This is a truly great, moody, mixed up album. I bought it because I am a great fan of Steve Roach, who has the last tracks. All the other artists are great, each track a different aural interpretation of a different Dali painting. It's like looking at Dali through headphones. Try getting a book with images by Dali, and looking at the pictures while listening to the music composed for each one. Moody, creepy, raucaus, dreamy, eclectic...Dali.

An excellent multi-artist collection compiled by Alio Die from 1993, this organic soundscape project includes many of the top artists in this dark-ambient genre.

This is a collaboration with Steve Roach and Jeff Pearce.
The most amazing thing about this beautiful work of art is that minimal tribal components are woven into a constantly evolving cascade of synth-orchestral textures and natural sounds (no, not the flute over waterfall routine!) to draw a listener into a meditative yet fully aware state of relaxation and focused concentration. Whereas much of Dirk's (Vidna's) vast volume of work is based on loops and drones, Crossing the Trail singularly succeeds in elevating the slow/barely perceivably structured pieces that flow with emotion and remain in memory despite a dearth of melody. This CD is a landmark of depth, darkness and light that is perfect for studying, relaxing or dissecting. I have many of Vidna Obmana's CDs and, though I enjoy them all, this work remains my favorite, an expansive yet intimate, cold yet enveloping, majestic yet delicate soundscape that raises the bar for what is possible from this sort of ambient music. I needn't comment on the pieces separately because the entire CD is one seamless whole, incapable of being wrenched apart. Every thing I listen to in this genre gets rated according to the perfection of Crossing the Trail.

This double CD contains three recordings from the mid 1990s, Echoing Delight, Parallel Flaming, and The Spiritual Bonding. They find Serries in a transition period between abstract space music and techno-tribal trance works. A disciple of Steve Roach, Obmana's career generally tracks the evolution of the American synthesist. Adding to the parallels, Roach also appears on the collection, along with Robert Rich and Alio Die. Vidna Obmana is Serbo-Croatian for "optical illusion"; in his music, Serries conjures the audio equivalent of all manner of sensory distortions/legerdemain. Synthesizers create infinite glissandos wrapped around rhythms that range from tribal rituals to ominous zombie dances. Serries has a slightly more melodic sensibility than Roach, albeit melodies that are stretched out over time. Sometimes serene, often disturbing and threatening, the title Subterranean Collective, might be aptly extended to Subterranean Collective Consciousness as Obmana explores a psychological zone beneath the surface.
