Steve Roach - Live Transmission From the Drone Zone at Soma FM

Artist: Steve Roach
P: 2013
Created in a single two-hour session two days after his epic May 2013 Ambicon concert, LIVE TRANSMISSION is Steve Roach doing what he does best: creating transcendent electronic music emerging from an elemental, instinctual mode. With months of preparation absorbed into his system, Steve's slow-flow moods and evocative soundscapes blend with ecstatic rhythmic sections born from hands-on analog sound creation. The result is a direct transference of creative energy from the artist through his instruments out to the listener.

For this release, Steve traveled with a portable version of his Timeroom Studio to the San Francisco-based headquarters of internet radio station SomaFM. For the past twelve years, SomaFM's "Drone Zone" channel has exposed a global audience to the best of electronic excursions with Steve as one of their regularly featured artists. Over the past few years, Soma founder Rusty Hodges and Steve have discussed creating a first-time-ever live electronic transmission directly from the SomaFM home base. As an in-the-studio immersion experience, this event unfolded with a large worldwide audience tuning in; Steve channeled that awareness into this expanded excursion. The set weaves all-new soundworlds with evolving themes from classic pieces into a seamless odyssey.

On
LIVE TRANSMISSION the musical journey is experienced in its pure form of creation: potent sounds unfolding in front of the listener like an act of nature. Surging heartbeats blend with deep atmospheric cloudbursts and serene moments of repose soon dissolve into shapeshifting landscapes. LIVE TRANSMISSION is the place where Steve’s music thrives, created at the leading edge of now.

Steve Roach - Long Thoughts

Artist: Steve Roach
P: 2017

LONG THOUGHTS is ambient music master Steve Roach's first long-form electronic release on Projekt since 2012. In an era where a constant deluge of overstimulation from all directions challenges and fractalizes our attention span into smaller and smaller packets, this 73-minute sanctuary provides solace; a soul-renewing immersion in the deeper end of the self-reflection pool. Roach first imagined the foundation of this release in early 2016, and over the last fifteen months he lived and slept listening to evolving versions of the album. This extended timeframe with LONG THOUGHTS supported a subtle, developing sense of the energy within the piece. A consummate evolution is important to Steve's fully-immersed micro-to-macro-soundsculpting approach. When experienced in looped infinite playback mode, the album creates a sense of constant, sustained nourishment to realign, reset, and soften the edges of modern life's quantized thought process. LONG THOUGHTS is part of a larger body of acclaimed long-form pieces from Roach's vast catalog. "To the Threshold Of Silence" (from WORLD'S EDGE), THE DREAM CIRCLE, SLOW HEAT, BLOODMOON RISING and the six hours of the Immersion series are all part of the sonic DNA contained in LONG THOUGHTS. Roach's pioneering approach to the soundscape-drone-ambient artform draws from a rich harmonic tapestry of chordal interweaves and original sound design. Moving beyond the static form of drone music, Roach's work in this area breathes and sighs with an organic wave that exists in its own dimension yet feels intimately familiar.  The music presents the listener with many ways to create their own Long Thought zone: gazing into the summer night sky, endless loop mode in the home at a low volume, direct engagement at a louder volume, used as a sleep environment, or for "holding of the space" as a kind of aural incense burning gently through the day and night.
As Roach enters his fourth decade as an artist of visionary soundworlds, his dedication to this artform presents a vital sanctuary of deep resonance and reflection.

Steve Roach - Magnificent Void

Artist: Steve Roach
P: 1996
The Magnificent Void forms a bridge between his recent explorations of tribal/techno rhythms and instrumentation to a space music that is original and engrossing. For example, digeridoo is played on the album, but is played in such a way that it does not sound like any instrument with which I am familiar. The music creates a landscape that lacks a geographic reference, a place which is mysterious and unknown yet strangely familiar.
The Magnificent Void is that place of emptiness which we approach with fascination and fear. The music transports us to a void where destruction and creation are simultaneous, where the cosmos collapse, where death will eventually take us all. Many of the tracks are spacious and wash over the listener like waves on a forever twilight shore.
Others, such as "Cloud of Unknowing" and "The Magnificent Void" convey the grandeur and chaos of cosmic creation.
This is a wonderful release, and should make new fans for this talented artist.

