream’s Quantum Years – a new phase of the band that Edgar wanted to use to introduce a couple of substantial changes. Consisting of himself, long term collaborator Thorsten Quaeschning (synths & musical director), violinist Hoshiko Yamane and new member Ulrich Schnauss (synths), the Quantum Years promised an updated, contemporary take on the band’s trademark sound of the 70s and 80s: sequencer-driven electronica covering a wide range of moods and atmospheres from ambient soundscapes to energetic, upbeat moments. Non-musical ideas relating to the field of quantum physics and philosophy had inspired Edgar to attempt a translation of these concepts into music. Very sadly however Edgar passed away in early 2015 – requesting that his wife, visual artist and TD’s manager for the last 15 years, Bianca Froese-Acquaye would ensure that his vision for the Quantum Years would still be realized. Throughout the last two years Quaeschning, Schnauss and Yamane therefore worked hard on achieving a result that would match Edgar’s expectations – as well as the ones of TD’s loyal fanbase. It’s worth noting that the compositions appearing on the album are not only based on theoretical concepts and ideas Edgar had outlined, but also on a large number of actual musical sketches that he luckily had already prepared during the initial phase of the band’s reformation process. Therefore, Quantum Gate is just as much a new beginning as it is a testament to Edgar’s never-withering inspiration and ever-flowing creativity.
PS: The vinyl comes as a double LP with gatefold sleeve containing an orange and a yellow vinyl.

Tangerine Dream - Quantum Key

Artist: Tangerine Dream
P: 2015

QUANTUM KEY will be the vanguard of the coming QUANTUM GATE album which Thorsten, Ulrich and Hoshiko are currently working on. Edgar Froese, the head and founder of Tangerine Dream, had the wonderful idea of translating the current knowledge of the quantum physics - which he was very much interested in - into sound and already started this project before his sad death in January 2015. The cupdisc MALA KUNIA was the first music out of “The Quantum Years” series which was published in November 2014 on the occasion of the MMW Festival concert in Melbourne. It was a great fortune that Edgar still had the chance to discuss his vision with the remaining band members and that Bianca, Edgar's wife, decided to continue with Tangerine Dream. She knew that Thorsten, Ulrich and Hoshiko could face this huge challenge with their beautiful talents. At the same time this task would be a unique chance for the music coming into life. So the band continued developing these musical ideas after Edgar's sudden "change of his cosmic address" and you will have the chance now to listen to some wonderful tracks. In honour of Edgar!
