Tangerine Dream - Rubycon

Artist: Tangerine Dream
P: 1975/ 1995
Tangerine Dream's 1975 album picks up where 1974's Phaedra left off--with sequenced teases of palpitating synth under ambient washes of cosmic sound and traces of melody. If Phaedra was the marsh of dank electronic washes and eerie sounds in the night, Rubycon is that marsh just before dawn, awakening in a dusky light of bubbling metallic sequences and murky movements of lush synth. There's plenty of dreamy sections here, continuing on for several long delicious moments while creating a cosmic space that hovers between the unconscious and awakening. "Rubycon, Part II" builds an electronic wind tunnel of sound before breaking like a sunbeam through a cathedral and soaring into softly urgent skies of nuanced melody. The piece moves as an ocean wave, washing gently into a shore of tinkling cosmic rocks that reverberate and find hints of subtle, aching harmony before finally evaporating into the album's end. A brilliant ambient work.

Tangerine Dream - Rumpelstiltskin

Artist: Tangerine Dream
P: 1991 /
2007

In this popular Grimm's fairy tale, a king tells a young woman that she must spin a roomful of straw into gold by morning—or die. To complete this impossible task, she is forced to promise her firstborn child to a mysterious little man in return for his gold-spinning ability. Years later, he returns to claim what is his—only to find that he has underestimated the power of a mother's love. This is a haunting and heartfelt retelling of the classic German tale. Illustrated by Peter Sis. Ages 6 and up. Chicago International Film Festival Award; The Children's Music Web Awards special judges' citation.

Tangerine Dream - Seven Letters From Tibet

Artist: Tangerine Dream
P: 2000 / 2009
Remastered.
Instead of the usual pounding drum machines and digital orchestral samples, Tangerine Dream create more impressionistic, chamber spaces. Synthesizers swirl on "The Orange Breath," while digital choirs are transformed in ambient refractions. On "The Golden Heart," Chinese flutes accent a stereo-panned percolating beat that fades in and out of synthesizer sweeps. But the heavy string pads do get oppressive partway through, especially on the lugubrious "The Blue Pearl." Tangerine Dream are still languishing in digital laxness, relying on preprogrammed sounds and patterns.
The Seven Letters From Tibet is an excellent album for relaxation, although barely any usage of sequencers and drum machines have been made to the normal extent.

Tangerine Dream - Shy People

Artist: Tangerine Dream
P: 1987 / 1988

Original Motion Picture by Jill Clayburgh and Barbara Hershey
Music Composed, Performed and Engineered by Tangerine Dream (Froese/Franke/Haslinger) in 1987.
* Singer: Jacquie Virgil - Lyrics: Edgar Froese
** Singer: Diamond Ross - Lyrics: Haslinger, Franke
Shy People is a relatively long track. It starts off, very similar with the intro from Shine On You Crazy Diamond, from the Pink Floyd record Wish You Were Here.
Jacquie Virgil, the singer, begins with beautiful wordless vocal, but when she sings the lyrics, you get very disappointed, as she sneers the words out. Especially in the chorus, that has an interestingly quirky synth-melody, she sounds like a bad Tina Turner. If you can get beyond the singing, the track is acceptable. Joe's Place is a dark piece, and it sounds as if the Mellotron has had a revival. This flashback, makes this 70's inspired track pretty interesting. The Harbor, sung by Diamond Ross, is uptempo synthrock, with well performed synth and guitar interaction, that has the track to be credited for. The singer, undoubtedly paid for the occasion, really can't deliver the goods, as Haslinger and Franke simply has provided some poor lyrics. The rhythm of the song reminds of One of These Days - yet another reference to Pink Floyd. Nightfall is background music, and not very interesting on record. Together with Brother Or Stranger from 1986, Dancing On A White Moon is the closest Tangerine Dream comes to genuine pop music. The experience of writing pop songs is almost on an embryonic stage. In spite of the killer synth riff, the track lacks a great deal of enthusiasm, not only from Jacquie Virgil, but also Tangerine Dream. It can tempt you to think, that the film producers wanted a soundtrack with pop songs, and Tangerine Dream only did it to afford the newest synths on the market.

Tangerine Dream - Sorcerer

Artist: Tangerine Dream
P: 1977/ 2004

Without any doubt the best soundtrack released by Tangerine Dream.
With a relatively similar material used in the precedent record Stratosfear (concerning the keyboards and electronics: a lot of sequencers, mellotron and analog synthesizers), the members wrote a very dark and gloomy score.
The main title is terrifying and throws the listener in a creepy adventure. This track is a great opening to what is coming next.
Less experimental than the precedent title but as vibrant, the following tracks added one to an other create a long and epic journey throw the unknown.
Globally less imperishable than others T.D. works, this record remains a good musical moment to discover.
Composed and performed by Edgar Froese, Chris Franke & Peter Baumann.
Music from the original soundtrack of a William Friedkin Film.

Tangerine Dream - Sorcerer 2014 (2 CD)

Artist: Tangerine Dream
P: 1977/ 2014
In Copenhagen Tangerine Dream presented a real surprise release - a newly arranged soundtrack version of William Friedkin's film "SORCERER" from 1977 plus one hour of so far unreleased music which wasn't used in the film!! The band recorded that new version in a Viennese theatre shortly before the concert on the occasion of the Copenhagen Film Festival.

SORCERER 2014 is the first live 2CD recording from our new virtual eastgate music & arts music theatre in Vienna. With the quality of a studio sound you will hear the remake of the original analogue version of William Friedkin's 1977 movie SORCERER. On the second CD you will hear material not used for the movie but which has a strong context to the analogue spirit of the time. If you couldn't make it to Copenhagen for the public world premiere, you will have here the virtual theatre version of the same music. Enjoy this adventurous travel with three trucks through the Mexican jungle.