Steve Roach - Mercurius

Artist: Steve Roach
P: 2018

Mercurius is a resplendent sonic expression on the psychology and spirituality of impermanence and finding comfort in the liminal spaces of the in-between. Moving beyond the security of naming the infinite nuances intrinsic to being human is just one of the threads of intention woven into this music. Composed in four movements, Mercurius is a soulful resonation upon the ineffable.  The ebb and flow within Mercurius emerges from its own space and time moving beyond ambient, immersive or drone-based pieces. Masterfully delivered, Roach's singular evolving language of contemplative soundworlds arrives at a place of deeper refinement. Through the stately, profound pacing of chordal harmonic structures the diaphanous suspension and release of the four movements breathe with exquisite grace and depth.

"This release could only have been created at this point in my life, after all that has come before, bringing me to this point in my music's evolution and to this place of which Mercurius speaks..." — Steve

Steve Roach - Midnight Moon

Artist: Steve Roach
P: 2000
This is the first solo album by Steve Roach on the Projekt label. Another first is the fact that this album does not contain any synthesizer keyboard sounds. The entire album is realized through the use of the Stratocaster guitar, the Ebow and various processing effects. Like so much of Steves music, atmosphere plays the biggest part in the sound that becomes a Steve Roach album. MIDNIGHT MOON explores on the whole a rather dark terrain, but containing all the right elements to absorb the listener in a cocoon of ritual intensity, deep probing music to explore thesmall hours with.
Steves introduction to the guitar and the playing of it was through curiosity. The results being fresh but still containing that certain Roach sound which has been so powerful and popular over the years.

Steve Roach - Molecules of Motion

Artist: Steve Roach
P: 2018

MOLECULES OF MOTION is a sonic marvel: shimmering, pulsing, moving, emotional and engaging. A tapestry of sequencer-spun patterns floats upon an atmosphere of lush emotive textures alive with a vibrant, life-affirming glow. These four pieces can best be described as meditations upon elegant motion and electro-sensual space. On his first studio album since his recent Grammy nomination, Roach calls upon an expansive 35-year legacy at the forefront of electronic music creation. MOLECULES OF MOTION is a masterful album with roots in the Berlin School and a foot in the transcendent unknown of the future flowing into now. Roach's sonic universe merges into a realm that induces a weightless, three-dimensional sensation: a feeling of floating while simultaneously energized and informed from a serene calm center. His music itself has long transcended the tools with which it is made, while his choice of hardware-only, and mostly analog, instruments is fundamental to the signature sound of MOLECULES OF MOTION. It is proof positive of the artist bringing the high and deep together in this touchstone release.  As his creative approach evolves, the categories of classification dissolve. The rich palette of synth textures and intricate layers of lattice-work embraces the senses activating a heightened awareness while evoking an emotional resonance and reverie, a quality unique within all of Roach's soundworlds.

Steve Roach - Mystic chords & Sacred spaces part 1

Artist: Steve Roach
P: 2003

Floating, oceanesque chords, minimal harmonies and huge spaces - no beats, no rhythms. Listening to this album is rather like being immersed in swelling, curling ambient fluid. Each track a different drifting tonal infusion. There are wispy, glistening synthesised textures and vast meandering, droning fogs all rich in detail yet blurring, indistinct. The heavily layered sheets of sound form into eddies, that languorously shift, dissolve and are replaced.
The mood here is very dependent upon the listener. Each individual is freely able to associate this constantly shifting, ambiguous weaving of tones with their own mental imagery. I tend to visualize a thick tangible darkness shot through with viscous furling colour. At times the darkness amasses substance and can suggest despair, loss or isolation - or instead the listener is immersed in a sonic mist of indescribable beauty, as safe and as warm as the womb.
The cover art is spread across a beautiful digipak. Ambient color glows on the front in a vibrant ammonite spiral, almost as you might see it from within, this then disperses into vague forms and lush densities across the additional panels. The cds themselves are printed with exquisitely subtle liquid textures. The whole package has a sumptuous beauty that makes it immediately desirable even before you've heard the contents.
Tranquil, placid minimal harmonies that float and swirl, thickening and dispersing with a sense of no beginning and no end. The dreamlike torpidity can occasionally suggest ghostly, floating gloom, sometimes flushed, churning color, or even infinity wrapped up in sound. Here is music to influence your environment and state of mind or, if you prefer, to be influenced by your current dreams and disposition - a canvas upon which to daub your own mental imagery.
This music could well accompany lying and staring up into open space, meditating or simply drifting in the expanses of your own mind. A focus for a unique musical experience, incredibly deep and absorbing. A backdrop for reading or thinking, creating a mood or even study.
For the ambient explorer looking for pure sound uncluttered by rhythm, tempo or melody.
Here the first two CDs of the 4 CD Set.

