Tangerine Dream

The most famous electronic music band ever. The inventor of the berlin school style.

Tangerine Dream - Le Parc

Artist: Tangerine Dream
P: 1985

Featuring shorter compositions and an increasingly lyrical lexicon of electronic sounds, Le Parc has more in common with the burgeoning new age movement than Tangerine Dream's earlier, eerier work. The songs are essentially musical postcards from great parks around the world, though the focus is on the mood generated by these places rather than a literal translation of geographic qualities. Thus, "Yellowstone Park" is rendered with an American Indian spirituality, "Zen Garden" is peaceful and mysterious, "Central Park" highly stylized and danceable. Tangerine Dream's music in recent years had shifted toward more accessible and melodic arrangements, so coming from the vantage point of a Phaedra or Stratosfear the music on Le Parc could be viewed as a considerable "dumping down" of their artistic origins. Part of Tangerine Dream's earlier appeal was their ability to evoke images in a language alien to the average listener; by adopting contemporary and relatively common sounds for these arrangements, some of their appeal is lost. The band is still capable of delivering enervating and engaging electronic music, but Le Parc operates on a more immediate level that values quick gratification over introspective study. That's not to suggest that listeners won't enjoy this record - the warmly remembered "Tiergarten" is well worth hearing, for example - but it operates on a superficial level that longtime fans may find slightly distasteful.

Tangerine Dream - Lily On the Beach (Japan Version)

Artist: Tangerine Dream
P: 1989/ 2009
Here the Japan Version.
This album is probably more intense overall than its predecessor, "Optical Race", but with a slightly lighter mood and more variety toward the end. Paul Haslinger and Edgar Froese continue to show off their wizardry here on electronic keyboards, guitars and drums, and again the emphasis is on progressive, driving compositions that are never boring because they don't just stick to one pattern or texture, but morph and grow with each phrase. This music is undeniably cool and a great motivator for workouts or physical tasks. Standout numbers on "Lily on the Beach" include "Desert Drive", "Crystal Curfew", "Valley of the Kings" and the opening track, "Too Hot for My Chinchilla". The closing track, "Long Island Sunset", is nice too, with varying tempos and intensities, and accoustic saxophone and flute provided by guest artist Hubert Waldner. If you like "Lily on the Beach", you're sure to like two other Tangerine Dream releases too--"Optical Race" and "Melrose".

Tangerine Dream - Live at Admiralspalast Berlin DVD

Artist: Tangerine Dream
P: 2012

There are quite a few TD Concerts were maybe a CD release is good enough to cover the musical atmosphere. Even if the concert was professionally filmed, the band wasn’t always sure to release both formats. But people kept asking for the images from the “Berlin Admiralspalast" concert, part of THE ELECTRIC MANDARINE TOUR 2012, in one of the legendary old theatres in Berlin. So, nearly one year after, you can watch this strange gig showing the band again in the city were everything began 45 years ago. This is not just a concert, it’s a historic document. A young dream at the old destroyed wall of desire.

Tangerine Dream - Live At Coventry Cathedral 1975

Artist: Tangerine Dream
P: 1975/ 2007
LTD: 1000
In December 1974 Tangerine Dream were invited to play in the grand setting of Rheims Cathedral, a move certainly seen at the time as ground breaking. Because of this, they were then invited to perform in the Cathedral of York, Liverpool and Coventry. The tour attracted unprecedented coverage in the media, especially at Coventry Cathedral, an iconic building rising like a Phoenix on the ruins of the old cathedral bombed to bits by the Germans in 1940 (Tangerine Dream is, after all, a German band) as a celebration of peace and reconciliation, as well as a lasting showcase for great contemporary art. The nave is dominated by a gigantic tapestry by Graham Sutherland, the main door dwarfed by a sculpture of St. Michael & the devil by Jacob Epstein, and the consecration in 1962 heard the first performance of Brittan's incomparable War Requiem.
To their lasting credit, Tangerine Dream contributed to this celebration. This film released now for the first time on dvd will be welcomed by the massive Tangerine Dream fan base, and also seen for what it is - a meeting of cultures and for a brief moment in time, a time where the past met both the present and the future.