Steve Roach - Nostalgia for the Future

Artist: Steve Roach
P: 2017

A deep ambient flow of six interconnected soundworld immersions evoking an echo in time, emanating in all directions. The presence of life’s nostalgic imprints casts this sense forward into a future state of longing and etheric reveries just out of reach but coming into form.
The mysterious - visceral power of sound works on many levels as a sensory activating experience. This is one of the many components that makes the music Steve Roach creates so nourishing, and alive. Through a deeper listening into the interweaves of emotion, place and time we can find solace, and an expanded sense of being. This is the realm where Nostalgia for the Future strives to dwell. Created between January and July 2017 this project was born from the solitude and focus from within The Timeroom studio in Baja Arizona. The result is this alluring time echo, a Nostalgia for the Future fully realized for the here and now. Steve Roach - Now + Traveler

Artist: Steve Roach
P: 1992
This CD brings together selections from Steve Roach's first two recordings, Now and Traveler. The fourteen selections featured in this collection were composed between 1979 and 1983. Although they hail from the days before samplers and MIDI advancements, many of these pieces sound as if they were created in the digital age. Roach's early releases, however, were created entirely through an inventive combination of analog synthesizers and imaginative recording techniques. More than two decades later, this music is filled with a freshness and emotional urgency, indicating just how far ahead of his time the California-born composer really was. First released in 1982, Now is an entrancing journey through darkness and light, from the ancient past to the eternal present, a powerful statement of birth, growth, transition, and rebirth into the living moment. With the release of Traveler, Roach continued his sound quest through a series of interlocking pieces that venture through evocative landscapes, both familiar and strange. Although Roach depicts a vast array of emotions and experiences in his music, the overall effect remains that of unresolved searching. Now and Traveler are the first two chapters in an ongoing story of musical and personal discovery that continues to unfold in his music today.

Steve Roach - On This Planet

Artist: Steve Roach
P: 1997
On This Planet reflects Steve’s other, much more visceral and rhythmic sound explorations.
This is a collection of music recorded in live performances and Steve describes it as “carved from the live experience” and that he wanted to capture the intensity released in that situation.
The music starts with a thunderstorm before various voices and other noises slowly emerge. A poem is spoken, a bullroarer sends out its call and a strong rhythm kicks in. There is a lot of sound sources such as ocarinas, grinding stones, drums and rain sticks on the CD mixing with the rhythms to create a very tribal soundscape.
The title track, last on the CD, has Steve playing with guest musicians Patrick O’Hearn, Roger King and Omar Faruk Tekbilek and is a great slab of musical improvisation creating something more than the sum of its parts.
This is a great CD as it shows the various threads of Steve’s musical journey and is a hugely enjoyable listen.

Steve Roach - Origins

Artist: Steve Roach
P: 1993
Steve's next solo after extensive touring in Europe and fruitful collaborations with Robert Rich and Suspended Memories. Primordial shamanic electronic music at its most powerful. Steve's didgeridoo playing is woven throughout. Jorge Reyes appears as guest, and the hybrid trance grooves find a new level of potency infused by surreal soundworlds dripping with primordial sweat. Incredible liner note story by Linda Kohanov helps to set the mood. Perfect music to shake the primordial cage door loose and run outside.  Origins may be the pinnacle of an ascent into the mystic and primordial places Roach began to visit on Dreamtime Return, the Suspended Memories project and World's Edge. The circulating didgeridoo patterns that fully imbibe this record are not only its' tonal center, but the electro-acoustic nature that is the heart of its sound, and Roach meticulously, passionately utilizes its earthy ferocity and multi-timbale frequencies to its fullest. "Clay, Wood, Bone, Dirt" uses the didj's hoary sonic pyrotechnics and a tumbling avalanche of hand-struck percussion to illustrate its tribalistic canvas. This is a recording that immerses the participant in daunting, expansive landscapes and deeply entrenched cultures permeated throughout by a darker, ominous resonance, as mortified by the unsettling melodrama and formidable rhythms of "The Face in the Fire". Never before has Roach's electronic surface felt so earthen and weathered; all of the assertive ambience and environmental dissonance he's pressurized up to now reaches critical mass in Origins' molten core.
Recorded and mixed at The Timeroom, Tuscon Arizona.
Composed, performed and produced by Steve Roach.
Guest artists: Suso Saiz, Jorge Reyes, Linda Kohanov and Daniel Nagle.

Steve Roach - Painting in the Dark

Artist: Steve Roach
P: 2016

In this new atmospheric opus, pioneering composer and artist of the transcendent Steve Roach explores the confluence of texture, tonality, sonic abstraction, continuity and space with a set of six interconnected paintings in motion. The spirituality of sound is central within these emotional landscapes with infinite horizons. In the way a visual artist mixes their colors and utilizes the natural light-infused ambience of the studio to support the piece as it evolves, Roach initiated these mystical sonic states under the influence of the late hours at night. Within the shroud of natural darkness and a few low level lights in the studio supporting the creative flow, these paintings in the dark were born. Steve often finds parallels in his creative process to that of a painter or sculptor, and aspired in this direction before discovering electronic music as his main form of artist expression. PAINTING IN THE DARK presents an aesthetic that is unique to Roach's work, embracing the mystery and wonder of sound as a constant evolving companion to the ongoing bloom of consciousness.

Steve Roach - Possible Planet

Artist: Steve Roach
P: 2005
POSSIBLE PLANET was created completely on a modular analog system which I assembled over a five-month period. As the sonic life form was evolving, the system that was creating it was evolving as well, in order for the changes to occur. This was also a great metaphor for the themes of the emerging cellular life forms I was dreaming into.
"In order to remove the reliable and familiar modes of working, I eliminated a few basics: no MIDI, keyboards of any kind, or computers for composition and editing. It was all about twisting knobs, feeling it in my fingertips and coaxing the current into the desired direction. POSSIBLE PLANET was recorded during three live sessions. Each session would start after several days of creating and learning the nuances of a 'living' patch I had created, from which the soundforms were drawn."
In 2005, Roach finished and released one of his most unusual albums to date, the eerie POSSIBLE PLANET. Here he switches instrumentation from his usual ultra-smooth synthesizers, percussion, and slow-played electric guitar to a set of neo-retro “analog” synthesizers. These were designed to retrieve that “old-fashioned” pop sound of the ‘70s and ‘80s but in the hands of Roach, they put forth long, weird trance worlds of drone-ambient.
He punctuates these long drone pieces with electronic versions of rattles, shells, and insect noises. These sound truly alien, as if someone had put a tiny microphone in an anthill to listen to them talking to each other. The third drone-piece is full of insectoid buzzing, which has a shimmer of recognizable chords to it, though it is no less spooky than the earlier non-tonal passages. You get the feeling that the “possible planet” that Roach is evoking is not Earth.

Steve Roach - Prayers to the Protector

Artist: Steve Roach
P: 2000
It was inevitable that synthesist Steve Roach would apply his soundscape designs to the deep, ancient, and often harrowing chants of Tibetan Buddhist monks. He's gone into the primal core with Aboriginal sounds and cultures on albums such as Dreamtime Return, and his Magnificent Void CD stepped into the abyss. On Prayers to the Protector, he works with the chants of Thupten Pema Lama of the Dip Tse Chok Ling Monastery. In Roach's studio, Thupten Pema Lama sang these devotional prayers and entreaties unaccompanied. Then Roach slipped them into his own soundworld, surrounding the monk with evanescent waves of synthesized ambiences. Being Steve Roach, this isn't the usual pretty New Age synth-glissandos, but darkly hued textures with metallic edges. On "Djewa takgya lingchee lhunbur dje" (a prayer for the world, according to the liner notes), he evokes the metal gongs and bowls of Tibetan chants as well as a freight train putting on the brakes in space. Prayers to the Protector doesn't dress up Buddhist chants, it just sends them into deeper space.

Steve Roach - Proof Positive

Artist: Steve Roach
P: 2006
"Shimmering", "life-affirming" and "moving only forward" best describes this new release drawn from the pulsing side of the lifeblood found in Steve's work. The next step after LIFE SEQUENCE, with a contained energy and spontaneously pulsing creative peaks, this one lights up the brain and excites the ears in a way that only pure analog sound can offer.
PROOF POSITIVE was created over the past year, from '05 to '06. These all-new pieces, sequential with textural undercurrents, have a kind floating sensation; the sum total is purely hypnotic with a contained and sustained energy that is consistent through the entire CD. This one lights up the brain and excites the ears in a way that only a hands-on spontaneous approach to the moment can offer. A touchstone release for Steve, this is a perfect set for long drives on the open road or for traveling the inner landscapes while cruising in your favorite listening chair.
Proof Positive indeed!

Steve Roach - Quiet Music

Artist: Steve Roach
P: 1983
QUIET MUSIC is a collection of pieces cerated in respect for silence between 1983 and 1986.
Besides its obvious relaxing qualities - much of this type of music is relaxing - there is also something ethereal and earthy about most of his work, especially that of late where he is experimenting with Native American/southwestern rhythms. Quiet Music is really no exception.
The blurb on the back cover reads "Like a shimmering mirage on the desert, this subtle music reflects your own images, evoking shades of mood and meaning." I really couldn't put it better myself. There are tracks here are so subtle that on the one hand they almost stand still - like one moment is captured, and yet convey a sense of movement. Of, well, drifting sands and floating clouds. It is at once relaxing and intriguing, wondering where the next note leads - the next dune leads, perhaps. I would imagine that for anyone who spends a great deal of their time in the city, this music may not mean much to them. Except for the wee hours of the morning, and maybe not even then, there isn't much complete silence to explore. For those who spend time in the "great wide open," this will resonate with them.
This album evokes the sound, mood, and feel of silence. One person alone with elements, at one with the universe, so to speak. And while that sounds like "New Age mumbo-jumbo," it really isn't intended to be. We should, however, spend more time reflecting upon ourselves, discovering who we are, what makes us the unique individual we are. When you do that, you can appreciate more the things around you.
However, if you were in total silence, you wouldn't be able to listen to this album, now would you?

Steve Roach - Quiet Music The Original 3-Hour Collection

Artist: Steve Roach
P: 1983 / 2011
For the first time ever, the meditative, ambient minimalism of the QUIET MUSIC series is available in its entirety in a 3-CD digi-pak release. Originally released in the mid-'80s on cassette and later in a truncated 2-CD edition, QUIET MUSIC: THE ORIGINAL 3-HOUR COLLECTION presents this landmark album as Roach envisioned it.
The Original 3-Hour Collection" 3CD packaged in very decently and attractively looking 6-panel digipak. As indicated by its title, Steve presents here absolutely peaceful and minimal aerial washes, floating ambience at its most relaxing and meditative level. Several long form pieces are featured on this treasured set, for example both parts of "The Green Place" that complete disc one, each one clocking over 30-minute mark. This is most likely the most naturally sounding ambience in these series with strong organic feel enriched by captivating and relaxing field recordings that beautifully color Steve's serene soundscapes and Will Morris' flute (with the synthesizer help of Mike Christopher at the beginning of Part One). The music splendidly portrays the first part of the cover image. Disc two, consisting of five compositions, three of them are shorter, while the last two pieces, "A Few More Moments" and "Air And Light", are longer (13 and 32 minutes) , is full of minimal and simple palettes, yet slowly and gently evolving, hauntingly beautiful and evoking vast landscape panoramas, where all these sonic textures capture pure magic of brightness, peace, serenity and silence. This truly fascinating journey, transporting each listener to another time and space, proceedes also on disc three. Two longer floaters include "Dreaming And Sleep" and "Sleep And Dreaming"(again featuring Will Morris on flute), while "Quiet Canon" clocks to 8 minutes, but all these three compositions will navigate you to beautifully magical and subconscious night sky trip.
QUIET MUSIC is a collection of pieces created between 1983 and 1986 in respect for silence. The gentle electronics of Roach's synthesizers mix with flute, electric piano and sounds of nature flowing like breath, enveloping the listener in a sustained, delicate, translucent atmosphere.

Steve Roach - Rasa Dance

Artist: Steve Roach
P: 2013
This collection of previously-released pieces was refined over several years of movement magic between horses and humans. Created for the Eponaquest horse-faciliated workshop Rasa Dance by equine innovator and best-selling author Linda Kohanov, the music sets the tone for interactive sessions where horses and humans literally move and dance together, thus providing a supportive atmosphere for the experience of connection. This dynamic music set covers a powerful range of emotions and inspiration which perfectly mirrors the Rasa Dance workshop theme.
The collection brings together an inspired set of thematic, rhythmic, and melodic pieces from Steve Roach's vast body of work.
The Evolution of Rasa Dance
In 1993, at the height of my career as a music critic, I sold my CD collection to buy Tabula Rasa, a beautiful black Arabian mare. Six months later, I was riding her in the desert when a huge Rottweiler chased us through a deep sandy wash, injuring Rasa’s right back leg, ending our promising riding career, yet ironically leading us on a much more fruitful path.
The Chinese sage Lao-tzu observed that “it is upon disaster that good fortune rests,” a lesson that Rasa and her other herd members challenged me to embrace over and over again. While the sheer joy of working with horses always outweighed the hardships, the most profound transformations happened when things didn’t go my way---when my most reliable tools, ideas, and coping strategies failed, and I had to respond to the world rather than try to control it. Through Rasa, I learned to dance with the unexpected while literally learning how to dance with her on the ground. This consolation for my inability to ride her turned into a relationship-enhancing practice that I used with other horses, and eventually taught to people through our “Rasa Dance” workshops.
For these clinics, my husband Steve and I perused his extensive list of original compositions, selecting various moods and tempos. This CD collection was refined through years of movement magic between horses and humans. “Eye of Noche” and “Where Rasa Lives” were later created in memory of two horses who became great dancers, then great dance teachers of people, including those who had never worked with horses before. I was subsequently surprised to find the phrase “Rasa Dance” associated with the ancient god Krishna, who danced with his followers by moonlight. In India, a sacred performance is still called a Rasa Dance, signifying a state of grace in which Spirit engages with its many manifestations, expressing different aspects of infinity through the music of connection. But it was a living, breathing horse named Rasa who taught me that when two beings move in synchrony, a greater consciousness arises. Most importantly, I learned that if we can dance with joy, ecstasy, power, frustration, miscommunication, tragedy and anything else that comes our way, an underlying sense of deep peace emerges, allowing us to fully engage with life.

Steve Roach - Return to the Dreamtime

Artist: Steve Roach
P:
2018
This return presents expanded and evolved pieces from DREAMTIME RETURN, created live at the Galactic Center in Tucson Arizona on February 10, 2018. The premiere concert was broadcast live worldwide on the SomaFM Internet radio station. The recording was fine-tuned at The Timeroom by Steve and mastered by Howard Givens, presenting a studio-quality sonic experience empowered by the live moment.

Return to the Dreamtime... 30 years deeper...

Day and night for several months leading up to the concert, I traveled deep into the essence of where this music lives in my being. The process of immersing into the 30th-anniversary remastering of DREAMTIME RETURN inspired the desire to expand upon and present this music live for the first time since the early 90's.  The pragmatic work began with excavating the archived sounds, samples, and location recordings I created for this project in 1987 and '88. The sources were still cataloged and stored in my studio, having traveled with me though many moves and different Timeroom locations over the years. All of the essential sounds and samples were still in working order on 512KB floppy disks and 80's-era hard drives for the Emu samplers. The original analog synth patches have also lived continuously in my Oberheim Xpander. The technical side was just one part of the process in the reconnection to this pivotal time. The live-in-a-studio-like environment of Solar Culture's Galactic Center was essential in this recording; the energy of the packed in-house audience combined with the worldwide listeners tuning into SomaFM's live broadcast supercharged the atmosphere of the space and momentum into this moment. As these portals to the Dreamtime experience were opened, memories and tactile sensations of my time in Australia along with the epiphanies from then into now flooded my creative consciousness, placing me directly into this realm of a return within the Return.
